stupid mindless profession, overworked and doing mindless super technician work. Most of the pharmacists I have worked with over 20 years hate the job. Money is not everything. School was a total waste of education.
@Jefgg That's what I hate about the internet, people grow a pair of huge balls and become blatantly racist, but never in blatantly in the general public.
@DjBrieon Junior in high school? Oh no sweetie you have time! I'm going into my sophomore year of college and I'm just starting to heavily consider pharmacy as a career. Take your time cuz you may end up changing your major later
I love my Job as a pharmacist, I make 135,000 dollars a year... to all you young teens wanting to become a pharmist its not terribly hard gradeswise. you also might be able to get a few days of paid vacation like me :). Overall a great job if you are wanting to buy some thing or just have fun while your young
@WarrenAch Want me to post my college transcript? Graduated in 1999 with a C- average and I'm doing just fine today. I'm not restricted in any way -- I do 100% of what any pharmacist does, and I scored in the 95th percentile on the NY boards, which are among the toughest in North America. Good grades are NOT required, just a pharmacy degree from an accredited college and a passing score on the board exams.
@WarrenAch do u think a pharmacist will still be a good high paying job in Canada in the future? Just wondering, i am in high school i am want to go in to pharmacy. I'm living Ontario
Pharmacy is awesome. Six years of school -- partying, drinking 'til you black out, hanging out with chicks, hazing, sleeping through class... then you graduate with a C- and make $120,00+
@TruAzn100 Absolutely -- grades don't matter, as long as you get your degree and pass your board exams, you can make just as much as a pharmacist who had a 4.0!
@HanaKimi4u And pharmacists aren't hardworking and honest? I work 10 and 12 hour days on my feet with no lunch break, limited bathroom breaks, and constant interruptions. It is a VERY demanding -- but rewarding -- career.
i am 15 now and i want to be a pharmacist. im a male. anyone experienced, tips would be helpfull. i am a sophomore in high school and currently my GPA is around 2.5
@stfudawg123 your still pretty young so you just need to raise your GPA's, is pretty easy just study hard and if you maintain the grade it will help you when you go to a college. Also, i suggest getting into science competitions like science fair.
Kate James - As a female I'm considering going to Pharmacutical school. Do you see a disadvantage to garnering serious consideration for employment around you (in your pharmacy network) for women?
Due to supply and demand being unequal ( 2010 ) - the current average starting wage for new PharmD grads is about $55 an hour. and the high to low range I have seen is about $ 48 up to $ 77 per hour. $ 77 was for 3rd shift clinical hospital pharmacy with a "shift differential" for working 10 pm to 8 am ( 7 days on - 7 days off ). A new PharmD grad who accepts $ 70K as a starting salary is most likely in public service or education.
its a very easy job once u get in stable, high pay, not stress. i guess it can be boring at times but it is a good job since it is a profession thats what i have heard.
i am probably going to be one in the future hoepfully still in high school
First, talk to some pharmacists & ask if you can observe them working (I did) because they may not be able to hire you. If you are interested in being a pharmacist, the courses would not be difficult BECAUSE you are interested. For instance, I might have trouble with political science because I am not interested in that field. If you have an aptitude for science you should have no problem at all. I have worked anywhere from 8 to 13 hours per day. A background in math and science is a plus.
I have been a pharmacist for over 40 years. Mentally it can be brutal and although it is not a very physical job, it requires one to stand on one's feet for long periods of time. Dealing with the public is the pits because they are buying things they DON'T want! The schools are now a minimum of 6 years. When I was in the 5 year program our fail-out rate was around 40 percent. Not an easy school to get through! So don't knock the Pharmacists!!!!!
Pharmacists do have a life and a very good one. Just be ready to attend pharmacy school for 6 years of studies. It is no harder than any other college, just on the average 2 years longer. It is well worth the effort!
So you mentioned that it's good to be a pharmacist if you have an aptitude for science. I very much do, but what science subjects did you spend a lot of time working on in college? How to recognize medication and what it's used for? I personally and passionate about biology. I heard you have to learn A LOT of chemistry in college. Is that true? Chemistry isn't my favorite, but it's ok- and its still science. :)
Thanks for your interest! We took general and organic chemistry, quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, physiology, physics, and pharmacy and chemistry of medicinals. Today, the courses are similar just with different names for some of them. Oh, I forgot to mention botany, zoology, pharmacognosy and pharmacology and microbiology. Sound like fun? It was highly interesting. Sorry, but chemistry would be one of your courses. Hope I didn't scare anyone!
In response to your letter, I believe the level of difficulty is about the same. Pharmacy school is 6 years and medical school (after 4 years pre-med) is 4 years. Of course med students face an internship, etc. More women are going into pharmacy. Get the idea of difficulty out of your head! It is NOT impossible! If you are interested in pharmacy you will have NO problem with the courses.
Here in quebec, pharmacists can get their own pharmacy, which means, they usually start with 100k-200k/year (private only) and 60-70k in hospitals(government sucks).
18% are getting 500k a year.(Yes,500k...)
Hot spots and crowded places in cities are giving lots and lots of money, even to pharmacists.
@WarrenAch in Ontario its the same case, prob the retail is the best bet in Ontario. The small towns i heard can have the best paying postions. Owning a pharmacy however i heard its not the best in Ontario.
It's always dangerous to get into a career just for the money. Changes in supply/demand can alter salary so I choose to just do what I love. I'll have enough to eat LOL!
@tim23z tru but a pharmacist career will never drop in employment, this is a career that the supply and demand remain relatively constant, unlike other jobs.
For the amount of schooling, I hope that they make alot of money (5 years university). To start at $70-80,000, is a sweet deal. i'm a registered nurse and a good year in Canada is between $65-73,000....I see a career change in the future. Pharmacy is not strenuous either...
I never thought out all the possibilities you can earn as a pharmacist. Investing in the pharmaceutical world makes good sense to do, even if you are not a pharmacist and yes, the more hours you invest in your career, the more you can make out of it. I just want to put the least amount of time in to break $100k and i'll be happy.
Currently - right around $ 50 an hour is a norm - in a basic retail "run of the mill" position. So $90-110K is the norm. If you want to work like crazy - 50-60 hours a week at more than 1 employer - and you get a sign on bonus(es) - stock discounts and stock options etc.. - then you seriously would make $140-220K with a little effort and lots of hours of course. Then due to demand - there are various flexible hour situations - various fields to practice in etc..
That may be true, but it is my impression that the demand is increasing faster than the new students. Projections are most states can't produce enough pharms to meet the growing demand caused mostly by baby boomers. Retirement communities such as South Florida will always need them. As with any projection, this is all speculation.
there are no more pharmacist jobs. supply has overrun the demand
