  • Wow, and good quality too.

  • mantab

  • Back when Michael Stipe had hair.

  • he was so cute

  • the guitarist and bassist are really getting into it!

  • What a crap song; reminds me of Sex Pistols garbage. If REM had stayed on that path they would have remained unknown. Needless to say, this tripe didn't make the Top 40.

  • if you werent alive when this performance happened, understand that 1983 was the days of big hair metal and faggoty british synthpop... these guys were rebels in 1983... nobody knew what to make of REM in 1983 - were they a country band? were they a pop band?... REM were one of the bastions of indie-underground music... if you went to college in the 80's you listened to REM..

  • @zwartepiet412

I knew what to make of them... just another punkish "new" wave of the latest newer wave. I dismissed them as the trash they were. Later, when they began breaking into the top echelons of radio play, I thought it was a different band. REM completely reinvented itself, and it's that reinvention which gave them success.

  • "I'm gay lol" Do you think this makes you funny or cool? No it doesn't, in fact, it just makes everyone hate you.

  • @xgmb45

So that's how it works? Why is it the people who wave the banner of tolerance are always the most intolerant people to be found everywhere? You preach tolerance, but when someone doesn't meet your expectations, YOU give yourself the right to be intolerant of them to the point of hate. So, only you have the right. Heads up sissy...people are free to like and dislike anything or anyone for any reason. At least drop the hypocrisy.

  • @mnpd007 I'm not preaching tolerance. I was just pointing out how unfunny his joke was. I honestly had no intention in bringing any politics into this, and I'm sorry if you thought that.

  • The best song from R.E.M. ,the best debut album of all time (tied with Please Please Me and Surfer Rosa)

  • Scott Pilgrim on the bass.

  • @Gilnar13 No, That's Mike Mills there.

  • mmm. best band ever. fuck off

  • sounds corny but R.E.M. is royalty.

  • Ten key moments in rock history, this is one.

  • I liked the video--then saw the ridiculous gay comment. How stupid. It's an amazing performance.

  • (continued)

    underestimated.

  • Thanks for the upload. Except for the "I'm gay, lol," caption, I would have "liked" this video.

It was around this time or soon after that I started listening to REM and it changed my life. Living in a small city where radio only played Madonna, classic rock, Michael Jackson, etc., they showed there was more. It was the beginning of a musical re-revolution. Getting the music out of the hands of the corporations. Of course, REM eventually sold out. But there influence shouldn't be

  • Music was ahead of its time. Stage moves? Not so much.

  • Don't know how youtube comments work. Top posts seem to fixed on "gay" thing.

MIke Stipe is damn pretty in this though, isn't he? Dang (and what a good singer).

Mostly I am gay about the deployment of two Rickenbacker guitars in an actual live performance. Trumps "Yes" for me right now (apologies to Chris Squire). This is rock, in the bucket. Like it or leave it.

  • I never saw them wiggle like that. Dave or Paul or somebody must've told them to.

Oh yeah, take that immature annotation off there, it's not funny.

  • GO DAWGS!

  • @xopowo69 ROLL TIDE!

  • I feel like I'm watching the Doors on their first national broadcast. I've never accually seen it but it just FEELS like how the Doors would debut.

  • That caption is fake for sure. Michael Stipe didn't come out until 2001.

  • if this song were a taco, it would be a really good taco.

  • @stude444 amen

  • wwwgreatbuyoutletscom wwwtopfuelsavercom

  • I saw this when it first aired! I was a huge fan of Late Night in high school and became a fan of REM. Wow, that was a long time ago.

  • @markintn ha ha me too ...it was a Friday night . I remember it well because I had just spent 5 days and nights on a grayhound bus from LA to Montreal...glad to be home I was at my buddies house smoking pot and playing pool while we watched late night with David Letterman...I was 21 .......now I'm 50 and I still love this tune

  • Great song but all three of 'em look like they're doing the Gotta Go Potty Dance.

  • God, why does the guy in the pink shirt keep buckling his knees and moving around like a freakin' invalid? He looks horrible and horribly gay. UGH! Gross!!

  • Most of us in '83 at least my friends & i hoped that this was not a OHW. we thought it was too good to be true. It wasnt.

  • look at how young they were...LOL!

  • Rapid Ear Movement

  • I remember this like it was just yesterday. I had graduated high school a year before. Gosh, that makes me old, but yet I was too young to be in the Athens music scene when REM were still there. I was born in The Classic City, too.

