It is not uncommon for fanatics to make someone's career bigger in death than it ever was in life (if I can paraphrase a Kennedy). In this case, Natalie contributed by her delusional bashing. Lyrics in "Lubbock or Leave it" say maybe they will erect a statue to her like they did Buddy Holly. Later, she goes on record to describe the song as being about "any hypocritical town". The WTF factor is off the charts here. Guess why her father moved out of Lubbock!
WTF! this is screwy, im living in lubbock right now, and i love it here. im isck of all the hate that goes twords this town. people are always tekking us were good for nothin, and then we get 3 chicks who become big and famous, they love thier town then. BAM! they turn on us. screw u dixie chicks, i always liked buddy holly better anyway>
I'm from Dallas and I LOVE THE DIXIE chicks! I actually love them more after that comment. It takes a lot of guts to make a statement like that when your majority audience are conservatives (and you're from Texas!). That takes backbone, that takes guts and it makes me really really proud to be Texan again. We're not all war mongering accept any leader at any price.
Well the Chicks brought back the good sound they used to have, it's a shame a couple bad words about Bush brought them to the bottom of the country charts! If it hadn't been for that, they'd still be as famous today as they always have been. The chicks rock!
@scholion or we're not complete fxcking wxnkers with childish issues and the need for counselling and weapons because the adult manner with which these yankie fxcktards wish to be treated gets thrown back in everyone's face.

A terrible song in every way. Musically unimaginative. (OK, the metering is great due to RHCP drummer Chad Smith). Why so bitter? They need to get over themselves and realize the world doesn't revolve around them.
@gchapman1211 Why does everyone think they are full of themselves? When something happens in an artists life, they write songs, sing songs, paint, etc. It's how a creative soul works. They bleed out on an empty paper or canvas. This song is great. I personally love it.
oh wow this is the first time that i heard this song and i have to say that yes she is singing the truth about lubbock texas and i kow because i live in lubbock texas now and when she said "crucifix skyline" she was not lying ! lol its too funny ........people hate this song but get over it because its just the truth people do try and hide their dirty lil secrets with their hospitality ! it made me wanna haul ass down loop 289! you go girl i love you for that song
When there 1# song died, they tried to give the Red Cross a Million Dollars, why would they try and support the War after what they said to the President.
Here's what happened they saw 10's of Millions of Dollars slipping away and said look we better find away to stop this, what if we give 1 percent of what we earned towards the war, guess what it did not work. Hello day Job!
I lived in Lubbock for a year as an exchange student from England, the only thing there is the university, all the other students seemed to do was drink, i enjoyed the sunshine though and the pretty girl, although they seemed to have no interest in me, i was foreign, i don't think they knew what to make of me :)
Hypocrites can never admit to being hypocrites. If they did, they wouldn't be hypocrites! This song is just brilliant in every respect, right down to the banjo cameo. Big Love, Chicks! I'm buying everything you sell me
where are ya'll getting all of this bible thumping, hypocrite stuff if you dont live in lubbock (even if you used to ) you have absolutely NO right to say all of this. Oh and by the way, the dixe chicks are stupid idiots for thing that their little temper tantrum would land them a spot in any award shows. Instead it landed them right out of existence, and by the way natalie, I'd bet my life that you don't get a statue now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
actually their album debuted number one on both country and pop charts and they won every grammy that they were nominated for(that's five). did i mention that Elvis only won 3 in his entire career?
well; i personally DOlive in lubbock and ive lived in lubbock for my entire life; i believe every single word of this song is true. if your too ignorant to see that; it's not my problem. we are rumored *and this is most likely true* to have more churches per capita that any other city in the US. we are also right in the middle of the bible belt. the dixie chicks spoke their mind and because there from such close minded ignorant places people turned against them.
I was in Alabama in '05 and it was one Baptist Church after another. We were in the Buckle of the Bible Belt. I must admit, I didn't know much about the Dixie Chicks other than Natalie Maines "got on my nerves" -But, I've had a change of heart.
They didn't deserve any of that. But, like I said the Dixie Chicks redefined Bad Ass!
The whole point of the bible thumping comments have to do with the people in Texas (and yes I'm a Texan) thinking they're so pious and good christians and then turning around and throwing the first stone (judgement) when it came to Marty's outspoken opinions. I've been to Lubbock many times and it isn't much different in the holier than thou bible thumping mentality than the rest of Texas small/medium towns. I doubt Natalie cares about a statue~
It's not dissing your hometown - it's dissing a certain group of hypocrits that reside in it - as well as in America. Don't take it personally - especially since the Chicks don't know you...
acting...I lived in Lubbock for six years and I don't find anything in this song dissing anything...just bringing certain things to light..c'mon..until recently dry county but drive to the "strip" to get yer booze which is owned by certain churchmen....certain bad behavior by frats and sors...ignored cause "they do so much for the city"..please. They did a song about Lubbock as she saw it then..get over it and open your eyes.
"The entire country may disagree with me, but I dont understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why?" per Natalie Maines.
Three months earlier, at the Grammys, Joan Baez used these very words to introduce and defend Natalie.
Seems she forgot to correct Joan Baez about "this land is your land" on Grammy night. ROFL.
The lesson is; You can take the girl out of the trailer, but you can't take the trailer out of the girl.
Haha. I grew up in Lubbock. After moving away for four years, I moved back. I left again after 10 months. I just couldn't live there. It's a nice place to visit but I don't understand how anyone can leave there. I'm glad I got out.
I agree with NayRoc1. Lubbock is full of racists and bible thumpers. I've heard there are more churches per capita in Lubbock than any city in the US. I could believe that. The people in Lubbock are too closed-minded and uncultured, generally speaking. While some people in Lubbock are good people, they are few and far between.
Great song. It's funny how Lubbock was happy to claim Buddy Holly as one of their own after he died. They are making money off his name when they condemned him when he was alive. Hypocrites. Way to go Nat.
As they might say in Lubbock, amen. Was there for six and a half years...way too liberal thinking for the city so I left, but I do miss the University.
So here's a question for you. While I made sense of most of the sons and I LOVE it, I was wondering whether the whole How Will I Ever Get To Heaven Line was autobiographical with a view to Nat not being fit to get to heaven anymore after she allegedly screwed up so bad??? I don't meet you average Republican's bible huggin' hypocrite standards anymore so I'm bad is that what they meant by that? Just let me know;)
@dripsey3 Although I'm a Lubbock native and I love the Dixie Chicks, I think the comparison is a bit unfair. Did Natalie spearhead an entire genre of music? No. Is she indirectly responsible for one of the biggest rock bands in history (like Buddy Holly and the Beatles?). No. Buddy Holly is a legend in his own right. I've been to the Buddy Holly Center, and their commitment to that legacy is very sincere, even if the city didn't understand rock 'n roll when Buddy helped CREATE it.

Why do so many Americans hate people who criticize society?
Perhaps Europeans have a better understanding of issues like freedom of speech after what we experienced last century.

Yes, and it is in the Bible (that it makes people to go to Hell no matter what they do).
If ever there'd be a "God" (any), and would be a world-creator, then it would be evil, mad or ignorant.
