There are also shelters in most large citties that give free meals to the homeless. These people do not have a monopoly on the wasted food in New York, it's free game. Obviously, there is food that no one else has claimed, which would otherwise be destroyed. They may seem weird to you, but are actually quite intelligent. They probably do more for their commmunity than you.

As a vegan/freegan I wouldnt eat meat from the dumpster, just cause my body wouldnt be able to handle it physically and for health reasons, but i will still take it and give it to someone who does... but the meat is in the dumpster is fine to eat, there really shouldnt be an ethical barrier to avoid it because the animal was already killed, letting it rot would let the aniaml die in vain, if your not gonna eat it give it someone who will.

the grocery store i work at would rather throw away hundreds of dollars worth of food everyday versus donating it and getting a tax write off. I do something like this too. I live in a small Nebraska town where we have to haul our own grass to a community compost pile. Every single time we have gone there, there have been piles of garden produce that people are too lazy to deal with. Today alone I managed to get a large bucket of eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Not ONE thing was wrong with most of it, it's just a matter of sorting, chopping, and keeping what is useable.

you are partially right, there main point is to boycott stores and make a statement, however this can defiantly produce what social scientists call a radical flank effect. that's when certain people in a social movement act radically in order to call attention to a movement which ultimately legitimizes the actions of moderates within the same movement. so if everyone started eating out of the garbage or finding ways to avoid markets the system would collapse or they have to purchase less food.

Farms are still going to produce the same amount of food. The goventment actually pays farmers to not sell crops every year to keep the market from being flooded. So unless these people are willing to consume more food than they normally would, they are not actually causing less food to go to waste. All they are really doing is boycotting the food producers.

Its Crazy! In my hood there is perfectly edible food in the dumpsters. Even enough for homeless (if they would bother to collect.