And I had forgotten how handsome Michael was with that glorious hair of his.

  • Wow, seems like the views have really hiked up on this video since the break-up.

  • I've reposted without the childish caption—just go to my videos. (pasting the link here isn't working for some reason.)

  • Comment removed

  • seriously

  • great video but idiotic caption wot a moron

  • He looks a bit like Richard Ashcroft in this vid.

  • Txs to Jimmy Fallon"s interview with Micheal, I can relive this ...

  • i love michael stipe and r.e.m. is my all time favorite band, but the caption is kinda funny. unexpected. so odd to see how many folks are super uptight about something so innocuous.

  • to the moron that posted this video. Micheal Stipe is gay. So the fuck what. at least he is not still in the closet like you. and another thing is he makes more money than you ever will.. get a life. loser

  • to the moron that posted this video. Micheal Stipe is gay. So the fuck what. at least he is not still in the closet like you.

  • why people still care about someone's private life ? that should the least of your concerns

  • Todays music could take a lesson...

  • the caption was hilarious and mature what are you talking about? i guess you don't appreciate sophisticated humor

  • Best. Band. Ever.

  • Ass kickin' Rickenbackers!

  • No. The caption doesn't ruin the video, just exposes whoever put it on there as a complete immature fuckwit!

  • wow you people are so fucking sensitive who cares about a stupid little caption?

  • Lose the stupid comment. Michael Stipe is bi. So what. Separate the art from the artist

  • REM were the American Smiths

  • @gogolplex74 I agree!

  • lol caption was hilarious because its so rediculous and unexpected.

  • I really really want to like this video for the sake of the genius that is REM....but that caption is so aggravating that is kinda pushes me away from it.

  • why take the time to upload an awesome video only to put a dumb caption on it? it does not make sense!

  • Saw them in concert even before the this. Thx for the link, FU for the comment..

  • what a bunch of balls.who the child who downloaded this

  • Big thumbs down for that caption. Loser.

  • What loser posted the GAY thing? Jesus Christ. If it weren't for REM, there would be no NIRVANA, no half-the-sorry-ass-bands you are a loser-fan of, so remove that caption or I will ruin your life. This is not a joke.

  • @dnapier889 That's why the world hates America. Lots of good people but too many haters & bigots sorry.

  • @dnapier889 Fuck you and your emotions. You took it way too seriously, and way too far. The uploader is not being serious, and you R.E.M. fans need to learn how to take a joke. Get your head out of baldy's ass, and come back to reality. The world doesn't revolve around your stupidity.

  • Great clip, except for the childish caption. Look beyond that and see the beginning of an amazing catalog of music. I will always love this band.

  • Wow I've never seen Stipes with hair before!

  • R.F.E

  • What fucking tit put the capion there. Some sad bastard sitting materbating over Stipe.

  • ...was watching live during this broadcast....life changing music...thx much...

  • Letterman seems so eager to get rid of them

  • I wish the album version was just a little bit faster like this. I guess they were nervous.

  • How many straight women out there know that Michael Stipe is gay and you would still like to screw his brains out?

  • what the fuck's that caption doing there

  • Fuck those lucky bastards who just happened to get tickets to the show the night an entire new genre of music was presented to the nation for the first time.

  • "your gay lol"

  • OMG I have forgotten how GREAT this song is. WOW. I was in 10th grade and dancing my butt off everytime I heard this song. I still get excited -- I just can't dance my butt off the way i used to.

  • gay? who cares? great music. just no need to paint your face blue later, ffs....

  • The caption is funny, cuz it says "I'm gay," like Michael is saying he is gay. And then it says lol right after. So its funny, right? If you lol, right?

    Poster is a tool.

  • mike and pete jumping around is just so great

  • why the hell did you put the gay tag? if you dont like REM then fucking dont waste your time.

  • What butt sniffer put in the I'm gay tag?

So long ago. I want to go back in time and take the R.E.M. adventure all over again. I would have to be the age I am now because I was only 9 years old when this show premiered.

  • What butt sniffer put in the I'm gay tag?

  • stipey wasn't all that bashfull here considering..

  • The mic is gay? Oo

  • 126 people need to suck stipe's big long pipe

  • I like the 'i'm gay lol' bubble. bravo to you, troll.

