When i watch the fast and narrow section, where they drive along a 200ft drop i get a sense of how crazy these guys really are. Circuit-racing really is nothing compared to these conditions. And considering the varying surface conditions makes it even more impressing. Mad respect to every rally-driver out there.
Teams often make compromises depending on how much snow/ice , dry tarmac there is on the stages. One common tyre choice for the Monte Carlo Rally, is a normal tarmac tyre fitted with small tungsten ice studs.
Yeah, the Pirelli Sottozero is the control winter tyre used strictly for the Swedish Rally for all the WRC teams from 2008 onwards. Tyre choices for the Monte Carlo Rally 2004 were different in that the Pirelli P-Zero 235/40 tarmac tyre was fitted with studs specifically for Rally Monte Carlo.
The crews need to make a compromise on tyre choice, as quite often they have to drive 3 or so stages on one set of tyres where the conditions can vary between dry/wet tarmac, ice and snow. I assume the tyres are beginning to lose their grip, and on snow and ice, extra care is needed. You can see how Petter pushes much harder on the dryer sections.

Petters Snowtyres are called Sottozero, dim 145/85.
Each tyre is fitted with 400 studs that are 2cm long, and protrude 7mm out of the rubber.
hehe... not "normal" wintertyres as you can see:)

Are they on the wrong tires? They seem to be going extra slow or careful.
