seriously, videos like this should win awards for best video.... not the stuff that usually wins for VMAs and stuff like that which usually pretty unoriginal
I... This song makes me cry. This was the song I heard the morning after me and my ex split up. It was our song. We used to sing it while we held hands.... and now.. it does nothing but hurt. Yet I love it.
I remember when this song came out I was in 8th grade and we were picking our class graduation song and I wanted this one SO bad but they said it was too slow so they picked "I believe I can fly" insted...
I dont like this video =/ no offence against the song or anything..but the video could have been better. Dont negative me just cuz I dissed the video. C'mon...honestly, they could have made a more powerful video. This
As much as I LOVE this song, I'll have to agree. Not that this video is that bad (I've seen a lot worse) but this song represents WAY more emotion and meaning then this video expresses.
Existentialism is basically the idea that existence is a series of free choices, the responsibility for which cannot be lessened by any set of rules, any circumstances, or any outside influences.
I interpreted the title (which I love) as someone who takes a step back and looks at the world in third-person during prom night. I do this all the time myself; becoming impersonal with a situation and viewing it through fresh eyes.
This song is gorgeous. A student in my old high school's piano class played this not too long ago, and it made me realise just HOW absolutely gorgeous this song is. And how much certain lyrics relate to my life.
so you're telling me John Nolan is happiest on the PATH train during rush hour and doesn't want to change that for anything and wants to stay like that forever?
I think this song is about someone's first love. They feel spontaneous, yet they're keeping that delicate balance of a relationship. They don't know where they're going or where they'll end up, all they know is their love, and to make the most of it.
I would figure this video would have millions of views.......hmmmm!!!! I love it. Hey, you guys should check out The Thirty on Myspace when you get a chance. Thanks!!!
I'm pretty sure this is talking about a relationship with someone. Like he is talking about how he has the same innocence and opportunities that you feel in high school on Prom Night. And my guess with the whole sing me anything, he is daring you to find the same. I think he is talking about how wonderful it is and he wants you to do the same.
Sing like you think no one's listening. Be real to someone for a change. It must be nice to have someone who will listen to whatever it is that you have to say and connect. So much so that you would fight for such a comfort. Or something. Idunno. Happy 420!
thats sad that your world revolves around physical beauty. When all of that is gone, you'll be a sad mess, reduced to a puddle of your lies. And its really sad that you don't get the music video. It has such a good message if your eyes are open to see it.

wow ppl are still debating about what me and that person were talking about. dang, anyways what i wanted to say but ended up getting distracted cuz of the idiot. i like this song,
No you're not crazy honostly I beleive in both, I mean everything in evolution makes sense with the bible, I men billions of years could take just seven days to god. I mean I beleive time is nothing to him since he is such a high being, or maybe I"m to much of an intelectual for that kind of stuff. But still I believe in one thing the meaning of life is nothing if you want to find it out o outside during the summer just sit and listen don't talk don't think just listen. That's how You'll find it
man cannot provide his own worth. he needs others to tell him his worth, but this is the dilemma. man views his worth not in what he has done, but in what he is doing and what he will do. others only see the external, they only see that he has done and this torments man. he needs to see his worth, but the only worth he can see is not what he wants to see. hell is others. hell is others view of man because it is not what man wants to hear. mans freedom is his downfall.
this song...is just makes turns my mood around competely, almost to the point of tears everytime. I'm so thankful Straylight Run put out this song, to the point of my life probably being save.
As for the meaning, I think people need to kind of stay away from the title so much, the case of "don't judge a book by its cover." Not saying it isn't involved in the meaning of the song, but obviously the words of songs mean more than the titles do.
In a way his statement almost captures the essence of existentialism. As a progression from a nihilistic state it embodies a sense of hope in a meaningless hope. Ultimately it is a denial of the conclusions that so many have drawn. Existentialism is man making his own hope and meaning.
So the question is Does that satisfy or is it just a delusion of something much greater? Something that is actually real and easily grasped.
It is obvious man can not provide his own worth because he is incomplete
It's best that they get kept more hidden, it helps keep them out of the *shudders* mainstream. Keeps them from selling out and keeping the raw feel to it :)
I think the song is about the feeling of being yourself, in high school you don't ever get the chance to be who you are and you need to change becuase of who is around you.
I think this song is talking about how you need to be yourself and when you have no one around and you sing to yourself, you sing what you really like and what is really yourself.
and thing is, it's best to be yourself of course but if you do you live like i do and you feel left out and like you have nothing in common with anyone, like an outsider.
i actually think it's a little broader than that. something like "everybody in the world has their differences". but i think that there's a few experiences that most people go through, such as prom night. maybe the lyrics aren't exactly that, but that's what i got from the video.
on a side note, the piano is beautiful, and i really want to learn it
doesn't the title mean, do what you think is right on prom night? lol. i say this because existentialism is humanism. and humanism is like making decisions based on rationality, right?
This is one of the few songs that I cry every single time I hear it. I was obsessed with this song && listened to it every day for about a month. I love it that much
I love how real and average looking the characters are, but i dont think they chose well enough for some of them. The signing couple was a great idea though.
Oh wow I heard this song my senior year and fell in love with it and didn't hear it much afterwards.. it's been a few years since I last heard it. Man, how could I ever forget this?
i haven't heard this song in two years. i discovered it in 8th grade (4 years ago) and just liked the feeling of it. now the message is better than the feeling almost.
I have been looking for this video for the past 2 years.. My ex-boyfriend and I used to watch it together.. I tried so hard to find this again.. I completely forgot who did this.
I know what the title means! I fell in love with this song my senior year of highschool and I am still loving it now. It's great and also it's fantastic.
john nolan hasnt been in taking back sunday for like 2 abums and they are going on thier 3rd album without him, and fred actually left and now has the color fred and taking back sunday has a new member
It is pretty much a rejection of all established philosophies and institutions. The famous "existence precedes essence" quote (by Jean-Paul Sartre, by the way) means that individuals create the meaning (essence) of their lives, rather than it being created by a supreme being or something like that. And it stresses responsibility and the ability to choose how you make your life, BUT it generally distrusts established institutions (government, religion, etc). So you are half right there :)
So what does being "VERY, VERY anti-mainstream" have to do with telling some random people of their ignorance? (With or without the "pop culture fools" bit) I have a hard time with the concept of dismissing something just because it falls outside of my general sphere e.g. inside the mainstream in your case. This whole concept to me sounds, in fact, very much analogous to a mainstream reaction to typically non-standard ideas.
(not trying to be a jerk, just pointing out the seeming paradox)
I can relate to that...But lately ive been trieng to be alot more openminded then I usually am. I dont judge, but about a year ago I would have agreed wholeheartedly with the pop culture fool thing. I find if you dont sterotype, you'll be enlightened. Especially because sterotyping always has a -backfire- thing going for it. Those "pop culture fools" probably have a sterotype thing for you too though. Best to just avoid sterotypes all together :p Im done rambling now.
so basically the title would be about finding what our path is by ourselves right? like prom night represents and end to one chapter and the beginning of another one...thats how i get it..idk
Something like that. But that's your interpretation. Another key doctrine of existentialism is how things are interpreted differently, and that if that is the case, can there be any one truth?
cool vid. singer's voice sounds very generic though :)

