Alright I looked into it a little bit and as far as I could tell there isn't any performance or handling differences by getting a Shinka. It is just a more luxurious trim package, basically one step above the Grand Touring package. Though it is considered to be a special edition so they are worth more.
As far as I know, the Shinka is just a special edition with different colors inside and out. I don't believe there is any handling or performance advantage over any other RX-8. If someone knows something to the contrary, feel free to correct me.
It's a 2005 Mazda RX-8 Grand Touring with a six speed transmission. I never looked into shutting the buzzer off because I liked it. I wouldn't have to take my eyes off the road while driving just to know when to shift.
Oh and the spark plugs cost like $30.00 a piece. But if I could afford the gas for the driving I do, I would buy another in a heartbeat. I found it a blast to wring out to 9k (in fact its good for the engine to do so) plus I always liked the styling.
Only one complaint was the gas mileage but I knew about that when I bought it. Best mileage I was able to get was 22 mpg. It had a 16 gallon tank and I managed to get 300 miles out of an entire tank once. The only other thing that I knew about but was still annoying was that once you started the car you didn't want to shut it off until it was at least at running temp. If you didn't you ran the risk of flooding the motor plus it wouldn't do the apex seals any favors either.
And on the handling front, it always drove like it was on rails. The only way the car was going to break free was if you wanted it to or if you were driving well outside its limits. I know I could take those clover shaped off ramps at 60 mph without the tires even squealing.
@yogurtlol I never had any issues with my engine. Never flooded, never leaked, and didn't blow up. And trust me I ran the snot out of the engine. But it also wasn't my first rotary so I knew about the qwerks and how to maintain it. I actually still have an 83 RX-7 with the 12A and the 4bbl at home.
dont even classify an rx8 to a civic, sure any bonehead will say oh my civic will hang with it in the straights, rx8s are an autox machine, well destroy any pos civic autoxing. Same annoyin civic guys think they can beat my evo on the street. I do love bashin you vtec guys, gotta say sometimes i miss my 05 silver rx8. But in the end power to 4 tires and 400 hp in stead of 200 and rwd. Surely its got its perks, just wish the evo trans gears were as wide open as the rx8s plus 6spd is always nice.
@bushguts1 A stock Si is no quicker. I love both cars. 2006+ Si and 2008+ RX8s make my non-existent vagina wet. If I had to choose between either I'd probably take the Si, just cause I have no clue how to work on a Rotary! :D Out of curiosity, why don't you have any 0-60 or 0-top end videos? I'd love to see what the supercharger does.
@bushguts1 Dude, not gonna lie, you have a nice Civic. But seriously, there's no need to hate. You have a supercharged Civic Si. This is a stock RX-8. If your car WASN'T faster, you should be worried. So, chill.
@bushguts1 You put a supercharger on your Si, let me put a turbo on my '8. Then not only will I smoke you in a straight line, but I'll also trash you in the corners.
@MrRectalRanger not personally, but a close friend had one. by 130,000KM it leaked and burned crazy amounts of oil.. i heard after they updated the oil seals/passages or whatever the issue wasnt as prevalent
@yogurtlol The earlier models' oil injection system was troublesome - it didn't inject enough oil to properly lubricate the internal seals, thereby causing the engine to fail. This is how the Renesis got a bad rep. But they fixed this on all later models, and even offer a free flash (MSP-16) to sort of reprogram the injectors to inject more oil. RX-8s are made to burn oil, and they do so at a rate of around 1quart every 1000 miles. Also depends on how you drive it, but it's not very much.
@ImaFenderGuy and thats obviously due to weight and handling benefits from a smaller rx8 if thats even true which i doubt it is. anywyas, rx8s are slow and ugly and NOT rx7s. HIDEOUS interior.
@boostedwolfie Lolwut? So basically you're calling an M3 slow as well? And hideous interior? Have you ever even been inside an Rx8 GT? Maybe you're not enough of a baller to afford a grand touring....
@ImaFenderGuy actually just the opposite, where the rx8 gains on an m3 in turns and braking, an m3 makes up that in straights even though thats not what they are for, they are much quicker than rx8's which are slow and ugly. And you think your a baller because your in a gt? oh my god super high class shit!! please kid, even a 318ti is ballin compared to a fucking mazda, dont they make minivans too? lolWUT?
@ImaFenderGuy indeed. this kid doesn't know. he appears to be an M3 fanboy. once you drive an RX-8, you will understand what fender is talking about. amazing handling rivaling supercars and absolutely sexy looks! i'd take even the new RX-8 over any M3 based purely on styling. and also, the grand touring truly is so much more than the base and can run circles around your precious little bimmer all while costing 1/4 what a new M3 will. now we can use all that extra cash on upgrades to crush the M3

Is there a way to turn the shift beep off? I know there is a huge power drop after ~9,500rmp but could imagine that noise getting bothersome.

its an automatic, lame

@gingernator1 that's not an automatic, automatic Rx8's redline at 7500 RPM's

@gingernator1 yeah because automatics beep when they shift.. can you imagine how annoying that would be?
