Perhaps the double talk saying about no pedigree is supposed to by a complement? The actual Humvee probably has the purest pedigree of US only made parts because federal law prohibits foreign ownership of US military supplier. Of course the Tahoe is more consumer oriented, not having been designed to negotiate landmines... As for the Commander, Daimler is obviously riding the Jeep's wave of success, but then reducing the Jeep line to hand me down components from other Daimler/Chrysler vehicles.
As it happens the Jeep and Hummer vehicles are related thru the American Motor Car company (AMC). The AMC spun of AM general to focus on military applications, while AMC was bought by Chrysler who kept the Jeep line of vehicles and pretty much scrapped everything else. In this way, the hummer is a kind of bastard step-brother to the Jeep. Sure he may be bigger and braunier, but he has no pedigree.
AMC spun off AM General because Renault obtained controlling interest of AMC. Since Renault was controlled by the French Government back then, the U.S. couldn't provide a military contract, so AMC had to spin off their military division for the Humvee, forming AM General.
As for "Hummer," that's a GM trademark for marketing the Humvee as well as non-AM General models H2 and H3.
As for pedigree, that's meaningless since the military outgrew the GP. Practicality is more important.
I've checked it out. It was okay, but for the money, I'd rather get a Chevy Tahoe. And, at least that will have better room in the back, unlike the Commander, which looks big, but is rather small inside.
And, to top it off, if I really wanted a Jeep SUV, I'll stick with the classic AMC/Renault-designed XJ series Cherokee with the AMC 4.0 I-6. So well designed, even Chrysler couldn't screw it up too badly with their creative engineering.
Excellent utility, excellent reliability, and excellent serviceability. It was designed as a truck, first and foremost as opposed to a compromise between a truck and a car, which epitomizes the modern SUV today.
I'm just saying if I had the money, I'd rather have a Tahoe than a Commander.
But, as I said, if I really wanted a Jeep SUV (and, perhaps I should've added an SUV in general), I'd buy a used XJ Cherokee. They're cheap, tough, and easy to work on. That's more of a true Jeep than the Commander will ever be, especially given DaimlerChrysler's new tendency to badge-engineer new models of Jeep vehicles.
that was awesome

The Jeep WJ (Grand Chero) is the perfect size. Not too big or small. I do like the styling of the Commander though..more distinctive than Tahoe.

I'd rather have a Tahoe too. Bigger. Better looking. More Luxurious. Faster. Better fuel Economy.

65 years of legacy means nothing if you can't build something properly today.
If 65 years was important, then why does the U.S. military drive AM General Hum-vees, which replaced Jeeps?
