In this episode, not very long into it, Dick mentions some kind of Hopalong Cassidy sequel or something after which Mitchum says that in it he had a heavy, deep bass baritone voice and a beard that cut off much of his face making him look like Mickey Mouse. The movie, as Dick says it, was "Cassidy's Third" from what I could make out. Did I hear that movie title correctly?
he was married since he was 16 and you're saying he's not allowed to flip his wife the bird? It gets a rise out of people, it makes them laugh, but it doesn't mean he's serious about it. Come on, it's Robert Fucking Mitchum. If you think he or his wife gives 2 fucks about the bird then you are insane. Also, he started with his pointer finger, then switched. Not saying that he did flip her the bird, just saying that it wouldn't have mattered either way.
Wow.....So there was an era when interviewers were sincere, respectful and intelligent, and interviewees drank booze throughout the show. Meanwhile, 40 years later you could NEVER get a show like Dick Cavett's or Johnny Carson's on the air, but you can fill a whole evening with grisly murders, fast-action over-stimulating camera shots, and below-average people trying way too hard to be interesting for attention and money.
I could never respect anyone who works in the TV industry today.
I think he was giving Cavett the finger! There's a wire service photo of him being given a star on Hollywood Blvd. or wherever they do that, and he's pointing to the star with his middle finger. He kind of flipped the bird to the Universe, overall. Love him!
Robert Mitchum never struck me as the type to do something passive-aggressive like surreptitiously flipping the bird; I think he'd be more inclined to just straight-up say something...though I think he had more class than to act on such a supposed urge. Sadly, they don't make them like Robert Mitchum anymore.
@mharrin5507 I would agree with you on that. He was not the typical Hollywood type. He was his own man and did not care what people thought or said about him.
Seeing this makes me realise how weak the male stars in our culture are. Mitchum was a major league pot smoker, boozer, loved to fuck, loved to lay shit down, loved... calipso music! He recorded and released two calipso albums in the early 60s! He was a fun guy. But when his son died...
haha i used to have a manager who would always point with his middle finger when he was explaining things to me. i sometimes wondered if he was giving me the finger
@IvoryTears1 I think he was actually giving Cavett, the columnist referred to, and perhaps the whole muckraking media the finger -- I do think he realized what he was doing, but the wife was not the target.
I love this interview. I used to be up on YouTube in its entirety. If you have the rest of it please put it up. I especially love - and I mean LMAO every time I hear it - love the "Kirk" story he tells about running amok in Ireland when out drinking with Richard Harris.
"And do they leave with them?" - A riot.
I feel pity for the people who watch TV today. There is zero chance they would see anything as good as this, which I remember fondly.

Love how he says"They come to me with their troubles" with that sly smile on his face, lol.
And I dont think he was giving his wife the finger, he was just pushing his glasses on to his face.
Probably.

... yes, those glasses are cool, I agree. Back in the 70's (and 80's too), glasses with big lenses and horn rims were the rage.
