The fact that this is purposefully chopped up bugs me. I'd buy the record and scratch this track up with a pen if I wanted to hear this song this way.
@BrokenChair88 For me, I like a really pretty melody, and then I like to mess it up. That's just how I operate. Like "Interstellar Overdrive", have an awesome tune, and then mess it up, later returning to the tune.
But sometimes it gets pretentious. Oh, great, you threw in a few "bleeps" and fake camera sounds here and there. Who cares?! That's like popping a zit and moping the blood up with a napkin and nailing the napkin to a wall and calling it art. Or better yet, taking "The Persistence of Memory" and drawing stick figures on it and saying "See?! See how great it is? See how...original, and...different it is?" Sure it's original. But it's crap.
@BrokenChair88 Totally different thing you're talking about. I think modernist art style is a scam. It pisses me off too when my English teacher wants to show me a picture of an old toilet, that's apparently a famous piece of art. Psychedelic music is a totally different thing. I already told you, it's not about trying trying to sound different or original.
@CosmosOfBeauty But you see, back to your comparison between this and "Interstellar Overdrive," on "Interstellar Overdrive," it was good because it actually went places, and evolved, and became like a dreamlike sort of thing, because it fades in and out of the song like dreams do. In this case, somebody added in annoying pointless bleeps and film sounds once in awhile. Maybe Portishead knew what they were doing by not doing that.
@BrokenChair88 To put it a different way, how would you feel if someone were playing "Stranger In Paradise," and in order to be original, started unpredictably pounding on the piano every once in awhile so that you can't enjoy the melody, because you're always listening in fear of when the next time they're going to pound on the piano is? This is just like that. "Deep Water" is a nice song. Why try to change it?

I'm drifting in deep waters Alone with my self doubting again I try not to struggle this time For I will weather the storm I gotta remember Don't fight it Even if I Don't like it Somehow turn me around No matter how far I drift Deep waters won't scare me tonight
