  • This is so beautiful. Thanks for posting it!

  • i still love this song thank you GlasgowCeltic88 for putting this on youtube.

  • I have always loved this song

  • Great song. I think that Phil's prayers were answered. Let's hope and continue to pray that the peace still lasts.

  • the twn i love so well u can stick ur british city of culture rite up ur HOLE TAL

  • I like this version. My only complaint is that the vocals could've been a bit louder. Kelyoneill has a version with Luke and Phil singing it.

    watch?v=Iub6yqJ_fYk

  • OMG I love this song but its a shame that this man and his acquaintances have become evil. They are all a part of a paedophile ring, This is true for people with the dreaded money. When will the scum that rule the earth wake up.

  • good song but the first time i heard this song was sung by the blarney pilgrims in very strong voice, i can barely hear half the words phil is singing. brilliant song though

  • The best thing to come out of the troubles was the music that was sung about it, I think everybody would agree with that

  • Londonderry the only county in ireland with 6 silence letters

  • phil coulter was a hotty

  • i prefer the power of like kellys voice for this song although this is still great

  • @thomasdarroch66 I know what you mean there. Kelly had power and purity of voice. None better, to my mind. but coulter, to his home town................ Only one winner there for me, sorry Luke, though you are a god to me anyway...

  • Ik ben een paar maal in Nd Ierland geweest en heb daar deze prachtige muziek leren kennen. Deze songs zijn gewoon super....Thank You.

  • We will remember Phil for this song, but to be honest he never wrote a bad song, from Euro V right up to today, ur right Susan does a great version, but it is Derry song, and nobody can sing it like Phil, simply a genius, wish we heard more of him

  • 1 word....AMAZING!!!!

  • I love this song

  • Heard alot of versions of this song (some good) but you can't beat the original. =)

  • @larne1111 Moot point. Beautiful song.

  • As I'm sure most true enthusiasts know Phils first choice for singing this song was non other then the great Luke Kelly, for good reason. No one sings it like Luke did.

  • 가슴이 아려요. 한국에서는 조영남이가 불러서 망쳐 놓은 노래. I love this song really which touch my heart.

  • Wow, this is one special video, so beautiful!

  • I've heard this song sung by Jim McCann, loved it, and love this version too! :D

  • my home town and a song that we learned in school as part of the curriculum in the 80's.

  • Hi! Does anyone happen to know where this clip is from? Which year was it filmed and where was it aired/ published? Would be really helpful! Love the song :)

  • It always amazes me how people can relate to poverty. I can assure you Phil is very wealthy. There is no need for any human to be poor or die from starvation.

  • Phil will be remembered mainly for this (and many other songs) as it is beautiful and because this made Luke Kelly weep.

  • What a great song written by the great scotsman that brought us the green fields of france

  • When I was young my ould lad played bad

Irish music So badly to death that if I had met

Big Tom I would have stabbed him and as for

Margo there was a short rope with a heavy

brick and hopefully a nearby river waiting

for her. I actually grew up and listened

and heard and what I heard surprised me.

I LOVE this song. PHIL COULTER is a legend.

  • One of my favourite songs ever written by Phil! I love it!

  • i ditn't know he had written it one of my favourit songs

  • Great stuff .... Love it ! :)

  • Magestical Saw Phil in Armagh lately Brought a tear to my eyes. An absolute gentleman stayed behind to sign everyones CDs a Legend

  • The best sung version of this song that I have head is from Paddy Reilly.

  • Since Mr Coulter was born in 1942, it's not about his childhood in the 70s, it's about his childhood in the 50s and the "troubles" in the 70s which virtually destroyed Derry or Londonderry depending on your conviction. A brilliant, heart rending narrative set to music.

  • where this song original from? Irish or norway?

one of most beautiful song ever.

  • @teardrop1mg It was written by Phil himself, about his childhood in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 70's....

  • @GlasgowCeltic88 If he was born in 42 he wasn't a child in the 70's. The first part is about his childhood, the later part is about the troubles.

  • @teardrop1mg Lol what made you think it was from Norway :/

  • @teardrop1mg

    how old is this guy?

  • @boasahr Born; 19 February 1942 (age 68)

  • @teardrop1mg Derry, North part of ireland

  • @teardrop1mg its irish

  • @teardrop1mg there is no Irish... But it is from Ireland

  • what a legend, i absolutely love his style of piano, he os one of my biggest influences when writing piano music. Thank you Phil for inspiring me

  • what's lost is NOT lost and gone forver. TAL

  • wow I didn;t know Phil wrote this. I adore the Irish Tenors' version :)

  • Does anybody know what one of Phil's bassists, Geraint Roberts, is up to these days? I have an unreleased album of his at home on tape, went to see him live when I was about... 11.. with my dad. I was blown away, he played a 7-string fretless. He even plays a cover of Donna Lee on the album... But he is nowhere to be found on the net!

