  • @alawaiman i bet u they ate it

  • pleaze dont point your gun at your dive budy

  • looks like a big moana

  • looks like one cross breed uhu kumu.. as one kumu that

  • Lips dont look big enough to be a munu. Otherwise, it looks exactly like a munu out of the water. Maybe it's the wat th mouth is .... you can'y really see the lips that well.

  • haha i shot one of these in side a hole thinking it was a kumu or a joe, i was trippin'

  • yep its a munu

  • wow my friend jus shot one cross bread kumu look jus like dat one outside makaha beach. seems like half joe and kumu

  • not a malu, probably not a kumu, not necessarily an introduced/non-indigenous species either. there are (used to be) moana species that are hard to find these days, like the olive green one with ruby-red eyes shaped like one kumu that my friend caught whipping ika strip at nu'u bay. take a look at margaret titcomb's book "Native Use of Fish in Hawaii" under the category "moano" and you'll see that she describes more varieties than just munu, malu, kumu, moana kali.

  • This is not a Pfluger's goatfish! It is a "malu" or sidespot goatfish. Usually they don't get very large, so I can see why no one has properly identified they fish from the footage. The Latin name is Parupeneus pleurostigma. GUARANTEE!

  • Sorry Bro, Not a malu,,,That is for sure,,,Malu have one white and one black dot on each side and are kinda light greyish/offwhite colore. This fish was red and had 3 white dots on each side, and body shape was more like a kumu. Malu body shape is more like Veke.

  • Yes I agree, after watching the video a few more times, I see that it is not a malu. Also, it is definitely not a Pfluger. Pfluger's have a deep V shaped tail like a yellow weke. Your fish has a tail more like a kumu. Perhaps it is a non-indigenous goatfish. One of my friends once shot a bat-fish outside ala moana beach park. They aren't supposed to be in Hawaii, but it was. Maybe your goatfish originated elsewhere and was carried in a larval stage to Hawaii.

  • its a munu

  • yes, Not a Malu. Malus have a spike on the gillplate.

  • @alawaiman one kumu an one weke went breed and made one half kumu an half weke baby nuts yea

  • @alawaiman im sure you already found out the species. but it looks like a moelua but moelua are a lighter red this kinda looks like a munu as well but a munus head has like a dip in it. so im not really sure haha

  • @blankaball dats one Moana......same family as Moana Kali.....this fish put em' on the fire wrapped in foil with some black bean sauce frickin winna...or you can stuff em' like on uhu

  • ok alawai man.....i am from maui...this is a very uncommon type of goatfish...you may be correct on the hawaiian name..but i know the american name is PFLEUGER's Goatfish....usually kinda more pinkish when they are smaller....i have only seen a couple of that size....they are usually loners too...sometimes they can look like red weke too.....tell me what you think

  • where is this on the north shore

  • Could be half kumu half munu.

  • could also be a munu.. i forgot about those..

  • i believe munus are a bit darker than the goat shown.

  • change color when shot..just like 2 bar goats..they are white and grey in water..but when shot they are red and a lighter red.

  • It could be a moelu but if you really want to find out send a pic to hawaii fishing news. They have solved mystery fish before.P.S sick vids bah!!!

  • moana moano same thing...many bar goat...jo.. what ev's fry 'em up bake um...grind em...is that a triple banded riffe? kinda over kill no reef fish dude...but sick vid none the less

  • its a moana kali

  • dude do u even dive

    a moana kali cmon..moana kali's arent red u dumbass

  • they can be in a part of a rare mating phase..but this is definitely a moano...or many bar goatfish...sometimes called a "joe" or a "joey louis"...=)

  • good job with the videos, pretty cherry, looks and acted like a joe but seems to have some features of a kumu and a moana, will probably taste like it with some blackbean rub and smokin hot peanut oil poured on it. keep it up.

  • Hey nice video, I enjoyed that! Glad you adjusted the camera as it freaked me out also when I saw the gun pointing at your mates head LOL! Good fun thanks for sharing!

  • pointing a loaded speargun even with safety on is not safe... good video though. safe spearin brother

  • Look at other vids, this is first vid. I adjusted camera to be safe buddy.

  • looks like a type of goat for sure

  • looks like moana/munu

  • and ya... that was a weird goat at the end

  • i live on maui we get choke diff kine goatfish swimming round i believe dat its a cross between different types of goat fish it could be part kumu part moana but im not sure

  • Update on the situation: I have top biologists working on it and as far as physical features are concerned, they keyed the fish and they think it's a Moana/Munu. They will do a DNA test and I will have results soon.

  • Found out what the fish is. It's called a Moe Ula. Uncommon goatfish from Maui and Big Island.

  • NVM i was wrong

  • brah thats a kumu.

  • Wrong

  • yeah, das wat my wife said chadmiha. no point the gun at me. mo betta get my own camera

  • Does it taste like Kumu?

  • I still have it in case biologists want it.

  • Cool vid, but you shouldn't point your gun at your buddy like that.

  • It wasn't at him, however i will rig my camera so that it can turn. That way 100% safe.

  • Yeah, that be a good idea, you never know what a shaft will do during a misfire. Dive safe!

  • think it's booga or latcha §§?

  • heh?

  • mahalo alawaiman for not getting too mad at me for wanting to leave after finding no clean water, a storm on the horizon and a couple of man-o-war stings. thanx for braining the kumu i was out of breath

  • yup looks like a mix breed bra i nevr saw those before you should take it to the museum ha but you ever dove down kailua waimanalo side?

  • I dive Lanikai's sometimes, or Makapu. Not too much Waimanalo, don't know the grounds.

  • mean vids. wow that is wierd, i say its a kumu, or maybe munu, lol mixed breed?!

  • I was almost a marine biologist and i'm sure this is neither, unless a cross-breed like you said. There is another fish that my father once told me about that is a really rare goat, but i forgot the name, i'll ask him and get back to you.
