J Dilla did not produce Bobby Caldwell's original song. Dilla was only six years old when original song was made and wasn't even producer when Caldwell's song was released in 1980.
Good singing, just a bit of constructive critisim from one muscian to the other. Your music editing or your drum beat anyway, is ahead of your singing, it's really bad and obvious to a musicians ear. Some might say thats the effect his was looking for, to sing behind the beat, yes it is done, by not like this. Just giving muscian feedback
I like this but the original is so much better it's just a different element of quality to it that's so unique and pure it just cannot be compared to a copy.
I had to favorite this song...ive listened to it everyday since sunday...i like the original too but as a producer/rapper dwele's version does it for me...and really brings out his vocal talent...he has a hellafied falsetto
Not better than Caldwell's...just different in a behind-the-beat, neo-soul kinda way. A refreshing and well-made remake by Dwele though. You would have to be a true student of 70s music to truly appreciate the Caldwells version. I'm not a Caldwell fan but I do appreciate the groundwork laid by songwriters and musicians like him. They gave us artistic standards to reach for.
both great songs but the caldwell song has a more unique voice to it. dwelrs voice though spectacular, sounds like something we've herd before. caldwells voice sounds much more can we say ' original"
I prefer Dwele's version. Dwele's voice is much more beautiful and smooth. I also love the beat, it's less sparse sounding than Bobby's. I don't think Bobby's is better simply because it's the original. There are plenty of times when an original song has been trumped by a cover version done later. I think this is one of the instances. I think both sang it from the heart, and both meant it with passion. I just prefer Dwele's sound. And I think it's your preference at the end of the day.
Let's give credit where credit is due. Dwele did a great job tackling this song but I have to say personally I like Bobby's better. How can you trump something that comes form the heart of an artist. This is Bobby's song!! But as far as which is better. It's all preference. Dwele's is much more sensual with the light tones and all and is more soothing and will appeal to many today with the drums things because it's more urban but Bobby just gave it to you the only way he could, from the heart.
can't decide which is better, but I think I'm leaning toward Bobby Caldwell's version because his sounds more like a classic and not so digital and modern
Ohhh shitt! This is a lot smoother than Bobby's but damn, when you've got versions of the songs that are equally great in their own rights you really lean to the one you heard first.
So, it's Bobby for me. [:
Still like Dwele's though. I love the range and the smoothness.
@TheFlamerOwnsYou or maybe someday, you will realize that music is not a competition and open your ears (and eyes, ha!) and discover how beautiful and liberating it really is.
i think this is much better than the original. bobby wrote a great tune, but dwele's voice is just so much smoother and easier to listen to. and the drum track is fire! r.i.p. dilla
Yeah Dwele doesn't know when to stop singing because when that guitar came on he was supposed shut the fuck up, because if he woulda shut up then that woulda made the song that much better.
@tipm8 really.....? cuz i for some reason just don't believe that considerin the fact that if you were you probably wouldn't actually feel the need to clarify that but...i digress cuz quite frankly i don't really care, but it's cuz i am black not i is black...that shit just makes you sound retarded, and i doubt that you are...not trynna be an asshole or anything, i'm just sayin
@06pannek really? man this join is pretty ill it's not better than the original but it's almost an original in itself though as far as remakes go lol it's pretty hot though even though the beat seems to stumble a couple times lol idk wth that's about but anyway i just like to get other ppl's p.o.v. so i just wanted to know what you didn't like about it
there just too different to compare i think even though their based on the same sample's, i love them both but if that what u think then its all good..
Para mim... esta é a canção mais linda de sempre... e a versão do Dwele não fica atrás da original, ainda hoje referida... ai que até dói, atenção a quando entra aquele BOOM BAP BOOM BAP.
Ok so just to clarify people: Bobby Caldwell did the original of this track, then J Dilla sampled it for Common's hit single "The Light", and then Dwele covered the original Bobby track. Funny thing is there all amazing talents.
To all let me sum things up a little here. Most if not all music of today from r& b, rap/hiphop... whatever has sampled music from the 70's. J dilla had voice, (in Common's 'Nagchampa') they came close on 'Think Twice' __man....
Dwele does have harmony, and I dont know whats up with the comparisons.
He's also an amazing producer, songwriter, and talented with the instruments.
