@skybart it may be a different arrangement on "sunny side of the street", or someone may have just done kind of a generic jazz piano thing (not necessarily any particular song, just bits and pieces from other songs)
I heard many people playing Bach or Beethoven or Chopin. Whoever was playing it never felt as natural as jazz improvisation. I was always wondering how do you people think of music, especially jazz music. Do you memorize all those chords and um... "compute" those voicings and chord transitions when you're playing? If so, how do you make it so smooth and natural, how do you make it feel like a flow, like it's streaming out of you?
i don't... understand. sure, my knowledge of jazz music is downright pitiful, but how is this song so SERENE AND PEACEFUL AND DIVINE??? more like, how do YOU play it that way???
The first chord on Misty is a tritone, right? I figured as much since it's reharmonized as a slash chord Eb with a D in the bass. Could you also just play whole tone harmony when you see these types of slash chords?
@1979saxman The first chord is a D with an Eb in the bass. Another way of describing it would be an Eb diminished chord. It acts to sort of create a tension that is released when the EbMaj7 arrives. An Eb whole/half diminished scale sit nicely over this chord - see 0:35
@jazz2511 This is suggestion of a Bb alt. chord rather than a Eb dim since the Eb dim would have to have a Db note in it and this is a natural D not a Db and is more of a augmented sound rather than a dim sound. Two major differences between aug sound and dim sound. It is common in Jazz resolving from V7 or V alt to the tonic I Maj7+5 or I maj7 mixing the embellishements. Very good choice to start the song though! and can end the same way as well, to remain unresolved!! :)
great stuff!!! i am learning jazz too, and this video does a great job of teaching by the way everything is combined: the chords, individual notes, and sound of bass in background... wow!
when pple play jazz like this , do they play strictly according to note values? i am classical trained, and note values are so important, but i'm so weak at counting beats, will jazz be easier for pple like me? it seems like u just play as u like it.
Depends on what you mean by this. I mean, for me, I play according to the note values I hear in my head as I improvise. If you mean play the notes by what's on the page, then no.
Best thing for you to do if you're new at this is listen! There are a lot of great artists and music out there, so expose your ear and get a feel for it!
@ffour- I'm just a music lover, not a musician, but I think that to play jazz you need to gain a sense of freedom and individual creativity. (Sth. that a classical background can hardly give you.) Just sit on the piano and let you soul flow... if you are blessed with the gift of music something beautiful will come out of it. Also, listen to the great jazz pianists like Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, and get inspired. Cheers.
This is not fair!!! Listen to that bass, when you are playing the piano where do you find a guy like that? That is the reason I switched to a Hammond Organ, we have our own bass!!!
What software do you need to make that "Real Book" style sheet music? I've seen a lot of things with the same font, but I don't know what to look for.

@jazzpiano01 check out an incredibly different version of misty played by richard groove holmes. you would never think this piece could be played that way! and tell me you didn't like that one just as much as this.
@horatiuroman You are right. I liked his version very much. His take on it is very lively. As a jazz piano player myself i tend to play more ballads and classic jazz standards. I like that laid back type of feel when i play. But don't get me wrong i love hearing new versions of the same song. there are so many ways that one can interoperate a song. It is refreshing to hear new artists and their take on pieces. Thanks for sharing.
yes brilliant and well played. Especially liked that bit at the end when you run down the b major scale with the parrallel structures. Can you explain where they are borrowed from and if these is just the scale to hamonize that trick over a bflat 7 chord?? Thanks

@1979saxman
- You can also call it a Ebmi/maj7 (#11) with the maj7 (D) in the bass.
You play the 1/5 with your left hand, and the mi3/(#11)/maj7 with your right hand.
That's what makes the chord a mi/maj.
