Checkout Google Goggles on an android phone for the Google take on the same kind of thing.

The next five years or so should see this tech really explode.

Wait what? At first it looked like some impossible (but useful if it works) service but then it was just a kid's toy.

The demonstration was a kids toy, the application will allow you to identify services by a picture on you camera, phone, etc. So you can get information without entering a building, or instructions for use of a device by taking a picture. Like facial recognition, but instead, object recognition and instruction based on the object. Pretty smart.
