This game was meant for Japanese audiences. That's why it was never released in the U.S. in spite of being quite a big hit in Japan. The creatures you ridicule are from Japanese mythology and the reason the depiction of hell there is based on Yomi which is not at all like the Judeo-Christian hell you imagine.

This game came out in 1987 way before Star Tropics and it's a beloved famicom classic among the Japanese along with Ganbare Goemon which also wasn't released in the states.

Puma Man was awesome, but I guess my favourite MST3K episode is either "Werewolf" or "The Crawling Terror". It requires a pretty skillfull director to make a movie THAT bad. =0p

Werewolf was good too, and Hobgoblins deserves mention for being the literal worst they ever had to watch, so bad that they made cardboard cutouts of themselves and taped them making random commments to escape the torture.

Oh the utterly ridiculous Hobgoblins ... I loved that one, saw it in one sitting with the really screwed one where some nerdy boy discovers that his dad was murdered by some weird sect living in a cardboard temple in a hole in a nearby wood which he manages to find using an ancient treasure map drawn on a napkin. The4 kid had this pot-bellied redneck sidekick called .... Rausdauer? I think it was called "The Great Sacrifice" or something.

It's a pity that MST3K is no longer around in this era of brilliant directors like Uwe Boll and Paul Anderson ... I bet AvP and Dungeon Siege would be a lot less painful to watch with a couple of robots in the foreground.
