To run 5K you just have to run. There´s no need to bulk up muscle-mass or wear a cool outfit or talk 1000 calories away with a nice smile on your face. I find it weird - taking training-tipps for runners from someone who is carrying 20pounds of useless muscle-mass with himself.
@vulva45 actually there have been 12 year olds to run 15:30 (I'm guessing your comment was sarcastic). A 17 year old ran 12:53 a few weeks ago. World record=12:37
@tombooze25 well having all that core strength can make him a lot faster. its not really how much you weigh. its how much pain you can take. one of the runners on my team got a state championship for sc. and he was 5" 7' and about 160. his time was 16:30 i think. that is fucking fast. so suck my pecker bitch.
This should be called A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO THE 5k! you have to run more than 3 miles on your long runs if you expect to come anything but last place...
4 & 1/2 weeks until my first 5k! Wooooooo! Been running for 3 weeks so far. I'm gonna go out so fast. I hope i get in the 21 to 20 range. Thumbs up for puking!
when i first started i think i was at like 45minutes haha i wasnt out of shape doing sprints or anything but i just never did longer distances. i realized i didnt know how to pace myself and overdid it to quick and then burnt out early. once you can run about 10minutes at a fast pace you realize that just keeping that pace and adding 1-2minutes to it every week or so you build up the endurance for the race real quick without struggling.
i am at about 24minutes right now but i want to start increasing the distance now while keeping up that pace for as many extra miles as i can build up to
Okay, maybe a lot of YOUR friends do, because all your friends are fucking pansies just like you. I can't believe you're trying to justify using smiley faces. Stop being such a wimp.
@Sephirot4678 a freshman that can do a 15 min. 5k? doubt it.. thats very close to the world record...and the best runner in my state who is a senoir now i think runs his in over 15min.
all you need to do to get better times is to put in a lot of miles. I personally put in 40 to 50 miles a week as a freshman in high school. and you also need to have speed workout days were you do like 400s and things like that to improve on your speed.

but running races especially 5k's are awesome because you can set your own goals and you can win when you achieve them. just because you didn't come in 1st 2nd or 3rd doesnt mean you didn't win
thanks. right now my times are really high probably because im focusing on building muscle and short term endurance. once summer comes ill probably be training for longer distances again
@woo2fly21 At the time I was already in semi-shape because I was playing football, but I would say about a month of training everyday or 5-6 days out of the week. What I did was come home from school and rest, then about an hour before it got dark I would just run about half a mile then gradually worked my way up to 3,4,5 miles. I will send you a message because I cant finish
omg i dont know what to do ive been running a mile everyday and i still get tired just running 1 mile can someone help me? i want to run long distances
Of course I did, just a few years ago in middle school I couldnt even run a mile, and then I started lifting and getting into better shape. Im actually a sprinter and decided to do cross country this year.
lmao im a junior in highschool lmao im supposed to be a sophmore (skipped kindergarden) but that is a different story lol... but what weight lifting strategy do u have for your legs because my biceps are already big.
lol I actually just do whatever but if you are looking for strength then id say leg press, squats, leg curls, and leg extensions would probably help alot
I just moved to the us from Kenya 2 years ago ( I know What your thinking....)...........But Freshman Year I Ran 20's Soph year 18's , and during the summer( when we got our new coach).....we did 5 miles @ 95% of race pace and I Improved from 31 min to 26 min!.....Over the summer !.......Now I Run 15:10 ( My PR ).................Do this excersise along with at least 11 miles on your long run.......And Maybe You'll Run Like A Kenyan Today!

Before you know it you forget family and friends so that you can get high running five miles, ten miles, fifteen miles and then twenty miles. After that you abandon your family and friends in search of marathons all over the country. Your wife divorces you and your kids disown you. The only subject you talk about is running.
Runners World magazine this month has a good how to for beginners - start out walking 10 minutes, run for 10, then walk for ten, slowly increase the amount of time you run and decrease amount you walk. sooner than later, you'll feel the difference.
Thanks for the tips! I've always been a fan of running longer distances. It clears my mind a bit, and i get to meet new people. Did a couple of 5k runs, and one 10k.
I was dead for the next week or so after the 10k one. Going to prepare better for the next one in August, and this will help greatly.
Anyone else think that their eye contact feels really awkward?

MY PROGRAM/PLAN>
-Run every second day,and increase your distance little by little every week(for begginers after 2 weeks).
-Rest(stopping) during the training for long race is not recommended. Its better to slow down, but keep your body activated.
-There is no instant motivation. There is a purpose, your goal. And when you have that, you will have true motivation and path in front of you.
-Never give up.

I've always wanted to start running. This has helped. I'm scared of doing like he said and on the first day having to get a shin splint. lol. :]

Runners World magazine this month has a good how to for beginners - start out walking 10 minutes, run for 10, then walk for ten, slowly increase the amount of time you run and decrease amount you walk. sooner than later, you'll feel the difference.

that's a good suggestion.
