Saw this get released, fantastic movie. a french producer/ director I met tried to get paramount to release the 3hours version, so much ended up on cutting room floor. too bad, great great story of ancient good and evil and that which is in mankind.
@cosmicdingo Rather looks like one, though he strikes me as more flesh and blood than that. You get to see him forming from a floating nervous system to flesh.
The movie is great, really, but I think with this cast it was made ten years too early. I really adore all three of them, Byrne, Prochnow and McKellen, but I would say, Byrne and McKellen were a bit too young to play this.
Ten years later and the whole cast would have made such a magnificent show, that it surely would have become the blockbuster it deserved to become.
Love the part, where Byrne shrieks like a girl. Shows the cowardish rat inside his character really subtle.
I remember this movie and i just got it on an old vhs tape. Paramount better step up their game and release this on a dvd is right> i was 10 years old when i first watched it.
true, but it was supposed to be pretty intense type oc scene, I mean obviously anyoone else would have run their asses out of there after seeing their men killed in a flash like that, but again its done for the movie.
don't know about the cross and asking Jesus's help, its just for show
I think the whole "Jesus protect me" was an attempt to show hypocracy from the Nazi officer (Byrne). The German officer (Prochnow) grabbed it, because he had faith in it. BTW, he was the only German not killed by Molasar. Also, Molasar could have appeared, just as the SS officer turned around. The whole scene revolves around what was said earlier, when Prochnow said, "What if what is killing us is like you?" Molasar was having some fun with Byrne's character.
That's right, most SS tended to be either Lutheran or atheist. So him grabbing it for protection was a doomed attempt. He should of tried emptying his Hi-Power into Molasar, probably would of had more effect.
@WatchRyder Saying that "most SS tended to be Lutheran" is a lot like saying "Hitler was Roman Catholic, because he was baptised as one." The only "religion" you can really associate with Nazis is probably more accurately described as some sort of neo-Teutonic paganism. While some of them certainly seemed to believe in some sort of religiosity, it hardly resembles anything most organized religions practice today.
Probably was distracted by all of the smoke and debris. More smoke in there than an '80's heavy metal music video. And Molasar does sorta blend in to the generally dark gray surroundings. Very atmospheric scene in all, love that eerie wind in the background.
Dude, this movie had me mesmerized the first time I saw it. I am so glad that its on youtube now.
But this scene right here, is absolutely mind -blowing, the color, the background, the music, the eerieness of the scene, the actors, ( Gabriel Byrne is amazing ) and of course the music by Tangerine Dream is just fucking kick ass awesome!!!
There are rumors that there was (or hopefully is) a version of the movie that's 3 to 4 hours long, and was the original European release. Does anyone know if this is available online? DiVx, torrent, whatever -- as long as I can watch it.
In my opinion the most legendary unique esoteric movie soundtrack from the 80's to a film that should be so revered. The scores were so well amalgamated to the film and the film itself seems so genius in its simplicity of mystique and mystery. When I watched this for the first time I wished I didn't so that I could see it again unknowing to the film's outcome but definitely a film that I can't stop watching. A must to release on DVD. Certainly an
Yea man, I mean the Music that Tangerine Dream did for this movie is just mind-blowing, I mean the dark tone of the movie, the color of the scenes, its so dreamy like and eerie at the same time, I mean its just a great movie.
I really wish they would release it on DVD. Does anyone know of they are going to? I thought they were supposed to release it in June 2008 for a 25th anniversary. But that never happened
STUNNING A MUST 4 ANYONE WHO LOVES CINEMA!This scene still sh**s me up when I see it!!!
"Where am I from. I am from u." Wow it really should get re'released! They don't have anything that matches up 2 this films simplicity & stunning cinema photography. Ever so effective... unlike most movies of 2day.

Yes, Big Daddy Molasar is the greatest movie monster ever! Now we need the bit that preceded this, Jurgen Prochnow verbally ripping Byrne a new one over the tactics of the SS! Put this movie on DVD/Blu Ray Paramount!
My wifey just told me Dubya's outta Crawford and back in Dallas so we'll have to flip the script. Maybe Molasar can get two for tyhe price of one: Dubya and J.R. Ewing....
I love this movie, despite all it's flaws. I'd love honestly to see it redone in a more complete version, although I'm not sure anyone could capture the mood as well as Mann did.
If there is a remake I'm hoping that a Blu-ray version might have the original film tacked to the program. Blu-ray has so much HD capacity over DVD that I hope that ANY remake would add the original film(s) for a nominal fee to the original releasers.

How the hell could Gabriel Byrne just stumble into Molasar like that? He stands out like a god damn pink elephant in the middle of Times Square.

I would have torn myself a new asshole running out of there so quickly.

something with separate existence. As illustrated here, all of us "you."
