  • i loved the series, mainly because i would have never known who james purefoy was, but i hated how they depicted Cleopatra. She was not that decadent. I cannot imagine her killing people for sport. They were just perpetrating the Roman mythology that has lasted this long . I suppose there will always be chauvinist among us that refuse to adore a woman of power, intelligence and unlimited wealth. Too bAD FOR THEM,GODDESSES RULE!!!!!!!!!!

  • This series accomplished what it set out to do (unlike Deadwood) and that was to show Julius Caesar and Octavian's rise to power...the only way it could have gone longer is if they had shown in detail the battles...that would have consumed more time..and thats it. This show was brilliant in the way it capsulized the entire story into the 2 seasons it had. The most expensive show ever, which is why Deadwood did not have its third and very much needed 3rd season.

  • @WiseGuy5674 Initially they were set for, I think, four seasons, showing in detail the rise of Octavian and fall of Mark Antony, but because of budget problems, they had to cram it all in half a season, that's why the second season seems a bit rushy. So, in a way, it wasn't canceled, just shortened.

  • @cannabisabuser ..They were set for 3 seasons, but condensed it into 2..and it worked..It was rushed through because of cash restraints. "Rome" was, and still is, the most expensive TV series ever made...Bottom line is..'Deadwood' fans are the ones who suffered the most.

"Deadwood" ended its 3rd season on a cliff hanger, and never came back..because of the expense of "Rome", and the popularity of the actors..who now demanded bigger salaries.

Its the only time HBO has ever disappointed me.

  • This explains why each episode cost $10 million....

  • why does a brilliant show like this get cancelled after 2 seasons when bullshit shows like american idol are still on air

  • I couldn't agree with you more. Nation is dumbing down.

  • I think it's because Rome is too costly for the actual public it has xD Since there's a much larger population of idiots who can't tell a quality show from a shitty one, Rome didn't get enough feedback to be worth making a third season. At least I think that's how it went =/ Major bummer if you ask me - I don't usually watch series and shows and stuff, but this one, I went out ot buy the dvds as soon as they were out and since then I've watched both seasons about 4 times each xD

  • It wasn't really canceled.

They wanted to show the rise of Caesar and Octavian, and thats what they did.

'Deadwood' is the series that got canceled because HBO had to do a second season of Rome and could not afford to complete a forth and final season. 'Deadwood, like 'Rome' are brilliant shows, but fans of DW got royaly screwed.

  • LA mejor serie de la historia!! : ) from Mexico

  • ROME war sehr gut weil die produzenten das geld nicht verschwendet haben sondern eine qualitativ hochwertige produktion abgeliefert haben

  • From what I've read it was all these intricite sets that ruined the show. The sets got to expensive.

  • I've read the same things. A shame because the characters and dialogue are what carried the show, not the sets(even though they were amazing).

This show reminds me of Arrested Development in the way it ended, was a great show, great actors and writers, received awards, but didnt get a big enough fan base until it was already cancelled. Now everybody I know watches and loves these shows but never watched it while it was on TV.

  • I have the complete show and i just can't stop watching it.

    Love ROME

  • TV the way the Gods intended it to be.

    ROME, RIP

  • Please HBO! Make a season 3!!

  • vorenus is my fav

  • There is not (and it's really doubtful that ever will be in a near future) NOTHING like this amazing series on tv or movies. I treasure the DVDs!

  • i miss rome

    i love this show

  • i really love this show!! me and my hubby own a complete season 1 and 2 dvd of this.....

  • WHY DID THEY CANCEL THIS SHOW?

  • Basically, it was canceled because it was too expensive to produce. The Bean Counters are always fighting to be in control. For example, one of the greatest series ever made "Deadwood" another HBO series - was canceled after three years. Why, because it was too expensive. Then David Milch (the father of Deadwood) created the series "John From Cincinnati" ...which cost about 1.95 to produce.

  • @vid22dotcom

I thought the set burned down and was too expensive to reproduce...

  • The Show was made too show how the republic became the roman empire so there was noting more to tell after the end of season 2

  • There's still the story of Titus Pullo to be told and the political machinations of Octavian.

  • That wouldn't be as interesting

  • Ahh.... bull shit. You are absolutely dead wrong, they could have a lot, lot more stuff to tell in later seasons.

  • Looking foward to the seires gets shown on Danish tv

  • *sigh* I miss my Romans already!

  • Why don't the makers of HBO Rome give up and start making films about cavemans with long hair and wooden clubs living somewhere in the ice age, they already have the right casting for such a movie !

  • Thanks for posting this...great to see the guys behind the scenes. What a kickass series!! Mmmm Titus Pullo, sandal-babe or what!!

  • titus pullo is the best!!!
