There's also a good link between Janacek (the Romantic/Modernist composer of the first music) and Neutral Milk Hotel; they both use elements of Slavik folk music. Radio 3 is excellent, by the way - a credit to minority interest music.

in an aeroplane over the sea is the most heartbreakingly beautiful album ever made... it defies genre classifcation (they use a theremin for christ's sake) and the lyrics are the closest thing to poetry every put on a pop record (and that includes dylan)... it's a shame that the level of sensitivity that it took to create it also necessitated a withdrawl from the limelight...