i haven't heard this song in two years. i discovered it in 8th grade (4 years ago) and just liked the feeling of it. now the message is better than the feeling almost.

I have been looking for this video for the past 2 years.. My ex-boyfriend and I used to watch it together.. I tried so hard to find this again.. I completely forgot who did this.
This song gets me every time.

I bet none of you pop culture fools even know what existentialism is.
Metalhead4569 3 years ago
Doesnt it mean something like...We are free, and nothing controls us? Like we arent bound by religion? Or anything like it?
Crossedoutheart 3 years ago
It is pretty much a rejection of all established philosophies and institutions. The famous "existence precedes essence" quote (by Jean-Paul Sartre, by the way) means that individuals create the meaning (essence) of their lives, rather than it being created by a supreme being or something like that. And it stresses responsibility and the ability to choose how you make your life, BUT it generally distrusts established institutions (government, religion, etc). So you are half right there :)

ahh :D I see. Thank you.

No problem. Sorry about the "pop culture fools" bit, I guess that was a bit condescending. But I am VERY, VERY, anti-mainstream.
Metalhead4569 3 years ago
So what does being "VERY, VERY anti-mainstream" have to do with telling some random people of their ignorance? (With or without the "pop culture fools" bit) I have a hard time with the concept of dismissing something just because it falls outside of my general sphere e.g. inside the mainstream in your case. This whole concept to me sounds, in fact, very much analogous to a mainstream reaction to typically non-standard ideas.
(not trying to be a jerk, just pointing out the seeming paradox)

All I meant was that most people are probably listening to this song because it's popular and well-known, and have no clue what the title refers to.
Metalhead4569 3 years ago
I can relate to that...But lately ive been trieng to be alot more openminded then I usually am. I dont judge, but about a year ago I would have agreed wholeheartedly with the pop culture fool thing. I find if you dont sterotype, you'll be enlightened. Especially because sterotyping always has a -backfire- thing going for it. Those "pop culture fools" probably have a sterotype thing for you too though. Best to just avoid sterotypes all together :p Im done rambling now.

That's a good point. I like that.
Metalhead4569 3 years ago
so basically the title would be about finding what our path is by ourselves right? like prom night represents and end to one chapter and the beginning of another one...thats how i get it..idk
ladani67 3 years ago
Something like that. But that's your interpretation. Another key doctrine of existentialism is how things are interpreted differently, and that if that is the case, can there be any one truth?
Friedrich Nietzsche said it the best:
"There are no facts, only interpretations".
