For me (just my own subjective opinion) there are only two performances of this emotional aria - regardless of it being a tribute to the shade of a tree :-) - that are worth listening to. This wonderful performance of Jussi. And the performance of the late Caruso. Both of them empathetic geniouses.
What a sound! This recording demonstrates that Björling had a gorgeous and seamless tone from the bottom to the top of his register. What incredible technique. He combined technical perfection with a haunting tone quality that brought tears to the eyes of his listeners. This is his centennial year, with celebrations planned in both the U.S. and Sweden.
Absolutely the best interpretation I heard. His voice flows with a richness and intense feeling. Believe the microphone was too close to the piano. There should have been a symphony orchestra accompanying him
i think the piano part is "over-arranged" meaning it just has too many notes making it sound kinda clunky, clangy and crunchy. this was recorded before the baroque revival and people weren't as interested in the authenticity of a baroque sound. even though it sounds a little unweildy it does bring out some unexpected pleasant moments too, i find:)
My God...

Bjorling's singing is a "joy forever."

Breathtaking. His low register is as gorgeous as the rest, and this aria shows he didn't depend solely on showy high notes to make superb music.

Beautiful music sung more expressively and with greater flow than anyone I've ever heard.

No one should sing Ombra since Jussi.

How can a singer always be so beautiful, so inspired? And thank you for the photos, too.

My God! Unreal. I miss him to this day, and I was living when he was singing. No one like Jussi. Thank you for posting.
