  • Hi- I need to remove the white background from a logo to be used in print at 300 dpi. Do I use the same process and then save as a GIF? I must have some of the settings wrong, because I tried that and still get a white box when placing the logo in Quark. Using PSE 6. Any advice?

  • @defurry Only .gif and .png files can be saved with transparent backgrounds. For best results, save as png.

  • Thank You So Much Bill! This is the best - and most easy-to-understand - instructions that I've ever seen on Transparent backgrounds. Appreciate your help!

  • Thank you Bill. This is much more helpful than anything that Adobe provides.

  • Huge help, thank you so much.

  • thanks for your help - I'm not trying to do a video. I'm doing a website.

See I have a transparent image that repeats 960 x 2 pix. It's the background for the content text of a website.

I have this 960 x 2 pix image that is already a transparent greyish. I need it darker -

    to see the copy.

You see, the image behind the transparent image/content box is light and so my white lettering is not showing up well on the transparent image I have - it needs to be darker.

    Thanks

  • Sorry - left my comment in the wrong place. I'm not making a movie. I have a transparent image. I am using as background on a website so my picture shows behind. It's the container bkground for my copy/text. I've spent 4 hours trying to learn how to make the transparent image a darker tint in Elements 9. Every thing I search is what you show - but that's not what I need. Any help is greatly appreciated I must complete this!

  • @niboryentruoc In Photoshop Elements, create a new layer and place it below the image and text layer. Add a color to that layer, and then adjust the opacity of the layer using the layer effects.

  • What if you want to have a tint to the transparent part? Like I want to have an image, then transparent background for copy or text - there's nothing on Youtube that addresses this.

  • @niboryentruoc In Movie Studio, just add a video track below the image, add a color to the track, and lower the opacity to make it transparent and tinted.

  • THANK YOU. I've been using the Remove From Selection Tool in Magic Extractor...xD

  • I have been trying to find out how to make my web site pictures transparent and your video was so easy. thank you so much your video was so easy to understand and what a breeze that was. picture looks great!

  • Thanks so much, GuerillaBill - I have been searching for days for an answer to this problem and your tutorial solved it - it is the best ever.

    Gabrielle

  • Thanks Bill. This is what I was looking for!

  • Thanks alot!

  • What if the image you are using has some white inside of it? How do you unselect certain white areas with the wand?

  • @Timothius25 If the white is inside the selected area, it will remain and won't be a problem.

Only the outlined area is removed.

  • Brilliant, exactly what I've needed to know for a while now!! Thank you

  • is it possible to make the background invisible and save it as a .tga ? i believe thats something with alpha channels or something ?

  • @thelolmanlol96 Not with tga in Photoshop Elements, but you can in Photoshop. You can get png with transparent background in Elements.

  • Thanks so much. This was very helpful!

  • Love your video, but didn't work for me. I start with a jpg file but I'm never offered saving as format .png or .gif. Any ideas?

  • @weberpa Jpg file format doesn't have transparent background. Start with a new image, choose transparent background, and them drag your jpg onto the image - as shown in the above video.

  • Hey great video!

    But i've got one question

I did everything you said, and when i save my edited picture i get the square background instead of the white ..

    Thanks in advance :)

  • @TheOthli The checkboard background shows the image is transparent. to save as transparent, save as either .png or .gif

  • Thanks!!! :D

  • thanks helped me out, video liked

  • Thank you Bill!

  • Thank you!!

  • I THANK YOU so much....you helped me a lot & you were quite clear. Just a simple thing I had to do, and I searched everywhere on the internet how to do it, and all I was missing was what background to use and which file type to save it as. Thank you so much for this informative video! :)

  • Thanks a bunch! :)

  • I am trying to cut out my name (it contains colours) but when i copy and paste it it only shows up in black , can anyone help me ?

  • @sjoerda When creating the image in Photoshop Elements, start with 'new image', 'transparent background', 'video template', and choose the full size of the video screen.

Then create the image, save it as a .png or .psd and open in Sony Vegas, and place on a video track above the track where you want the image overlayed.

