HELLO! Great video, great stuff, as usual. I am building my own template, I have 4 VSL ensemble. Everything is smooth, but the fourth Vienna ensemble freezes while loading! I'm on iMac i7 3.4 ghz 16GB ram. Any idea why?!
I know this may seem like a dumb question to a lot of people, but I'm kinda ignorant on the subject. What hardware are you using that I see on the table in front of you (behind the keyboard). I noticed in some of your other videos that you used it for mod wheel and volume control. Is it a mixer of some sort?
i did not understand the part about where you can record multiple tracks in one take. you only have one keyboard so why does it matter that you have all the instruments record-enabled in the same take?
Wow, pretty nice tutorial! Got some impressions here. :)
But there's a little question: Do you use different values of the dry/wet-mix in the different instances of Altiverb of the main auxes? Or are they all set to 100% wet?
Why are you loading the libraries in Bidule? There are definite pros and cons to this. Cons: If you change ANYTHING, EVERY old composition will sound different in those areas. Pros: You can keep every project up to date as IMPROVEMENTS to mapping will propagate to everything; past and future. You can also load different songs extremely quickly since the songs themselves are just MIDI projects and don't have to re-load virtual instruments. Perhaps you see the pros as more important than the cons?
@pulseforce (1 of 2) Personally, I keep it all in one huge Logic Pro project "template" where I've got all the sample libraries loaded up, with MIDI channels assigned for about a hundred different sample patches. The outputs of the libraries are multi-channel, and are routed to separate mixer tracks. I do the same grouping bussing as you (hi strings, low strings, etc) as well as a global Altiverb that I send each instrument to with a send amount knob.
@pulseforce (2 of 2) Updates to this template means NEW projects can take advantage of them, while old projects are not harmed and will always sound the same. I don't need the improvements to propagate to already-done projects, in fact I don't want that to happen. I also don't mind the loading times of swapping between projects.
@pulseforce Alright, to anyone reading this, I found an answer to this on another video of his. The reason for the external Bidule template is to quickly be able to swap songs without having to reload libraries. It's an alright reason, but anyone doing this needs to remember that Bidule has no PDC (Plugin Delay Compensation), so virtual instruments and effects hosted in Bidule will not be sample accurate WHATSOEVER. Then there's also that problem of template changes affecting all past projects.
Hi i've searched all your videos to find the answer to this but I couldn't so I will post here. I really like the way you use two sliders to control volume and modulation on the U-Control(?) You seem to be able to control (and record) the volume and modulation changes of EVERY track (or group of tracks) you select in DP. How are you doing this? Please please explain how you do this? I have been trying to work it out all day!
Hey Mike - Are you using Logic or DP these days? I'm still with Logic 8, but DP 7.2 looks especially enticing. Just curious, since you've got experience with both.
Your system is so efficient! I wonder if someone knows a way to do this in CuBase and Pro Tools? I used DP a lot in school tho, but turned over to Steinberg CuBase and Pro Tools when I discovered that I didn't have to freeze the midi tracks to audio before bounce. Saves a lot of time. But then again it is nice to freeze if you want to have more freedom of the files. You should have more videos put out showing how to keep things in order and efficient! This is a very valuable video.
I'm already composing for a French video game for free. However, I really want to score another video game or film! I use Sonar and virtual instruments.
Thanks again for this. Are you experiencing any midi delay? I've found using just the Bidules causes delay but if you use the Bidule Rewire you get sample accurate sync. You can set the number of Bidule rewire midi ports in preferences but you must be in stand alone mode. In other words you can't change the settings until you are out of Rewire mode.
mike, thanks for that great video. i have two questions, what sampler are you using in plague to load the usual akai stuffs.
why should anyone choose plague when u can load most them in exs24 or any sampler in a vst instrument track and instantly EQ or add reverb send etc.. while to eq an vst instrument in plaque we have to go through cabling process etc..
It's better having the samples in a program that is outside your sequencer for memory reasons. Plus it's nice to have the template constantly loaded when you open up new sequences. No need to wait for stuff to load every time.
Hi there dinerdog. I'm glad you like Drums of War!
I have 110 midi instruments loaded in Bidule, and about 104 loaded in a Giga for a total of 214. This is a good foundation, then anything else I need to load I just load directly into DP. I have 2 other PC's that I can use as well, but I prefer not to ;)
Hey man... greats vids you've been posting... thanks for taking the time to make them... checked out some of your music too on your site too... fantastic work...
MIKE HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU ABLE TO HAVE ALL THOSE VST INSTRUMENTS OPEN WITH ALTIVERB? Please tell me, what is your Mac Spec? Is Digital Performer 64bit yet? Im on PC
I really don't know. I'm sure there is. I've seen side-by-side comparisons and they end up costing about the same. Except one has the superior operating system ;)
@ixionelectrifier It's about how many instance you use in the same time. Usually in film scoring, music have a bigger macrodynamic , so not so many instance in the same time.
thanks for sharing this detailed look into your template. it is really informative and a fantastic 'how to maximize' the bidule software. it has provided a wealth of organizational ideas. a real gift. thx.
It seems that Bidule1, Bidule2, etc. are only available on Mac OSX. If you are using Windows you need a virtual MIDI driver to route the channel from your sequencer to bidule or use rewire.
thanks for this vid... I never heard of Bidule, seems to work very well for you.... would love it you could show how you set something like this up in a little more detail specific to Bidule.

Cool video. I got a question for ya. When mixing different libraries, would it be better to use close mics rather than stage mics ? Thanks

I'm trying to get where you're at with my setup. But first, the Rewire situation. How do I set that up in DP?

Are you using Bidule with Rewire? If so how did you get around the 1-core thing. What was your setup to utilize all cores?
I have bidule installed and routed to Logic but am looking for the best way to use multi-core processing which Rewire doesn't seem to do.
Once I find the answer, then I will tweak the DFD settings and hopefully be on my way to a nice big orch template.
Great Vid.

This is funny, your tracks are not organized on the actual scoring sheet.
When I sent a MIDI file to a befriended film composer who works with orchestra, he was like: geez, your tracks are allover!
Not organized and all. Hahah. Glad to see someone doing the same.

I have Bidule 1,2,3,4 only. Intel Mac OS 10.5.6.
And I have no Bidule Rewire.
How did you create the modules that I'm missing.
Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting.
How do you get so many rewire channels on Bidule? I only get 16 rewire channels when I open Bidule.
Also I don't find the MIDI ports called "bidule 1", "Bidule 2", etc.
I'm on PC btw. Maybe there are some differences between the Mac and PC version...
Alex70K 3 years ago
Update: I have found the settings for the Rewire channels. But still I don't see how to enable the "Bidule (n)" MIDI Ports.
Thanks.
Alex70K 3 years ago
Try creating a MIDI Input in Bidule (Midi Devices/Input/), and see if your sequencer recognizes it. What is your sequencer btw?
Plasmasplasm 2 years ago
same for me, i can't see any "Bidule 1, Bidule 2 ..etc" in midi devices to create a midi port. Have you found the solution?
(i use Nuendo 3 on PC)
