When I was a kid, before going to school, I tried putting my shoes on which had been sitting next to the wood pile outside overnight. My foot wouldn't go inside the shoe, it felt like something big. I tipped the shoe over to have a giant Weta drop out. It hit the floor with a THUD!, and I ran like a sissy!!
bout a month back i was at an army cadet camp and i woke up, put my boots shirt pants and all that on and when i reached for my vest thre was one of these things on it
They are so disgusting... I once had one on my shirt which wouldn't let go. It just harpooned itself into the fabric. I tried everything but in the end I had to take my shirt off.
Honestly they're worse than spiders! I shouldn't watch that movie...
My brothers and I used to climb the neighbors Pine trees all the time. It wasn't uncommon to have a few of these guys falling of branches above and landing on us.
Ha! what was that movie? I haven't seen or heard of that.
I found one of these one morning, picked it up and put it in my palm thinking it was dead. Turned out it was still alive, just slow moving because it was cold. So I don't hesitate picking them up anymore.
They're harmless and 99% of the time they don't bite if you pick them up. If they're gonna bite they raise their hind legs in the air.
That's a cool weta clip. Have a look at the ones I make from copper which you will also find in the Warkworth Craft Gallery. I'm still not brave enough to pick up a real one.
Very nasty looking wee beasts and the closer you get the nastier they look and act. Quite fearless insects and will take on any sized threat. As the common Weta is often found among decaying leaves most Kiwi gardners have their own little horror stories and most fear them with passion. I did a video a few days ago featuring a smallish one.
whats that first video

Glad we don't get them here in Australia, then. Well, to my knowledge anyway.
Yuck.
