I thought this was amazing when I first heard it, but I just checked out the live version... Fuck me, what a powerful rendition of an already brilliant tune.
The Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space album helped heal a few mental scars in the late 90's. It summed up all I wanted to say at the time. Listening to this now makes me smile - thanks for posting.
As someone who's currently going through a divorce, Spaceman captured any & every feeling one can go through whose heart is breaking & my heart breaks into a million pieces each time I hear this song. I can't express how sorry I am for hurting the one I've loved.
Just the saddest song ever. I can't listen to it too often as it is one of the only two songs to ever make me weep while sober, just from listening to it (the other is "Take It With Me" by Tom Waits)
Some other songs in my "Not to listen too often" list: Mistakes (Tindersticks), Let's go out tonight (Craig Armstrong), So You'll Aim Towards the Sky (Grandaddy), I remember (Low)...
I sobbed my heart out in a country lay by yesterday listening to this...i cant be with the love of my life and this song tipped me over emotionally...had a lush sob including howling and loads of snot...then pulled myself together.Cheers Jason Spaceman..Peace and love.Always!!!.xxx
The first time I listened to this song, i just tought: "What the fuck! This is more than 'amazing'!" It is as sad as "Caroline, no" By The Beach Boys & "How To Disappear Completely" by Radiohead.
Listening to songs like this and -like- "Beautiful mind" by The Verve is actually a privilege.
Am I right in thinking this was written because his missus left him for Dickie Ashcroft? That would mean this is the song written by a guy whose woman left him for the guy who wrote History! That's a lot of heartache!! My friends & I were debating as to whether History might actually by the more heartbreaking song though. I think it is (sorry folks...) Great great song though. Cheers for putting it on.
Correct. Kate Radley left Jason during the initial recording sessions for the album in 1997, though he denies that this effected the tone of the album in any way.
Think she actually left him in 1995, and married Ashcroft summer of 1995. This album was recorded throughtout 1996-1997 at various studios, as a glance at the sleeve notes will show.
And I'm sorry, the album is swimming in the heartbreak of a split. I really don't buy what he says.
Fucking adverts prior to Spiritualized, fucking wrong!
