Neal Schon did not play on Santana (eponymous debut) or Abraxas; he appeared first on Santana III and on the Live w/Buddy Miles album and finally, Caravanserai.
Too funky. Gimmie some real Tower of Power Horns! This was period when synthisizers subbed for a cheap version of real instruments. It continues today. Not good.
I wish he would quit screwing around and use a real brass section. That would let the keyboards pursue other avenues in this particular number. Oh well absolutely not bad regardless.
@drewzillasaurusrex: Bear in mind that this is a clip from 1996. He does actually since the release of the "Supernatural" album in 1999 use a real brass section: Billy Ortiz on trumpet and Jeff Cressmann on trombone.
@q2w3bn876 Neal never rejoined the Santana band after he left. He was gigging steadily with Journey for the remainder of the 70's and beyond, their debut show at Winterland 12-31-73
He, was about 17 or older. I. seen The Original Santana Band in N.Y. w/ and An Unknown NEAL SCHON. the original Band is unmatched .and the Tower of Power horns also.... SEEN them also at the Fillmore ....
@jimdep1 Neal actually joined when he was 15 years old in 1969, sometime after Santana's Woodstock performance. He recorded 3 studio albums with Santana (Abraxas, Santana III, Caravanserai). He was 17 at the time Santana III was recorded. He left in 1973, when he was 19 years old.
@dtongamusic Neal didn't play on Arbraxas, he joined the band in between Arbraxas and Santana III, if I remember right, he officially joined Santana in early 1971.
@jimdep1 You're right about Abraxas, I was mistaken (but for some reason, it's listed under his discography under the official site). But Carlos and Neal have both said in interviews that he joined when he was 15 years old (which would've been in '69). I know he did some session work--mostly unreleased material--and rehearsals in the first couple years, but his "official" debut was on Santana III.
@dtongamusic I'm trying to figure when he could have joined Santana in 69. August was Woodstock, a couple months later they did Ed Sullivan and really took off during that time, gigging constantly. They played NYE at the Fillmore ( I think) and Neal still wasn't with them. I just don't know when they had time to do session work, besides working on the beginning stages the Arbraxas Album. I thought it was the next Spring that Gregg met Neal at some club in Palo Alto.hmmm, not sure.
@jimdep1 Neal says in interviews he actually met them when he was 14 (they all lived in the Bay Area), I think sometime before Woodstock. I read one of Carlos' biographies, and he talks about meeting Neal. Greg actually met him first and invited him to the studio to jam. Carlos didn't know a thing about Neal until he walked in on a session. Soon after, Greg and the rest of the band decided to ask Neal to join. Carlos didn't want to. Greg threatened to leave the band, so Carlos agreed.
@jimdep1 And Carlos' account was before Abraxas. Still trying to work on an exact timeline, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there on the web. The best info I can find seems to come from interviews and biographies.
The earlier person described exactly the Emperors from my hometown of Harrisburg,Pa, performed in my era of the sixties at the supersette those from the Burg remember, I hope tyrone Moss and mitlon brown is receiving somethin' somethin'from this..SANTANNA STOLED THIS SONG...SHAME
name calling is not necessary shows the breath of your ignorance, iwas the bass player for the emperors and we did not received a cent, do your research first
@drnubian I just listened the 45 record of the Emperors posted here on YouTube. It was great!! But looking back, how do you feel about receiving no payment for your contribution to the music industry?
if you get the title of the song "everyone's everything" then you know, that stealing is illusion, we are all one, the universe cannot live without you and without me, when we die, we remember that we are all the same spirit, incarnating into different bodies, one after the next, and simultaneously too. God is in everyone and everything in you and me, and the stars, its all one, we all come from the same big bang, we will all go back after we leave our bodies, eternity for everyone, one wave
are you ok, what does all this metaphysical, spiritualist jab has do with someone taking credit for someone's eles work. God is also about finding one's own center and grow into that
God is realizing that you are one with the universe. Santana says from his own mouth "no more us and them". Unity, one love. When you find this "center" that you mention, you will see the same on the outside as on the inside, other people are actually just another part of yourself, there is no separation, only the illusion of separation. Sometimes it takes ego-death for a person to realize this. Love is the seeing of self in all other things and people, you know, one love.
The music on this song is from the song "Karate" as originally performed/recorded by the Emperors in 1966. Santana wrote the new lyrics. Check out the songwriting credits: Carlos shares with Messrs. Brown and Moss the composers of "Karate."
dude, us too! except, we have a gospel rock theme, so we have jesus christ superstar too. is yours titled "everybody's everything (karate)"? b/c i have no idea why they have karate at the end! bahaha
Actually seeing Santana live is mind blowing. When the man hits the stage the energy and love that flows out to him from the audience is a most amazing feeling.
There are time when the drum players hands move so fast you can't even see them,
Love Carlos' long coat! Like a magician of music!! Saw him wearing that in 96 too at Wembley Arena, he came on stage wearing it and smoking a huge spliff, puffing out smoke rings! The band were really great then!
Neal Schon did the solo on the record. Stanford University Marching Band started doing the song back in the 1970s. The song predates Santana by many years.
Neal Schon did not play on Santana (eponymous debut) or Abraxas; he appeared first on Santana III and on the Live w/Buddy Miles album and finally, Caravanserai.
