Got to go with the poster who mentions Herol Graham as the best not to win a title.Laing was very good,very entertaining and Ive no doubt he had it in him to be world champ but I think Herol was better all round and what about Colin Jones,he beat Laing if Im not mistaken.

Laing was an awesome talent, those that say otherwise baffle me, he just happened to be unlucky enough to be around at the same time as Colin Jones, who is also under rated, a great era of welterweight boxing.

Not saying tha Laing was better than Leonard at all. All I am saying is. This fight ? Laing won it by a mile. Forget the split decision. Won it ..........BY.......A ..........MILE !! Post Leonard rematch. Duran had trouble with shifty boxers. Laing ? A shifty boxer. Benitez ? A shifty boxer. Duran lost this fight against a ? Shifty boxer. I thought Laing did a similar job as Benitez did on Duran to be honest. Styles make fights don't they ? The long and short of it is that its a "W" for Laing.

The lead rights and there is no denying it. Laing landed a couple of cracking lead rights among other shots in this fight.,double and triple jabs and the odd class uppercuts that landed flush were not scoring punches then ? Duran was also easily man handled during the latter part of this fight too. Yeah I agree..............NOT ! Duran ? LOST THIS FIGHT BY A MILE.

Been following boxing meself for 30years.Have to say. KL was easily on par with Herol Graham.You should bear in mind also that KL rarely trained full on for fights.He trained { and it showed !!} for the Duran fight and look @ the result. Here's hoping that where ever he is,KL is living a nice and comfortable life.That is the least we all deserve I think you'll agree.

Can't agree with Buncey's view that Kirkland Laing is the best british fighter never to win a world title I always thought that Herol Graham deserved that accolade.

However I agree its a shame that Kirk never got the big breaks that he & his talent deserved. Whilst on the subject follow up films on Wilfred Benetez (criminally forgotten in my view), the late Johnny Owen and Gerald McClellan are long, long overdue...

Dave Charnley and Alan Rudkin were arguably the best post-war British fighters never to win world titles. Rudkin had to travel abroad for all his world title shots. He was very unlucky not to get the decision against Lionel Rose and also gave Fighting Harada an excellent fight. Charnley was also desperately unlucky in his second fight with Joe Brown. Rudkin and Charnley's achievements are sadly overlooked by British fight fans.

Herol was at least as good, and always turned up in shape, so on that basis, you could give it to him, but there was never anything on his record to rival a win over Duran. That was Laings shining moment; Graham would have had to beat Hagler to exceed it, really.
