  • Two words why I ended up here: Bioshock Infinite :))

  • I love the Jeff Beck version better. He has a gospel choir with him. Listen to it alot.

It is on a tribute to John Lee Hooker album. Check it out.

  • RIP, Granny

  • This is a beatuiful song! we had a family friend sing it at my Grandmother's funeral this past year. It was her favorite song to sing in church. R.I.P Gammy! love you, miss you! :')

I wish listen the long version with elizabeth voice !!

  • Thank you Bioshock infinite for introducing me to this beautiful song. :)

  • Susan Cromwell Baker, for you in memory of your Mom!

  • As many said, I came here because of Elizabeth. Although, this version is not sad like the other one. The opposite I'd say. Well, I prefer the sad version...

  • Marry me Mairead.

  • Lol bioshock army haz arrived

  • Elizabeth's beautiful short version made me search this out :)

  • BIOSHOCK INFINITE

  • R u kidding??

  • Now there's a room I would have liked to have been in. May current favorite. Thanks for posting

  • This song was sung at my Aunt's funeral with a recording from Randy Travis. Here is a unique blend of women from the US, Canada, and Ireland. Thank you TomScotland for uploading it. I like your videos.

  • I enjoy Mrs. DeMents voice. It has a beautiful twang.

  • Sometimes the sound of a distant piper can stir ones heart, or the peel of a distant bell ring clear and true and for a moment we take notice, yet here in song with these clear voices, they draw me back to a time when beauty was the very simplicity itself.

  • @Schnitzelschitzen

    Beautiful man, well said.

  • Today it has been one year since I lost my wife after a long illness. This song among others, along with strong support of family and friends, helps me get along. Miss you very much Babe and I know we will be together again!

  • Noone sings with emotion like Iris. I never tire of such classics.

  • LOL Iris Dement has some interesting facial expressions when she sings. She has the twitches and facial tics of a blind person. Sorry, I notice the face when the voice is less than compelling. Isn't there ANYTHING new in music? I mean...how many times have we heard THIS song? With the same 4 part harmony? I mean...it's like watching the same movie OVER and OVER again!

  • @thegrinchl7 It's not meant to be NEW, it's a coming together of the heritages and sharing of music. How radical would you like it to be?

  • @thegrinchl7 You are a moron.

  • @109gnm - Do YOU like DeMent's voice? Ugh! That shrill nasal thing she does is 2nd only to her eyes rolling white into her forehead! Ewww!

  • @thegrinchl7 Apparently a few of us do; hence, we are watching the video. Why you are here, however, having so much disdain for her, remains a mystery.

Here's a thought: You can derive a lot more pleasure from watching/listening to thing you enjoy, than intentionally watching things you don't and returning to it enough times to make numerous comments. Why not watch something you'd actually enjoy? Try it, it actually works!

  • @cobf22 - Here's the reason why: Last year I saw

one of the best films ever made, the Coen brothers'

"True Grit". It was perfect in every sense EXCEPT

at the slow and quiet ending they included a horrific

rendition of "Leaning On The Wings of something-or-

other". Iris DeMent's discordant and nasal HONK

sent shock waves through me, and apparently other

members of the audience. At first I thought, perhaps,

it was just another Coen brother gag. What ON EARTH

    must they have been thinking?

  • @thegrinchl7 I can perfectly understand that. But as much as I respect the fact that you don't like her, I still don't see how that explains you watching videos totally unrelated to the Song "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" or the movie True Grit. Typically, when I don't like something, I try to avoid it... maybe that's just me o.O

  • @cobf22 - Well...we're all different. I may not like a

scab on my arm but I VISIT IT OFTEN...scratching

and wondering if it will ever go away. As you know,

YouTube attaches related videos (on the right side)

of whatever you're watching. If you watch "True Grit",

you'll get all manner of videos associated with this film.

Iris Dement, the honking hillbilly was sitting right there.

I took a look and she's every bit as horrible as I thought.

Do YOU like this woman's shrill "voice"? Ugh!

  • @thegrinchl7 i have no idea what the Coens were thinking, but i'll tell you what i'm thinking, when i read your post... thank god, i don't have to go through life with your lack of taste in music

i can tell you what i'm thinking and it's gratitude, that i don't have to endure life with your LACK of taste in music

  • @thegrinchl7

    YOU SUCK. She is awesome.

  • @southiebysouthend - I think she is "awesome" as well. You could wake the dead with that voice of hers.

  • Nicely sung! I still prefer The Dubliners version where Ronnie Drew sang it in a mournful tone his voice really suited the song. It can be found on their album 30 years a-greying if anyone is interested!

  • I love it! Would like to sit in that room and take it all in!

  • truly magnificent. Where can I buy their music?

  • l love you guys no one sings it better thank you and GOD BLESS mike

  • I think she is a world treasure... can we borrow her. Iris..Your words are worth a million pictures...Paddy

  • i love poh_23

  • crying crying

    very very touched

    I feel sorry for women

    for mothers, crying: (

  • Nice

  • I wonder if this song is the origin of the phrase "Pie in the sky when you die."

  • Not sure who has been noted on the video, but it's Ali Bain fiddle(L), Jay and Molly Unger on fiddle, guitar, Russ Barenberg on mando.

Is that Phil Cunningham on Accordion? How old is this vid?

Who else is in here? Great music, effortlessly presented!

  • @jondoe8889 Jay Ungar who wrote and performed "Ashokan Farewell" in Ken Burns's Civil War? That's him?

    Wow. Great catch. Thanks.

  • @jondoe8889 Yep, it's Phil Cunningham.

  • beautiful

  • different dimension when Iris starts singin !!

