  • Love this

  • I've seen Mike play this thing in performance. Very cool show

  • wow what you played around 5:40 is probably the best thing I've ever heard on a stringed instrument! :O I would do anything to get a mandocello!

  • I have a Soares'y Mandocello in the Gainesville Florida craigslist , but after hearing how Mike plays his Mandocello, I am having second thoughts about letting it go, Mike, you take the life of the strings to a new level with your playing, fantastic,

  • Instrument sounds amazing.

  • Where can I get one of these, and whats the cheapest I should expect to pay for one?

  • @7Jubal7 Mandocellos can be very expensive but if you look around, you can find something "affordable". What's affordable for one might not be for another. You can expect to pay between $400 and $1000 for starters. More if the instrument isn't a brand name (meaning made by a builder/luthier)

  • @daddariostrings The $400 to $1000 fits my budget perfectly. What brands are these?

  • @daddariostrings I want you to show me where these $400 brand name mandocellos are. I have not seen a mandocello with a brand name on it less than 1500 on a good day. I do not believe you and I henceforth call you a liar.

  • @daddariostrings After looking and researching for months, the least expensive mandocello I found (that was an actual mandocello and not a converted tenor guit.) was the Weber Tamarack that weighed in @$1800. Gibsons started well into the $2500 range. This was several years ago, unfortunately, Weber seems to have discontinued making the tamarack in mandocello. They do however make mandocellos in other models that are quite nice!

  • @thegladone There is the Hyalite that starts at $1850 or so and Elderly instruments in Lansing still has 1 Tamarack. A luthier in Maryland name Walt Kuhlman will make a barebones A for $950 +shipping and case. Thats the best you can do though that I can see. There are these really shit ones on Ebay for $300, but I mean like the sides and top don't line up right.

  • @RibakTB OOPS! Nope the Hyalite starts at $2599, my bad!

  • What was the very last thing he said?

  • @Natedogdiicky I tink he says "wayfaring stranger", a traditional song, inspiration for what he just played

  • 240p we meet again...

  • Awesome playing and cool instrument but I can't help but feel such an instrument would sound more cello like if fully electric. As evil as that is to say :D

  • @SuperBenzid That is truly quite evil. Something more evil? Many gibson mandocellos were converted to guitars. GUITARS.

  • Wow! I'd love to play one of these, plugged in! I'm tuning my electric guitar in 5ths, so a Mandocello w/out the doublet strings (like the Mandobass that Gibson made in the early 20th C.). Watching this fine musician, I can see I still have a great deal to learn!

  • Gator Strut is legendary.

  • this guy is the coolest.

  • I already love the mandolin and have been interested in the cello as well.. obvious connection!

  • 4 note chords take over the world, i agree

  • Yeah the cheese is definitely off the cracker

  • I don't know about twice as cool as the 'cello, but still really cool =) And yes, WOO MONTANA!!!

  • I believe that the beautiful and dark piece is and excellent rendition of "Wayfaring Stranger." (As he says at the very end) but it is also nearly "Summertime".

  • WOO! MONTANA!

  • Is the piece he starts playing around 6:30 something with a name? It's beautiful and dark, and I love it!

  • He's a blast to play with, take seminars from, and watch live. If you get the chance, take it!

  • Masterfully played and of great interest due to the unusual nature of the mandocello, I've been playing guitar for 40 years, but never heard of this instrument. I like the low, musky tone. Thanks for posting.

  • i love this video :)

  • Is fingering difficult due to its long scale?

  • @VadiaRotor

No, you just have to talk sweet to her first.

  • @VadiaRotor lol fingering.... i wouldnt think it would be much different to a guitar or the cello

  • why do cameramen always zoom in on the picking hand? It's true that the right hand is key but that's not why. They don't know that. Seeing the right hand doesn't show you as much as watching the left hand. *rant*

  • @q1com i think they're zooming in on the instrument itself rather than the hand

  • Awesome! I play Mandolin and would love to get my fingers around one of those!!!