  • You don`t deserve to have this video. Seriously.

  • yeah that caption ruins the video. Super immature and small town.

  • @ferngullyful

relax mate it was a joke i guess.you should not take these things serious.

  • @ferngullyful just hide them and enjoy...

  • @ferngullyful Loosen up and stop giving such a shit, man. No harm in some immature fun now and then. Just relax and enjoy the great performance. We're all R.E.M. fans here.

  • @ferngullyful Ya, whats up with that? who ever captioned & ruined the video is QUEER! I have gay friends & they would'nt ever be that low life!

  • My husband met the members of REM when he did radio in college, right before their careers really took off, he's always said they were a nice bunch of guys; no, they haven't done a whole lot of popular music lately but its sad that they've called it quits.

  • CON ESTA CANCION R.E.M. INICIA LA ETAPA MAS MARAVILLOSA QUE HA DADO EL ROCK PARA MI: EL ROCK ALTERNATIVO.R.E.M. SE VAN DE LA INDUSTRIA PERO NO DE M ICORAZON,LOS AMARE POR SIEMPRE¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • R.I.P. REM 1980-2011

  • A great clip ruined by a voice bubble...who cares dude? Will look for another upload of the same clip without the bullshit to share on facebook...loser.

  • The song that started it all. No one had ever heard anything quite like this at the time. Thank the musical gods that they came up before MTV ruled, because the way they looked (not so Goodwill chic) sounded (jangely pop/punk/rock/country) and danced (like speed freaks on pogo sticks with no spines) back then wouldn't have translated into MTV music/biz vid pop succes, and we may have never heard of them. Why put an I'm gay caption over Stipes face, unless of course you're a latent homosexual?

  • I love it, but... who's playing the guitar arpeggio part? Buck seems to be strumming the whole time.Well, great version of their first hit.

  • Love the Fender amps. The song has dated and the dance delivery is quaintly power pop these days but this is a slice of history. And look how much hair Stipe has LoL.

There is also a clip somewhere on YT of them doing Driver 8 acoustically from this early period and it's wonderful.

  • RIP REM

  • I was going to post this to facebook until I saw the retarded "I'm gay lol" voice bubble superimposed on Stipe.

  • hahaha funny guitarist dancing hahaha, lame olday...

  • Hey Fu** Off You Haters Of Talent...this is so F'ing Sick. I love this band! They are the Best ever! So take your f'ing labels and stick 'em, dude.

  • THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MUSIC!!! MURMER WAS THE BEGINING OF A MUSIC REVOLUTION. YOU BOYS WILL BE MISSED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. THANKS AGAIN

  • RIP R.E.M. and the last great "college rock" band not named the Pixies.

  • Absolutely brilliant early stuff from one of the best American bands of all time!! Stupid Caption in the first minute or so.. why would you do that? (Grow up!) - Anyways, calling it a career after 31 very respectable years! Good Job R.E.M.!!!!!

  • College rock = alternative..R.E.M forever

  • ILUVR.E.M4EVER!

  • Love the punk vibe!

  • wasn`t comparing them to each other. just saying they each gave their bands their own signature sound. I was always on the REM side whe it came to which band do I Iike better, but that doesn`t mean I don`t like U2,. They are, after all, the biggest rock band on the planet. I like to keep an open mind to all kinds of music... except Justin Bieber of course

  • ya but peter buck doesn't play the same fucking note over and over again unlike the edge please don't compare rem to that weak ass u2 bullshit

  • electicguurihotness is a megasoreassmeathead. BETTER TO BE THOUGHT AN IDIOT THEN TO OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND PROVE IT

In the same way Edge gave U2 it`s distinct sound, Peter Buck did the same for REM and IS one of the most influential guitarists of the last 30 years.. If you listened to enough alternative -radio college rock stations durig this period, you`d know that many underground bands credit the REM sound as an influence.

  • Yep, a shame the guy who posted this great video turned out to be a childish idiot.

    Nice going, moron.l

  • @integral what did he do?

  • @integral oh wait, I see it now lol

  • Very cool to see this on YouTube. Thanks, Donnas.

  • The only person that's gay is the twat that ruined the clip.

  • letterman was the best thing on tv back then

  • That band, R.E.M....

    That was AWESOME... :):):)

  • its the end of the world as we know it.

  • Still perfect.