  • Just wish he'd sung this a tiny bit louder (the 4th verse especially is really supposed to sting the heart, and should be slightly louder, as opposed to the soft childhood memories)... but nonetheless, exactly what I pictured the first time I heard this, by Ronan Tynan Perfect ending, too.

  • the town i wish to know well...indeed i shall breathe that derry air, one day...xo mo brea;)..beautifully conveyed by the one & only phil coulter...peace to eire, mayor...let music heal thine soul, & remember the days that shall be once again...jillypeacekidd:)

  • i love that song

  • superb hh

  • Phil refers to the town/city as Derry so lets all respect that here, call it what you like elsewhere. But nobody can say can Phil's words arent truthful.

  • One thing is for sure...for this Song he will be remembered

    at least by me

It made my friends mother cry....so there must be a mass of truth and honest feelings in it

I thank him for making and GlasgowCeltic88 for uploading it ;)

    Cheers

    Sam

  • Londonderry is a beatuful city,so is this song, it really puts Londoncerry on the Map.

    Londonderry-UK city of culture 2013.

  • Beautiful song and after visiting Derry it's even more beautiful!

  • What a wonderfull song. Got tears in my eyes.... Great!!!!!

  • I love Susan McCann's version too..i didn't know Phil wrote it. Wonderful..

Don't know Susan's cover... But will go look hit up.

    Thank you for commenting.

  • I love this song one of my favs

  • wow this is such a sad song, I didnt expect that

  • we learnt this song in school ! :L

I love it sooo much !

Love it soo much ! 'x

  • what makes this song so poweriful is that you really feel and have a connection with it. its a song made from your heart thanks for sharing

  • brilliant song from a beautifull song writer, the words speak for itself,no one wants to see things like this anymore,

  • christovski1 - your family lived there for over 400 years?

    That's all? Just 400 .....

And therein lies the problem in NI...

SUCH a beautiful son about Derry though...

  • this song is amazing

  • @MyThomas123 Thank you...

  • IRELAND IS BEAUTIFULL

  • @christovski1 Its was called its proper name derry long before u lot came over to ireland and started to TRY and take over.If u dont like living in ireland the fuck off like ur ancesters should have done 400 years ago

  • no people of ireland call it an doire so look it up 2 u c both sides call it derry so if u know ur history wud know the brits put london on 2 it 2 remember them its the apptice boys of derry the protestants bands r called so ur wrong pookerville

  • i love this song hail hail m8 god blesss an doire

  • Yes, the Catholic Irish call it Derry, but the English Protestants call it Londonderry. It's the same city; sadly, both of these groups-and many others who live there-have had to suffer an awful lot over the past 4 decades.

  • love this song, my mun is teaching it to me, trying to perfect it but Phil Coulter is a hard act to follow, anyway I have lot of time I am just 11 years old but so far so good. Practice makes Perfect!

  • i know his son ryan :)

  • i would love to live in a place like this!

  • I've lived here in derry for seventy odd years and I love it, the people the old streets and of course phil singing this song. I love the Waterside too.

  • There's something special about Phil singing this. Even Luke Kelly doesn't have the same effect, and that's saying something.

  • Well but I think it's because the song is the sad story of Phil and not Luke Kelly. That's it.

  • I agree.

Phil brings more emotion to the song, more than Luke could, because HE had actually 'played ball by the old gas yard wall' and HE had seen 'it through without complaining'...

  • @GlasgowCeltic88 Luke often cried when he sang this song. Don't understand how you could say this version haas more emotion. He always seemed to identify with people who had it tough, coming from Sheriff street flats as he did. And of course he was the most incredible singer we've ever had

  • @mACKs94 this song is about phil and derry not luke or dublin check out the song the dublin minstrel....

  • @mACKs94 the song is not a sad song its class

  • @christovski1 there is no london in derry.

  • @iradan64 there is in LondonDerry.

  • @iradan64 There is for anyone who wants there to be....if you understand the sentiments of the song you'll learn to live and let live.

  • any 1 eles think wen phil was young he look like liam neeson in this vid

  • im from kilkenny and its my fav irish song.... after the rose of mooncoin of course...kk for five in a row..up the cats

  • Who are you to say what our City is. It's only miserable and festering with hatred if you see it that way.

