  • Greatest gun ever made in my mind. Yes it had a small mag but you had so much power and accuracy.

  • Cam actuated tilting bolt and the carrier/oprod acting as the hammer/slamfire system. Talk about removing as many points of failure as possible,I cant think of anything more simplistic in design except a Sten or MP-40.

  • @patsfanczar the ak47 is one of the best assault rifles ever made, the accuracy is fine, and it has the best reliability of all assault rifles, and it's service life is around 40 years, 2 times the m16/m4 or the H&K G3 wich both have around 20 years or even the FN FAL wich has 30 years

  • Oh, so it works like a shotgun bolt with a rear tilt locking block.

I went to the gunstore today and felt up a new BAR longtrac in 9,3, completely different.

  • But will it blend? That is the question.

  • Can someone explain me how the muzzle break affects performance?

  • John Browning was a genius, considering he designed this rifle in just a few months is an amazing feat.

  • Wow! I had NO idea this rifle fired in an "open bolt" configuration, OR that the rate of fire was simply changed by increasing "Lock-Time"! I was under the impression that the modern BAR sporting rifle was a direct descendant,..but it's actually a closer cousin to the AR platform...but with an inertia block and rails rather than an operating rod or gas impingement between the both.

  • these operation videos are great

  • The weird thing is my grandpa stole one of these films from the Navy...

  • The thing about small rounds is you can better their stopping power with a full metal jacket, hollow point, or both. Large rounds with small cases, however, can't have their accuracy bettered by anything, except maybe +p rounds on guns that can handle overloaded cartridges.

  • Close range. Note that. You can buy aftermarket, and deal with crap trying to attatch it, and then have to take it off to strip it. 7.62x39 is not "powerful" but has so-so killing power simply because of its diameter. The 5.56 is significantly more powerful by the actual physical definition (which is work done over time). And for close range you can use a shotgun or a submachine-gun, a rifle should be reasonably accurate, especially for how heavy the AK is.

  • Mr. Browning was a genius

  • And what's amazing is that most modern rifles operate on the same principles all these many years later! I wasn't even aware that the B.A.R. had a buffer tube in the stock. I thought that most M16 and AR rifles were the only ones to have this feature. Browning was truly ingenious during his time!

  • I have to dissagree the ak is superb

  • daonejorge is right about the AK, but while I was serving I always carried the SLR, I trust it and can hit a target at 300m with the iron sights. It's heavy, long and slower than most but it worked for me.

  • very informative thanks for putting it up

  • The only gun I ever trusted was the Fabrique National FAL or SLR as it was known. You hit someone with a 7.62 they dont bother you again.

  • why? there are plenty of guns that shoot the 7.62x51 that are ALOT better than the FN FAL

  • Yeah I know but what I said was I would rather have this then a m16 because a B.A.R. I beleave is better I know it's not in the same class but idc hell if you wanna go with best assult rifle I would choose a ak-47 over a m16.

  • The AK really isn't that good, it doesn't have any mounting points for sights or lights, etc.; It is freaking inaccurate, stopping power is overrated, the 5.56 has actually equally as much stopping power as it; the AK also has horrible sights and is heavier than many other rifles. The AK is super reliable, you can abuse it, but this is completely worthless because nobody intentionally or accidentally abuses their rifle that much.

  • are you joking, there is a sid rail mount on most modern AKM's and the AK is accurate up to 300 yards, while most major firefights happen at 100-150 yards its plenty accurate. the 5.56 is meant to do flesh damage through tumble, the 7.62x39 is meant to knock down and kill. its 1-2 pounds heavier than a M16 thats nothing. and the most dumb thing you said was nobody accidentaly abuses their rifle that much, yeah right, the AK's durability means everything in the fog of war

  • No. And the AK is well known for being accuate at less than 100 dumbass. And Durability in the fog of war? You kidding me? AKs are the worst rifle ever made, and Kalashnikov is an idiot.

  • its clear you never have fired an AK, nor us your argument even viable. you dont know what your talking about. the worst rifles ever made were the remingtion revolving rifles. you clearly dont know shit shut your mouth

  • LOL, your a moron, revolving rifles. That is completely different than what we are talking about, which isn't cap and ball. And the ak is still the worst rifle ever made. The barrel bounces, it is expensive, has no mounts, is too long, and too heavy. There is nothing good about an ak.

  • you know what, i thought when i first hit reply perhaps we were going to have a educated debate over this, but its clear you know nothing and are ingoring the points i make, the AK is one of the most cost effictive weapons ever devised! dont bother replying i have no intent to waste my time on trying to make a point to a dumb fuck

  • If its so effective, how come only people who have no other option use it? MORON!

  • they have plenty of options the world wide arms trade is littered with tons of diffrent types of guns. ypu sould look up the underground weapons factories in packastan and iran, they literaly make guns out of almost nothing, they have guns there that are supposed to be american made, they trade with the terroists, however they rather have AK's get your facts straight, your mis informed by popular cultures media

  • There are actually not that many guns at the price and amount as the AK. Thats the only reason they use it. You say "oh yeah, theres lots." Bullshit. You don't know what you are talking about. You make up stuff and call it fact. Fact is AKs suck. They have no mounts (what matters is picatinny, everything else is just stupid), no accuacy (i can supply you a vid from a reputable souce that shows how shiity the AK is fo accuracy), heavy, long and worthless.

  • You again! I swear to God you are like some kind of disease. If videos is all you can supply as evidence of the AK's innaccuracy you are truly pathetic. Go out your home and smell the fresh air for at least five minutes. Have you even shot an AK before? Judging by your comment i highly doubt it because you buy all the bullshit discovery channel throws at you.

  • I would take this over a m16 anyday.

  • This is heavier and filled a different role than the M16. This was the United States first SAW, the M16 is a service rifle, which replaced the M14 that, in turn, replaced the Garand.

  • Very rare you see an open bolt gas operated gun.

  • More common on sub-machine guns.

  • I saw an interesting show on the development of this gun awhile back. If I remember right, Mr. Browning was firing a rifle on a tripod in some tall grass and noticed how the grass was being blown back after each shot. He then decided to find out if he could utilize this "energy'. I guess that's why he made big money....

  • I thought he fired a rifle as a child, experienced the recoil, and tried to find a way to utilize that force in his designs as an adult.

  • You're thinking of Maxim and his inspiration for the Maxim gun. It was a much earlier design, and technically did not operate in the same manner as the B.A.R.

  • You are correct. Maxim developed

    open bolt, recoil operated gun.

    Browning developed open bolt, gas

operated gun. I developed the Intricular

    slam fire carbine.

  • @206blocked

That was the inspiration for the Colt-Browning 1895 'potato digger' machinegun. The BAR is a much more sophisticated development from the 1895.

  • where did you get your b.a.r.. ive wanted one for years and cant seem to find one anywhere

  • videos like this are why i love youtube :) Sometimes i feel like a learn more from youtube than i do from school!

  • exactly

  • does it fire from an open bolt? it looks like it at the start of the video

  • yes, it fires from an open bolt

  • this is very interesting i never knew how unique the BAR was

  • indeed. mr browning was a genious!

  • beatiful weapon , the BAR .

  • I love this old educational films - great find