  • Great vid! I just got myself a sweet Weber Octo Mandolin and Mandocello of some kind is next on the list. I love the deep dark tone.

  • It would be nice if people went back to the music parlor days and played after dinner. People seem to have lost themselves without the simpler things in life. Music is about as raw as it gets. Thumbs up Marshall.

  • I want this.

  • This video makes me love this instrument, and I enjoy his performance of the Bach G major cello Prelude even more than the way most cellists play it!

  • This video makes me love this instrument, and I enjoy his performance of the Bach G major cello Prelude even more than the way most cellists play it!

  • The mandocello is a wonderful instrument and Mike Marshall is an amazing player. Unfortunately mandocellos tend to be very expensive, but it is possible to convert an archtop acoustic guitar (which I have done) and get excellent results.

  • @mandoprince1 how did you deal wih the problem of a new string configuration, i.e. having courses instead of single strings? i guess you had to cut a new nut and add a new headstock?

  • @heybuddyheybuddy New nut yes, but the original headstock was fine with four new holes added to fit mandolin tuners. The tailpeice is also replaced by a mandolin unit.

I tried unsuccessfully to include a link to a thread on Mandolin Cafe, about this instrument, but if you go onto the Mandolin Cafe forum and do a search for Renforth K-9, then you should find it :-)

  • @mandoprince1 cool, thanks! might give it a try one day!

  • crazy

  • This is awesome! I've played the cello for eight years and now i really want one of these

  • Holy cow your Bach cello suite rendition was awesome. Could someone explain the importance of having two strings for each pitch though? I don't get it.

  • @Barfopotamus the strings are tuned to the same note, but an octave apart I think. Probably just a matter of having a beautiful, full sounding instrument.

  • @Barfopotamus The strings are double coursed (have the same tuning). It gives it a richer sound.

  • @Barfopotamus

i believe the original intent was to create a louder sound. certain bi-products of this such as the chorus effect (that is two pitches that are just almost tuned the same and create that certain flavor that double coursed instruments have. its the same principle that make almost every choir sound good when they are singing together.)

  • I just cried a bit.

  • best part at 5:32

  • Cool instrument, great player

  • Never heard of this guy before 5 minutes ago. I like him. He is funny and passionate and he plays damn fine mandocello. In 1970 is was asked by Joel Lish, conductor of the L.A. Mandolin Orchestra, to play mandobass in the orchestra. Problem was, I couldn't read and I couldn't afford a kazoo, much less a mandocello.

  • beautiful

  • this guy is telling the truth, i wish people still just got together after eating or work and just played there instruments, i want either one of these or an octave mandolin, I LOVE FOLK INSTRUMENTS!

  • @n0possibility hey I still do that lol

  • Welp

  • This would be awsome for practicing my cello anywhere. Love the Bach btw

  • Mandolin first, then I will save up for a mandocello!

    Excellent video, lovely playing!

  • It's Toby from the Office!

  • sounds so cool. i want to play one

  • sounds so cool.

  • heard of it but never seen it or heard it played. Cool instrument!

  • great

  • This is amazing. Very insightful, and very interesting. I love this instrument.

  • where can you get one? id love to be able to play one but they all seem to cost in the thouands. where could one buy one for like 500? i mean these cant be much more to make than a normal acoustic guitar right?

i got my mandolin for 400 and my basses were 600 and 800. so is there really no way to get one of these guys for around that price?

  • @henry12350 Same here, I want to play one, but I'm not definitely not willing to fork over much more than $500.

  • @henry12350 Well its not that simple unfortunately. when i first saw the mandocello i wanted one so bad it made me crazy. Im a luthier now so im just gonna make one just for me. Its so cheap to make it by hand its just hard work and skill. :P

  • @henry12350

the cheapest i could find was about $900. It is definitely worth the money considering it will last for as long as you take care of it :P

  • is that a monteleone?

  • At 5:33 he's playing the intro to his composition Gator Strut from the album of the same name.

  • BACH!!!

  • Dose anyone know the name of the groove he plays at 5:33? I'm pretty sure I heard it on Pandora the other day.