  • @bazthehandyman Iris is great but would it kill her to smile a little? Michelle & the Irish lassie seem to be having a grand ol' time. Iris looks like she's sitting outside of her dentist's office. C'mon Iris. Lighten up, Hon.You guys produced something special here. ;>)

  • My Dad's 18 grandchildren sang this song at his funeral.

  • @agassizbeekeeper that is just so beautiful.

  • i love this version. perfect.

  • I think this is my favorite version ever.

  • What a beautiful rendition of a timeless classic. Kudos to all. "Yeah!" is right, Michelle.

    10!!!!!

  • This is music that my ancestors played when they arrived in the Carolina mountains after being kicked out of Scotland after the '45.

  • nice

  • 18 people don't care for beautiful harmony and angelic voices.

  • I can't stop listening to this. I particularly enjoy grabbing my banjo and playing along. The harmony and awesome voices of these women sends tingles down my spine

  • wow i dont even really like country music but this is freaking amazing

  • I encourage you to watch the HBO movie "Iron Jawed Angels" about the women's sufferance movement in which this song is prominent.

  • The lead guitar is Russ Baremberg

  • Super Song !!!! The best versions

  • Definitely my favourite version of this beautiful song. Thanks for positing it.

  • The national anthem of Country music.

  • thank you for sharing this beauty.

  • Iris Dement is a national treasure.

  • @bilkoz01 - Ugh! If you say so.

  • My god, that shrill nasal honk! We could use her in a national emergency! HONK! HONK! HONK!

  • wow powerful

  • The circle of my family has been broken I can't wait for God" to put us together again;along with friends. Beautiful Singing young ladys; Keep it going-- 5 stars + for you ***** Thanks --

  • Beautiful arrangement. Angelic Voices. Dedicated to Harold J. Fisher my Father. Who passed on Dec. 13, 2010.

  • OOOH...Blessed....

  • Beautiful. Will you sing at my funeral?

  • I get the impression they really enjoyed these sessions, real music by real musicians, not the short sell by date, pre packaged manufactured rubbish foisted on us by Simon Cowell and co !!

  • this is the same version as Randy Travis! I love it! :))

  • Hey yankeeclipper2, one of these "southern belles" is Canadian (Michelle), and the other is Irish (Mairead)! ;-)

  • @GuitarzanOO50 And there is a problem with that? You forgot Kathy Mattea. This song goes back to about 1838 when Scots/Irish brought a similar version and then the slaves in the South took it and added more flavor and I don't see an Black Americans here either. Silly Guitarzan0050!

  • From all the versions of 'Will the circle be unbroken' this is the best one. Iris DeMent, Michelle Wrigth and that other woman (excuse me for forgetting names) sing it with their heart...

  • i love this song...always i had been hearing on my way to work...

  • really good harmonies, i enjoy the folk music sound.

  • Great singing and wonderful job on the instrments. I play this a lot on my guitar Thanks!

  • Yes sir, praise the lord, sung by fine southern belles, a great song tears flowing as I listen. Well done. 5/5.

  • This was one of the songs that we sang at our family reunion in West Virginia. I never paid much attention to the lyrics until my Dad died. Then I listened to this one and man did I cry. Such a beautiful version.

  • Makes me think of my mom's death 4 years ago at Thanksgiving. Only true country hearts can sing this song decently.

  • Perfect.

  • kinel fire, this is gooooooooooooood.

  • Iris dement is phenominol. She has a voice that could blister paint, but there is something about her that is wonderful and fascinating! I keep coming back to her.

  • Iris Dement has a voice that could curdle milk and blister paint, but there is something about her, perhaps her songs like "Living in the Wasteland", that is fascinating.. Though it pains me, in a way, to say this, she has my vote!

    Rick, the Miami miscreant

  • Do you know where I can find this track as an audio file?

  • some gorgeous voices and faces here

  • this is a awesome song . and these ladies sing it so well...

  • im really glad my girlfriend was not around to see me cry while listening

  • @Pllotrcm,

White people's music? No, this is music for His people. Since you obviously have no clue as to what I'm speaking about I suggest you get a Bible and read it. It's a shame you have to categorize according to a specific ethnicity or race. Makes life a lot worse and I'm grateful I don't have the same problem.

  • HA HA This is white people's music.. ha ha

  • @PIlotrcm Really?

  • great music

  • All The Best From Good Ole Germany

  • The only song that can match the pain of mising my momma.

  • Nothing but good remarks:)

That says something about this music.

    Peace

  • I love the Carter family version. But the Carter family didn'y have Iris Dement. Either way it's a beautiful song. So earnest and honest. They really don't make songs like this anymore.

  • Hi kk9911:

I love this version of Will the Circle be Unbroken. I know the names of some of the performers. I would like to know the finger pattern for the lead guitar. where could I find it? I have looked all over and I cannot find it. Who is the lead guitar player?

    Thank you,

    Respectfully,

    Louie in Manteca, CA

  • @macilb

sorry, I can't help you on that.

  • @macilb Do you mean strum pattern or chords used?

  • I really like this version, but can't find the audio available for purchase anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    Allan

Click on the link for Video2MP3 and have the video converted to mp3.

  • @pastore0506

I tried to do as you suggested, but I get a "invalid URL" message. What am I doing wrong?

  • @04460

I had that problem with the HQ version but managed to download the ordinary one (link on left)

  • @pastore0506

I tried using the standard quality button and got the same "invalid URL" message. Is there a link for Video2MP3 on this page? I goggled Video2MP3, and found several different ones, maybe I'm using the wrong service.

  • @04460

I tried the HQ link a few minutes ago and it worked. However, I have uploaded an audio file to my Box account. You should be able to download it from there. I have sent you the link via PM.

  • @pastore0506

I have been trying to find this as an download for months without success, Do you know where I can find the link you refer to, or could you please send me the link?
