I agree wholeheartedly. The final movement gets all the attention, of course, but this is truly sublime. I think one has to be in a certain state of mind and give it one's undivided attention. Any piece of art so deep requires a tremendous emotional investment, but oh, the payoff. So profound, so melodious, so Russian!
Das phantastische Largo der großen 5. Sinfonie des größten Sinfonikers des 20. Jahrhunderts.
when i went to see this (it was quite a while ago, so pardon me if some of it is a bit... off)
in the booklet they explained he was forced to write this for Stalin and during that time anything written for Stalin had to be perfect or they would be killed, so he wrote about the rise of Stalin, and the power of his ruling, and in the last movement its about Stalins death and how freedom is back. (i believe Stalin died during the making of this)
The last movement has nothing to do with the death of Stalin. Stalin died in 1953, and the 5th symphony was written in the late 1930s. (Not to mention that to say "freedom is back" after the death of Stalin is a huge misinterpretation of the Thaw.) Regardless, it's a fantastic piece of music!
One of the better performances of this piece.
It defines loneliness and despair yet at the end hope.

Thank you Dmitry Shostakovich for putting me in a different and better place everytime when I'm listening to your orchestral works.

It's perhaps the best video from the NHK available on youtube. Stefan Sanderling is the true son of his father!

this personally is my favorite one that Shostakovitch wrote. I don't see how it is Communist or like Stalin.