  • @guerillabill thnx it helped, only problem i have now is how do i make my ''name'' smaller to get it into the corner?

  • @sjoerda Use Pan & Crop in Vegas to resize and position

  • i want to cut out my name with a bit of the background, but when i copy and click paste, nothing happens

  • Thank you soo much!

  • thank you :)) very good video! :)

  • Thank you sir! I was on many other videos trying to figure this out...and this was by far the easiest! I've tested it out already and it works!! THANK YOOOOOUUUUU!

  • The photoshop elements ntsc preset has a default white background. When you change it to transparent, the preset name changes to custom, because you have changed the background color. Everything else about the ntsc preset stays the same

  • gonna try this need this for C#

  • ah awesome thanks!

  • BILL, Many thanks - really helpful

  • real helpfull thanks

  • im in college an im struggling with this lol thx man

  • I need to make a TGA file with no background but his way is not working plz Help!

  • When needed transparent backgrounds, save as png, not tga.

Targa (.tga) files can be saved with a alpha channel and will be transparent IF the program opening the targa uses alpha channels.

If the file is saved and there is only one layer (and it's transparent) or it has a layer under it not active, Targa files default and put a white background under

it. Avoid this by saving as .png

  • Thank you so much.

I was looking for an easy way to do this on PhotoShop Elements~

  • Wow, thats really easy if you know how on it :D Thanks a lot!

  • Thanks. I'm such a Photoshop noob, and this really helped.

  • 10x mate :)

  • Im still getting the white background when i save as JPEG (JPG) !!!! ----.--- HELPS!

  • JPG can't save a transparent background.

That's why the tutorial says to save as PNG

  • Thank you so much. I was having the hardest time trying to get logos or pictures on my video! Thanks a bunch! I'm making sure to subscribe to you. =]

  • Thank You;)

  • how do i make a dropdown with my new transparent backround?

  • Put the transparent background on a video track above the main video track. Then use event pan & crop to bring the image onto the screen, and key frame the ending location.

  • how to i place what i saved in a video program? as a dropdown?

  • You can use the image as a logo, or a bug, or in pan & crop, or as an overlay - basically any way you want

  • wow, Big thanks man :D

  • hahahahha, its mr maky from southpark; because taking drugs is bad mmkay. xD

  • can you do a lot more effects

    with the new version

  • If you mean how to resize in Photoshop Elements, use the selection tool to select the element to be resized, and then drag the corners of that selection to resize it.

  • when i put the picture in the transperant box,, it only shows abit of the picture and leaves out half of it,, can you help?

  • You may need to resize the picture to fit all of it in the box.

  • Thanks! Why didn't I think of youtube before!

  • Exactly what I was looking for, thanks for uploading! Keep them coming!

  • thank you thank you thank you!

  • Alot of the time when using photoshop I have images on transparent backgrounds, but when I put them into another program such as Microsoft Access they have a white background. If you have a solution to this could you message me? Thanks alot, your videos are very helpful.

  • To preserve the transparent background, save the image as either .png or .gif

If you save in other formats, the transparency will go away.

  • hey i have to ask, when your using photoshop and you have a picture and a background and wanna paste the picture on to the background so you can see both it and the picture how do you do that cause i pasted a pic onto this background i got and i cant seem to get them to be one picture can you help...btw great video i like your pointer ;D

  • Open both images in Photoshop.

Then open the image you want to use as the background. Then with that image still open, drag the second image from the bottom of the screen onto your main image. Then resize the image to fit.

  • ty that helped :D

  • Can you put that into Adobe Premiere Elements? and also can you make it move anywhere you want it to?

  • Yes, you can bring transparent images into Premiere Elements.

I don't know if you can do a drop down in Premiere Elements. You can in Sony Vegas Movie Studio very easily.

  • Thanks. By move it around i mean can you like animate it to make it move around in your video where you can make it follow something and it stays in your video? One still image?

  • You can in Sony Movie Studio. But I don't know about Adobe Premiere Elements.

I don't use Premiere Elements to edit my videos.

  • Excellent and so useful. Thanks for another great tutorial.

  • thanks so much!
