I have never been in Derry, but this song always brings a tear to my eye when I am listening it. When it touches the heart of someone who has never been in Derry or in Ireland, you know it is something special and this song has a soul and this is much more than a song. Luke Kelly's version is good, but this is Phil's song and I believe nobody can sing it like Phil. After all, this is a song from his heart.
OMG I love this song but its a shame that this man and his acquaintances have become evil. They are all a part of a paedophile ring, This is true for people with the dreaded money. When will the scum that rule the earth wake up.
good song but the first time i heard this song was sung by the blarney pilgrims in very strong voice, i can barely hear half the words phil is singing. brilliant song though
@thomasdarroch66 I know what you mean there. Kelly had power and purity of voice. None better, to my mind. but coulter, to his home town................ Only one winner there for me, sorry Luke, though you are a god to me anyway...
We will remember Phil for this song, but to be honest he never wrote a bad song, from Euro V right up to today, ur right Susan does a great version, but it is Derry song, and nobody can sing it like Phil, simply a genius, wish we heard more of him
As I'm sure most true enthusiasts know Phils first choice for singing this song was non other then the great Luke Kelly, for good reason. No one sings it like Luke did.
Hi! Does anyone happen to know where this clip is from? Which year was it filmed and where was it aired/ published? Would be really helpful! Love the song :)
It always amazes me how people can relate to poverty. I can assure you Phil is very wealthy. There is no need for any human to be poor or die from starvation.
Since Mr Coulter was born in 1942, it's not about his childhood in the 70s, it's about his childhood in the 50s and the "troubles" in the 70s which virtually destroyed Derry or Londonderry depending on your conviction. A brilliant, heart rending narrative set to music.
Does anybody know what one of Phil's bassists, Geraint Roberts, is up to these days? I have an unreleased album of his at home on tape, went to see him live when I was about... 11.. with my dad. I was blown away, he played a 7-string fretless. He even plays a cover of Donna Lee on the album... But he is nowhere to be found on the net!
Just wish he'd sung this a tiny bit louder (the 4th verse especially is really supposed to sting the heart, and should be slightly louder, as opposed to the soft childhood memories)... but nonetheless, exactly what I pictured the first time I heard this, by Ronan Tynan Perfect ending, too.
the town i wish to know well...indeed i shall breathe that derry air, one day...xo mo brea;)..beautifully conveyed by the one & only phil coulter...peace to eire, mayor...let music heal thine soul, & remember the days that shall be once again...jillypeacekidd:)
Phil refers to the town/city as Derry so lets all respect that here, call it what you like elsewhere. But nobody can say can Phil's words arent truthful.

Yes, the Catholic Irish call it Derry, but the English Protestants call it Londonderry. It's the same city; sadly, both of these groups-and many others who live there-have had to suffer an awful lot over the past 4 decades.
love this song, my mun is teaching it to me, trying to perfect it but Phil Coulter is a hard act to follow, anyway I have lot of time I am just 11 years old but so far so good. Practice makes Perfect!
I've lived here in derry for seventy odd years and I love it, the people the old streets and of course phil singing this song. I love the Waterside too.
Phil brings more emotion to the song, more than Luke could, because HE had actually 'played ball by the old gas yard wall' and HE had seen 'it through without complaining'...
@GlasgowCeltic88 Luke often cried when he sang this song. Don't understand how you could say this version haas more emotion. He always seemed to identify with people who had it tough, coming from Sheriff street flats as he did. And of course he was the most incredible singer we've ever had
why call it londonderry tho? nothing to do with me being catholic... but emm just call it derry its shorter? aha, and yes its a shit shit town.... im going to the army soon to get away from the shithole aha full of wee wankers like
I had the pleasure of meeting Phil just after my 18th back home in the millenimum forum in derry 3 years ago, he is a fantastic musician, he puts on such a brillant show, I wish I was at home to see him performing again in derry later this month.I am at university in edinburgh and everytime I hear this song it makes me think of my boyfriend, family and friends back home.beautiful song
I went to the same high school in Derry, St. Columb's College, at the same time as Phil Coulter. We never shared a class. He was talented then, but it's wonderful to witness his success over the years. I met him again about 20 years ago after a concert in Vancouver.
This song really does evoke memories of Derry for me.
By the way, Irish poet Seamus Heaney attended the same school - he was about 2 years ahead of us.
My dad says this clip is from a documentary film from about 1970-1985, about irish folk music. He did have the documentary on VHS, but he lost it. I would like to watch that docu, but i can't find the name of it. Can someone tell me what's the title of that documentary?
My Dad remembers the very same documentary and I as well have been searching for it. Please, If you or anyone else should find it PLEASE let me know and I will do the same. Thanks, ~J~
For those of us not fortunate enough to be living in the Ireland right now, this song is an inspiration and beautiful reminder of Gods Paradise (Ireland). Singing about some of the worst times in such a wonderful way.
i thought Luke Kelly could never be equalled. Occasionally and only on irish songs i get a tremor (a physical, literal one) down my whole body when i hear a beautiful new song/version of a song. I got a huge one from this. Fantastic rendition. RIP Luke and good on ye Phil

This track surpasses 'Puppet on a String' AND 'Congratulations' in so many ways!

But as I'm not a hateful person I believe everyone is perfectly entitled to their own opinions.
