The electric piano sounds awesome at the beginning and again in the middle. This stuff is so stinking classic,it will be perfectly appropriate for any generation! They just need to get the ears out of the gutter of rap and Bieber and Cyrus and listen to some real rock music..........Then they will know...............
Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975) is Elton John's last masterpiece, ending a long series of ones. In this song, I love the piano part!
Saw him, and the new Band play this at the Wembley Stadium all dayer, Stackridge, Rufus, Joe Walsh, The Eagles,(their first European Tour) ,The Beach Boys, then Elton To finish it off.
It was very risky to follow The Beach Boys, as they played two hours of Hits, but he pulled it off.
The whole album was played, and then his big hits, Funeral for a friend,Saturday Nights Alright,( with Caleb Quaye doing a Chuck Berry Duckwalk all over the stage.) a brilliant days music, for only £25 .
Great to hear this again after SO many years. My sister and I used to always try to sing along with this and try to figure out how the words went as kids.
This whole album describes my whole year during sixth grade(a couple or so years ago), sometimes fun, sometimes sad, and a dark time in between. This is an ultimate life saver, and I would love to thank Elton and Bernie for everything they ever collaborated on. Amazing song, love it so much I have it on vinyl and CD.
I was 10 when I was into this. I haven't heard these songs in years but now it all comes back. I had this on vinyl back in the day. Now I'm a part time audio engineer/producer. I'd love to be able to record like tey did back then. 2 inch analog tape sounds so good.
@kylechinault1 digital is a scam, analog vinyl is crisper and warmer. Cds just don't scratch up like records- thats their main advantage, cds of course are now obsolete with mp3. The future is now .
This album was about Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The entire experience. I daresay if you didn't like it, then you don't REALLY know them, or understand them.
This album was far and away my least favorite of Elton John's. I distinctly remember thinking after trying to listen to it when it came out "well Elton John is over for me". I know a lot of other people felt the same way. It just seemed too self-indulgent with the whole biography theme. I'm now re-listening to all the songs on it to see if I was unfair back then.
I have to disagree, this was one of my favorites...it was rock of The Westies that threw me. there were a couple good songs on it, but it was my least favorite.
Captain Fantastic and Goodby Yellow Brick Road, two of his alltime best.
Also, first time seeing Elton live was October 1974 in Cleveland.....
I love Elton's new album The Union, with Leon Russell, getting excellent reviews including 5 stars in Rolling Stone- for me, his best since Capt Fantastic, which is probably his peak (as Elton himself has said)
@mizofan I think the union is the best album since Songs From The West Coast, but I think is not as good as it. The union repeats much of the earlier songs of elton.
One of the first E.J albums I ever bought and this was my favourite song. I first heard Bitter Fingers in 1975 when living in Highbury, North London. I was staying just round the corner from Furlong road off Holloway road where the great man once lived. Thanks for posting..
so happy listening to music from a more simple time. I do believe I have every single early Elton John album he put out. I recall buying a ticket to see him live for $6.00. Those were the days.
Yeah, my first concert ticket in '81 was $12. Even for back then and the '70s, I don't see how anybody made any money back. I don't know. I 'm sure money was made off concerts, and lots of it. My how times have changed though.
Why doesn't FM Rock radio play this song on the radio? I never heard this song on the radio and I think its one of Elton's best. The whole album is underated.
Man, I haven't heard this one in years but I still remember all the words. Another of Elton's masterpieces - absolutely timeless, like all great music.
It still brings back memories of 8 tracks and wide open young people with the whole future in front of them. The generations since then havent had anything like the music we had back in the 70's. It was a great time to be alive.
I absolutely LOVE "Captain Fantastic". It's one one of his classic concept albums all about the history of him and Bernie Taupin and the whole experience of songwriting. "Bitter Fingers" basically explains what a struggling songwriter would go through. I still have my mom's original copy of the album, complete with original poster, lyrics book, and scrapbook.
I bought this album on cassette when I was 15. I shortly thereafter got an album version which was far better to have because of the amazing cover artwork and superb collection of inserts that came in the album package. CF is great for these portions alone. Elton may have had better albums musically than this one, but CF is just as welcome to listen to as well as look at.
My favorite song on this album is the one thats playing at the time. I love them all!!!!! Its just my favorit and most carefree time of my life, Yeah 1975, if I could only go back for one night. Love thoes memories
not only did he make good music. but he had someone WRITE a song and elton turned it into a song. its like bernie taupan brought the marble and elton sculped it
@clicktheyellowbox yeah I was the same when I was younger, never really liked any of the stuff that people thought was new and hip, I thought it was all garbage but loved the oldies
Good for you. Enjoy it. When I was a kid my older brother had bought it... I remember playing it for a friend. This was the opening song, I believe. Loved the piano. The song just is an introduction what is deeper and amazing music. Hard to imagine a better creative pairing then Reg and BT.
@beanworldcows I was only 14 years old the year this came out! I'll always remember it because it was one of the records that really defined the summer of 75.
@beanworldcows yeah this is a great album.I had it back in the 70's myself.Where is it now? Just keep in mind, you call Elton a music genious, which is rightly said, music genious. But he has a lyric writer, not himself, his name is Bernie Taupin. However,I am not saying that Elton hasn't ever wriiten any lyrics himself he probably has and co wrote with Bernie, but Bernie is the main lyric writer.Just wanted to share that with you since you mentioned your young age.Enjoy.
LOVED this albuem--I too listened to it until I heard it in my sleep--half the time didnt try to figure out the story behind the songs: NOw I can see into a lot of his lyrics...very interesting...but the songs are still so awesome!!!!