  • Get the cheese back on the cracker, jerk.

  • @ifrit26 lol wtf

  • around 7:00 is that wayfaring stranger?

  • Comment removed

  • I Think The Cheese is finally off the Cracker

  • @ 5:30, holy cow that right there really makes me want one

  • I knew him in1980s.He is a malti instrumentarist.This mandocello is very good,isn't it?

  • its john ...

  • its john ..

  • hes my cousin .. wtg mike

  • To DD2146

I can not find the nut size for the Gibson K4. HOWEVER, I learn that the nut size for the oval K1 is 1.5 inches.

  • This must be music from the heavens, or the most amazing musician!

  • awsome son

  • To all concerned, Marshall's mandocello is a sort-of Gibson K4 clone built by John Monteleone (prior to 1985 ?) when Monteleone was building mandolins. I believe he is focused on guitars these days. I'm basing my opinion on the first Marshall album I bought (@ 1990 --- Gator Strut) .

  • @wb3ebb Happen to know what the size of the nut was on those old K4's?

  • Comment removed

  • This is a Gibson K-4 unless I'm mistaken. Either that or a good replica of one. Beautiful instrument and amazing sound.

  • @Fivernz

    It's a Monteleone

  • 1:50. beautiful :')

  • i would love to own one of these!! haha i play a mandolin and this is just amazing!!!

  • i would point out the wrong notes in the prelude, if this guy didnt kick my ass up and down as a musician

  • Funny guy..!

  • 6:26 OMG. I want a Mandocello, NOW!

  • mandoncello cool

  • Anyone know the maker of that particular mandocello?

  • Wtf, this guy is fucking awesome and seems like a cool as guy!

  • -pure animal wanting-

  • I need to get that instrument!!!

  • i saw him live at deerfield and he was amazing

  • is that last song the wayfaring stranger?

  • It's called Gator Strut. Yes, it rocks.

  • @mondorob & Dimmy - Not correct. The low C on the mandocello is 5 steps below the low E on a guitar.

  • Is this lower string ''C'' of the Mandocello, lower, or higher then a E from a guitar??

  • Lower

  • Lower...

  • The mandola's low C would be the 3rd fret on the 5th string of a guitar. The mandocello is a whole octave below that.

  • what song is that at 5:32

  • gator strut

  • Comment removed

  • Ok, so I've been totally ignorant all these years but now I finally realize how Rick Nielsen gets the awesome deep octaved sound in the song Mandocello. Always thought it was a detuned 12 string. Very cool!

  • lol that is same reason I came here. After listening to that live version with Billy Corgan.

  • he jams

  • omg,what a fucikng great instrument!

  • i think the cheese is finally off the cracker

  • this confuses me but i think i agree

  • One of the very best… inspiring. Thanks, Mike!

  • I think I was born with that instrument in my ears... So rich !

  • Such a wicked player.

  • Great video! Thanks for sharing.

  • i've so got to buy one

  • Beyond sweet...I agree with the other poster...I bet this guy could make me want to try to learn to play anything. He definately sold me on a mando-lo.

  • I've been a Marshall fan since he was a teen, and he's STILL a monster picker! Dude can play just about anything with strings.

Also, I've wanted a mandocello since the first time I heard one.

  • Cool guy, awesome instrument

  • I don't do drugs cuz I'm not a dumb dumb, sorry. And, your mum thought he was cool... last night.

  • Wow!

  • I've played both guitar and cello now for around 14 years and until now didn't know about the MANDOCELLO. what an amazing instrument.

  • same, i play cello, and a little guitar.

I also play mandocello, its like a cross between the two

  • I think I'd prefer it without a pick. Fingers sound so much better.

  • Mandolin family instruments played with fingers sounds very thin and hurts your fingers, too.

It's really meant to be used with a pick.

If you want a softer sound you can use a felt pick.

  • you do too many mushrooms

  • Dude, I soo want one of those now. Start groovin with my mandolin buddy, make some awesome tunes.=)

    He's really good, too

  • He is good. I like him with edgar meyer on uncommon ritual.