  • Thanks for all the tunes guys, it's been a blast :)

  • When you gotta go, you go. It was great while it lasted though... x

  • Thanks for some good music during my teenage years.

  • What a great band. I'll miss R.E.M. forever

  • :(

  • :(

  • Good video, stupid caption

  • RIP REM. you'll be missed

  • RICKENBACKER HAS THE TONE!

  • Wow- You need to put the year 1983 in the title of this video. "TV debut" would help also. Great find.

  • Whoever put the "I'm gay' statment is a complete asshole!!!. Maybe you're gay and are afraid to come out of the closet.?!?!

  • @toxc66 - well said !!!

  • Any of you who are offended or disgusted by the caption, just suck it up and get on with your lives. Frankly, I don't know what the uploader's intent was with the caption, but I don't really care. Things like that should be taken for a grain of salt. If you overreact to every little thing like that in life, you're gonna look like a pathetic asshole.

  • nothing beats those new wave jerky leg movements

  • i love your wit electricguruhotness, thats right put that ignorant little shit in his /her place!

  • 'Very Nice' my ass Dave...

  • The birth of alternative music...

  • HAIR!!!!!!!! LOL

  • the guy in pink i think is either having seizures or he has multiple sclerosis

  • @sciontcdude That guy is Peter Buck, and he's considered one of the most revolutionary guitarists in rock. Buck rules.

  • @cbeatty551 , and he's considered one of the most revolutionary guitarists in rock.' LMFAO

  • @ElecticGuruofHotness , yes, Peter Buck is considered one of the founding fathers of alternative music. Sorry you have to endure the garbage that corporate music feeds you today. Just because you were 8 months old when Kurt Cobain died doesn't mean you know anything about music. Also, please learn to spell ELECTRIC (or ECLECTIC - either way you failed on both)

  • @ElecticGuruofHotness - I noticed you uploaded an Underworld clip. My correction, you do have an understanding of music. Read up on Peter Buck - his style and riffs are pretty amazing. Plus note that he refuses to do guitar solos - something I appreciate.

  • @cbeatty551 son, fuck your own sphincter...ive got much more important things to do in my world, then meander with a trite, acerebral dolt like yourself, I have dont things, touched things, been part of things, that you could never possibly dream of....so believe me, BELIEVE ME, any retort will not be read, responded to or given an avenue of thought for a response, I shit bigger than you....you are NOTHING....

  • @ElecticGuruofHotness HaHa, sure thing kid. Sorry you've never met your father and you still know nothing about music. Now remember, responding is beneath you. Predictable, shallow little shit.

  • I was going to share this vid, but, with that stupid bubble, I think I will flag it instead. DICK!

  • what a performance

  • "calling out in transit! "I don't care if you are "Gay"! Just bang thjose guitars REM!!

  • "im gay lol"

  • I'm just gonna go ahead and turn off the annotations every time I watch this video from now on.

  • mike mills is pulling so many rocking shapes and moves in this video, oh my goodness!!!

  • its cool that so many people simply don't know about REM's career having two halves. many people assume that their career started in 1991. Well thye had 5-6 classic indie rock albums in the 80's that are such great raw albums!!!

  • Great to see this video. Thanks for posting. I prefer to think of the "gay" comment as the uploader saying, "Mike has millions of fans and he's queer. So fk all you homophobes. He is mega successful and loved just as he is." Now he is truly free to be himself and his fans still love seeing him perform and I'm one of them. Someday people will be able to say "I'm queer" and still become a success. So many talented people have to hide it for fear of being rejected.

  • For the one who posted that stupid comment: fuck you!

  • Who's the idiot who put the cute comments on Michael? You're not worthy to listen to R.E.M. Begone.

  • If you think about Michael Stipe and his sexual orientation is in the top 20 things that come to mind, you are missing out on one to the most fascinating people of our time.

  • Definitely a GREAT band! I was lucky enough to see them live in Cleveland at the Gund arena though well past the 80's Great music just great

  • My father had the first new invention on the block. It was called a 'vcr'. It had a special feature that allowed you to plug in the David Letterman show at 11:30 and so you didn't have to stay up!! you could record it on a vhs tape and watch it the next day. AWESOME!!! I would get home and clean the house and watch Letterman. He always had good music: Billy Idol, Aretha Franklin, REM, Blondie, and a BLACK Michael Jackson - serious , he was black! thanks for the memories.
