i would like to apologise to youtube. in the past, i have been judgemental. but, in all honesty, youtube has created such a huge communicative device(good and bad), and it has given so much information. i will not take lightly the amount of information that has to be had through youtube. it's awesome.

Penn talks about working on the TV show, the Vegas act, and writing columns to support his family and that's great, but I'm not sure "support" is the right word. If most people had what he makes in a single year, they could retire for good. All I mean is that I'm not sure that accumulating great wealth is the same as supporting your family. Those who think "THIS" (Youtube) is a place for only one specific type of person is really clueless as to how the concept of entertainment works or even how the internet works. The point of things such as the internet and any video website where the general population can upload is to give everyone the opportunity to have a voice - be it Joe Smith who uploads at the apple store and is hopeless or even Bill Gates or Emperor Bush.
The problem is that mainstream commercial bollocks has an unfair advantage: It already has itself plugged directly into the collective subconscious. Now it is infecting YouTube, and bringing its corporate bullshit with it.

It took over five minutes for him to say 3 seconds of information: I don't read the hate mail. The same goes for his other videos. He states a premise and instead of giving more information or details, he restates and restates and restates and restates the premise until the video is done. Good premises, no depth. Also lose the Land of the Giants camera angle and stop tugging at your beard. If the beard bothers you that much shave it off and save the viewers from having to stare up at it.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I have 131 subscriptions and only 2-3 are to people who are already famous or businesses. Even if the rich and famous were to flock to youtube it would make no difference. I already watch youtube instead of them in the first place. If I pass up prime time tv for youtube, then I doubt putting prime time on youtube will make it anymore desirable.

Youtube doesn't give a shit who Broadcasts what on their channel, just as long as they don't violate their policy and terms of use. Youtube is a company, thus only cares about the money they make in advertising.

If most people had what he makes in a single year, they could retire for good. All I mean is that I'm not sure that accumulating great wealth is the same as supporting your family. I'd dare to say the internet is one of the truest examples of a free market of ideas. Which means you get to see just how stupid (or choose whatever word makes you most comfortable here) or crazy or smart or brilliant people can be.

I'm glad that you're on YouTube Penn. I followed your videos on crackle, then bebo, and finally on here. Even though I don't always agree with what you say, I always do respect your opinion, and love to watch your videos. They make me think on a regular basis. Anyway I like that you're here now, because that means all my online video subscriptions are in the one place now.

I'm 'that guy'. N o 9ff4ns3, but when YouTube chose 'broadcast yourself' as it's motto, did u think they had deep pocketed professional production companies in mind? Is it's appeal to u as a place to see yet more TV reruns? No, it offered the promise (illusion, I should say) of a potential democritization of media. I think Penn's cool as hell, & I welcome him, but when I saw someone say to him 'your what YT was made for!' I felt I had to object; he's NOT what it was made for.

Tell me exactly, why is that? Is it because that he's a big time show-guy who hosts numerous kick-ass shows?

*The answer to your 1st question is YES.
*The answer to your 2nd question is NO.
*It's not about what the banner should be, it's about what it is. 'Broadcast Yourself', ISTM, is clearly directed at the unwashed masses, people who otherwise would not be broadcast; not to people with TV shows & networks looking to expand into new media. This is at least the romantic image (aka gimmick) that 'sold' YouTube to said masses.
I've no idea why you mention Avril Lavigne & Hip-hop videos.

The clear reality is.. Youtube is not that way at all. I mentioned Avril and Hip-hop videos since those videos are the most viewed videos on YouTube.
That shows how much commercialism is existent here. This is the place not just for the "unwashed masses", it's for EVERYONE.
Yeah, that includes Penn. Cause' SURPRISE he has opinions as well! And the -freedom- to express them, through this medium.

Obviously, YT's preference is for whomever can generate the most revenue, be they famous or obscure. But it was originally conceived as and is still promoted as a democracized, 'anyone can broadcast' new media platform. I work in technology, I am well aware of the forecest trends in media; in 10 years or less there likely will be no offline entertainment. So it's all coming online, if not necessarily YT. We're at a stage of pretty radical transformation of media paradigms right now... (1 more!)

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I have 131 subscriptions and only 2-3 are to people who are already famous or businesses. Even if the rich and famous were to flock to youtube it would make no difference. I already watch youtube instead of them in the first place. If I pass up prime time tv for youtube, then I doubt putting prime time on youtube will make it anymore desirable.

Youtube doesn't give a shit who Broadcasts what on their channel, just as long as they don't violate their policy and terms of use. Youtube is a company, thus only cares about the money they make in advertising.
The thing is-- YouTube, IS made for people like Penn -and- the obscure people. In fact, Penn is likely even more welcome given his already high popularity. More views = more money from advertising.

Now you're just talking out of your ass, Bill. Sure it may promote itself that way, but the clear reality is that it is not that way at all.
The most watched videos are commercial and corporate videos, like recording companies. They get a hell of a lot more views than YouTube's alleged demographic of "little people".