Evidently from this video Phil Coulter doesn't focus on it. Especially since this is majorly personal experience in the song too.

  • why call it londonderry tho? nothing to do with me being catholic... but emm just call it derry its shorter? aha, and yes its a shit shit town.... im going to the army soon to get away from the shithole aha full of wee wankers like

  • ah - that brought a tear to my eye! Fantastic :-)

  • brilliant song, almost as good as "Puppet on a String" and "Congratulations", two other great songs which he will always be remembered by.

  • @murrmac,

I'd have to disagree with you on that...

This track surpasses 'Puppet on a String' AND 'Congratulations' in so many ways!

As Phil has so often said; 'Of all the songs I have written. This, is the one I would like to be remembered for...'.

But as I'm not a hateful person I believe everyone is perfectly entitled to their own opinions.

    Thanks for the cooment,

    GC88

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Phil just after my 18th back home in the millenimum forum in derry 3 years ago, he is a fantastic musician, he puts on such a brillant show, I wish I was at home to see him performing again in derry later this month.I am at university in edinburgh and everytime I hear this song it makes me think of my boyfriend, family and friends back home.beautiful song

  • I went to the same high school in Derry, St. Columb's College, at the same time as Phil Coulter. We never shared a class. He was talented then, but it's wonderful to witness his success over the years. I met him again about 20 years ago after a concert in Vancouver.

This song really does evoke memories of Derry for me.

By the way, Irish poet Seamus Heaney attended the same school - he was about 2 years ahead of us.

  • beautiful phil bless you mate j vincent edwards

  • Fantastic song and man...

  • One of the most beatiful songs i've ever heard so far

  • Pure magic is Phil Coulter!

  • My dad says this clip is from a documentary film from about 1970-1985, about irish folk music. He did have the documentary on VHS, but he lost it. I would like to watch that docu, but i can't find the name of it. Can someone tell me what's the title of that documentary?

Sorry but i'm not very good at english

  • My Dad remembers the very same documentary and I as well have been searching for it. Please, If you or anyone else should find it PLEASE let me know and I will do the same. Thanks, ~J~

  • Most brilliant video !

  • I love this video.

  • For those of us not fortunate enough to be living in the Ireland right now, this song is an inspiration and beautiful reminder of Gods Paradise (Ireland). Singing about some of the worst times in such a wonderful way.

  • great song ive had many family members in Derry and this song is the only one that hits dead on

  • Best Song!

  • Wonderful song:

Happy memories and not so happy memories.

I have been listening to Phils awesome music for years.

Never thought I would be living in America back then.

  • Unbelievable Song by an Unbelievable Singer!!!

    God Bless Phil Coulter!!

    YNWA

    Tiocfaidh Ar LA!!!

  • Great Song from a great Son of Ulster

  • Cheers old man....

    Great Video....

  • Love this song! For the record, the house with the piano is his home in Buncrana, Co.Donegal. It is about 14 miles from Derry (and where I grew up)

  • globaljuice,

    Thank you for commenting...

Do you know if he still has his Pad (and piano) out on Buncrana?

    Sláinte,

  • Wow

i thought Luke Kelly could never be equalled. Occasionally and only on irish songs i get a tremor (a physical, literal one) down my whole body when i hear a beautiful new song/version of a song. I got a huge one from this. Fantastic rendition. RIP Luke and good on ye Phil

Cheers also for this GC88, hail hail

  • fatherted101.

    Sláinte a chara

    GC88

    Hail, hail!!!

  • Two geniuses Luke and Phil... But I recommend you go and listen to music from other places as well mate... Good music, no matter where it comes from, will give you them chills and tremors...

    All the best

  • yep,the house is still there,he goes there every once in a while...now based in Bray,Co.Wicklow for the last 18 odd years.

  • Ok, I'm hopeless: I hear "Bray", and my first reaction is, "Oh, does he know Diane Duane?"

  • phil is the best at this song

  • I know we all say Luke sang the definitive version of this song, but there's something special about Phil singing his own song.

  • GC88,

No, that's not necessary. I understand that's how you feel! Phil, has done a lot for us fans in the US with the lads of Celtic Thunder, and he's such a sweet man to talk to. I just like to think of him as alive and well and still writing and composing great music! Beautiful video! Thank you for sharing. :)

    ~Megan

  • Phil Coulter is a brilliant man! I love everything about him!

  • Except I don't exactly like the comment attached with the video..I saw Phil 5 days ago, and he's alive and well not to mention the backbone of Celtic Thunder...lets not think of him passing on just yet!

  • Megan1199.

I could change it for you... If you'd like?
