I have a Soares'y Mandocello in the Gainesville Florida craigslist , but after hearing how Mike plays his Mandocello, I am having second thoughts about letting it go, Mike, you take the life of the strings to a new level with your playing, fantastic,
@7Jubal7 Mandocellos can be very expensive but if you look around, you can find something "affordable". What's affordable for one might not be for another. You can expect to pay between $400 and $1000 for starters. More if the instrument isn't a brand name (meaning made by a builder/luthier)
@daddariostrings I want you to show me where these $400 brand name mandocellos are. I have not seen a mandocello with a brand name on it less than 1500 on a good day. I do not believe you and I henceforth call you a liar.
@daddariostrings After looking and researching for months, the least expensive mandocello I found (that was an actual mandocello and not a converted tenor guit.) was the Weber Tamarack that weighed in @$1800. Gibsons started well into the $2500 range. This was several years ago, unfortunately, Weber seems to have discontinued making the tamarack in mandocello. They do however make mandocellos in other models that are quite nice!
@thegladone There is the Hyalite that starts at $1850 or so and Elderly instruments in Lansing still has 1 Tamarack. A luthier in Maryland name Walt Kuhlman will make a barebones A for $950 +shipping and case. Thats the best you can do though that I can see. There are these really shit ones on Ebay for $300, but I mean like the sides and top don't line up right.
Awesome playing and cool instrument but I can't help but feel such an instrument would sound more cello like if fully electric. As evil as that is to say :D
Wow! I'd love to play one of these, plugged in! I'm tuning my electric guitar in 5ths, so a Mandocello w/out the doublet strings (like the Mandobass that Gibson made in the early 20th C.). Watching this fine musician, I can see I still have a great deal to learn!
I believe that the beautiful and dark piece is and excellent rendition of "Wayfaring Stranger." (As he says at the very end) but it is also nearly "Summertime".
Masterfully played and of great interest due to the unusual nature of the mandocello, I've been playing guitar for 40 years, but never heard of this instrument. I like the low, musky tone. Thanks for posting.
why do cameramen always zoom in on the picking hand? It's true that the right hand is key but that's not why. They don't know that. Seeing the right hand doesn't show you as much as watching the left hand. *rant*
It would be nice if people went back to the music parlor days and played after dinner. People seem to have lost themselves without the simpler things in life. Music is about as raw as it gets. Thumbs up Marshall.
The mandocello is a wonderful instrument and Mike Marshall is an amazing player. Unfortunately mandocellos tend to be very expensive, but it is possible to convert an archtop acoustic guitar (which I have done) and get excellent results.
@mandoprince1 how did you deal wih the problem of a new string configuration, i.e. having courses instead of single strings? i guess you had to cut a new nut and add a new headstock?
@heybuddyheybuddy New nut yes, but the original headstock was fine with four new holes added to fit mandolin tuners. The tailpeice is also replaced by a mandolin unit.
I tried unsuccessfully to include a link to a thread on Mandolin Cafe, about this instrument, but if you go onto the Mandolin Cafe forum and do a search for Renforth K-9, then you should find it :-)
Holy cow your Bach cello suite rendition was awesome. Could someone explain the importance of having two strings for each pitch though? I don't get it.
@Barfopotamus the strings are tuned to the same note, but an octave apart I think. Probably just a matter of having a beautiful, full sounding instrument.
i believe the original intent was to create a louder sound. certain bi-products of this such as the chorus effect (that is two pitches that are just almost tuned the same and create that certain flavor that double coursed instruments have. its the same principle that make almost every choir sound good when they are singing together.)
Never heard of this guy before 5 minutes ago. I like him. He is funny and passionate and he plays damn fine mandocello. In 1970 is was asked by Joel Lish, conductor of the L.A. Mandolin Orchestra, to play mandobass in the orchestra. Problem was, I couldn't read and I couldn't afford a kazoo, much less a mandocello.
this guy is telling the truth, i wish people still just got together after eating or work and just played there instruments, i want either one of these or an octave mandolin, I LOVE FOLK INSTRUMENTS!
where can you get one? id love to be able to play one but they all seem to cost in the thouands. where could one buy one for like 500? i mean these cant be much more to make than a normal acoustic guitar right?
i got my mandolin for 400 and my basses were 600 and 800. so is there really no way to get one of these guys for around that price?
@henry12350 Well its not that simple unfortunately. when i first saw the mandocello i wanted one so bad it made me crazy. Im a luthier now so im just gonna make one just for me. Its so cheap to make it by hand its just hard work and skill. :P
To all concerned, Marshall's mandocello is a sort-of Gibson K4 clone built by John Monteleone (prior to 1985 ?) when Monteleone was building mandolins. I believe he is focused on guitars these days. I'm basing my opinion on the first Marshall album I bought (@ 1990 --- Gator Strut) .
Ok, so I've been totally ignorant all these years but now I finally realize how Rick Nielsen gets the awesome deep octaved sound in the song Mandocello. Always thought it was a detuned 12 string. Very cool!

higher. the cello's C would be the third fret on the A string of a guitar.

The mandola's low C would be the 3rd fret on the 5th string of a guitar. The mandocello is a whole octave below that.
