I love this video. Can't stop watching it. The actors did a perfect job. I don't think it was meant to be serious acting. Seems almost as though they are trying to make fun of Seung-hui more than do his one-act actual justice. Perfect to me. "What? What?" and "You were packin' on McDonald's fat." = best parts. Honorable mention is the thrown Styrofoam.
Is even more disturbing seeing that shitty script in a video if you know where it comes from. Nice job guys, made me laugh but I dont think this screenplay was suposed to :S
The Dad is the only one taking this seriously. Great professional actor. Those other ones are mucking this up. Can we please get some talent in here, I want to watch this the way it was meant to be shown.
@ANeonTiger It's an (unintentional?) spastic mess of a play, so it has camp value. If trained theater people could turn "Manos" into a musical, then untrained actors could do "Richard McBeef", and they did it well here.
This is features some of the GREATEST acting I have ever seen. Brando, DeNiro, Pacino all SUCK compared to master thespianism displayed in Richard McBeef!!
There's something strangely compelling about these absurd characters. And you have to ask yourself whether mcbeef is justified in attacking the son. Despite being the most reasonable and patient, he is continuously abused and alienated by the people he should be closest to. Since we see that he is capable of murder in the end, were the son's accusations truthful? Is the son a product of an insane, gullible mother or are they both simply traumatized by a recent death? Why is mcbeef involved?
@Straichen There are so many deep and probing questions about human-kind that are raised by Richard McBeef. I always discover something new and fascinating with each reading of the script, on account of its myriad of complex layers and references to modern society and culture. If I had to be stuck on a deserted island with just one book, it would be the Richard McBeef script. It is truly the Ulysses of our generation.
@Straichen You are trying to look too deeply into the play. Hui's writings have been reviewed by writers and novelists and all agree that his writing is juvenile and "not good". If anything his writing just demonstrates his mental instability.
@camgan1 That sounds like an undergraduate-level response. There is no such thing as "too deeply." His reading of the text is no less valid than theirs.
@camgan1 Then it's time for you to understand that in literature studies, readings are valid to the extent that they can be supported by your analysis and interpretation of textual evidence, not because of who said them. That's why professors (yes, some of us use the Internet) don't say things like "this reading is the correct one, because I'm the professor."
Of course, if Stephen King is your idea of literature, then you may have only a dim idea what literary criticism is in the first place.
Ever see an old movie called Night of the Hunter? The original starred Robert Mitchum and was directed by Charles Laughton. It was considered so bizarre at the time that Laughton never got another directing job. The remake was with Richard Chamberlain, which--knowing what we know about him--was even creepier. This nut's McBeef thing is actually kind of similar. Wonder if any of his supposed expert profs noticed, or if he found only dark sarcasm in the classroom?
wow, this is actually a very good play. I'd like to shake the hand of the guy who made this. I'm sure he's a very cool guy and doesnt afraid of anything
DUDE. THE GUY WHO MADE THIS PLAY WAS CHO SEUNG HUI. THE KILLER OF VIRGINIA TECH MASSACRE. HE KILLED 32 PEOPLE. A SCHIZOPHRENIC. YES, HE'S NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING! Good luck shaking his hand, btw.
"I think I get this. Cho is probably saying that *he* was like Richard McBeef, an innocent victim who was bullied. Notice how they're making fun of his name, just like they probably did to Cho. At the end, McBeef kills the boy out of fury. I don't support Cho - but it's interesting to see how this compares to his life."
Yes. I read the play before it got taken offline. IT was absurd. And the beautiful ham acting in this vid does it justice; the words here are 100% accurate as I remember.
@BryanAJParry no, the play is still online. Go to thesmokinggun(.)com and type in "cho seung-hui" and click on "Virginia Killer's violent writings".......you can read the full play there.
@HBKanedge818, The transcripts of the plays were released by AOL almost immediately following the incident when it was discovered that a current employee of AOL was in his class and still had possession of these works. You could put something like this together in a day, and a lot of the shots were taken where they could have easily been reading off the paper. Besides that, with such infantile script, how long would it REALLY take to memorize anyway? :) Props to the actors..
Terrible fucking acting, terrible fucking editing, can we get an adaptation of this play that is done well? I think it could really be an amazingly dark and insightful play if only it was done right.
@Senjhin Hey, all you have to do is fix some of his typos, take out and add just a few things and with a hollywood budget your in business. It might not be well written but I've seen some big box office successes with terrible writing as well. Take the main theme of the story and rewrite it if you have to. You could make alot of money solely based on who wrote it originally. People love a chance to see into the mind of a killer.
@beingjoshmc Yeah, but this kid wasn't twisted in the sense that he was cunning and sociopathic and etc. He was just some alienated tortured kid that wrote really bad stories for lack of imagination and explosive inner anger.
@beingjoshmc I beg to differ. I think this had appropriately corny acting, great editing, etc. If you want a better adaptation, why not convince a group of friends to film one, and we'll see which one is better.
Nice re-enactment but I would picture John's death to be way more violent because Cho saw himself as Richard McBeef.. You guys posted this a mere 9 days after the massacre. how were you able to know that much about Cho so quickly let alone a random play he written.
I had to re-post this comment I gave months ago. Somebody hid it, probably the uploader intending to block any criticism of his/her beloved "masterpiece". Here's what I wrote:
For sure Cho's script is nothing but literary abomination, but the acting isn't any better. I guess I should say that it was probably smart for the guy who plays McBeef to show little if any emotion. Cos what would have happened if he had tried harder? Just look at the other two and you will know.
I think they changed the ending. I'm pretty sure Cho's ego(that makes up for his azn epeen) is large enough that he kills his dad. Also, I'd be careful about saying gook mutter dutter, its their equivalent of nigger
@deathcabangel No, the original ending does have the dad hit the son. As a matter of fact people speculate that the dad is supposed to represent the killer
After watching this transfixing film adaptation of Cho's profound masterpiece, which if I am not mistaken delves into the issues of Marxian class struggle and the racial divide during the African-American Civil Rights Movement, I looked beside me and noticed that I filled a walloping 11 buckets up to their brims with my vomit! It's such a GROSS movie, but it has to be the BEST one I have ever watched! (It would also be especially compelling to hear Morgan Freeman narrate a version of McBeef.)
This was great! The guy who played mcbeef did a great job, but he didn't really fit the description. Should have been fatter/balder. The kid did an awesome job. The girl was ok too, but too young to be his mom. The Young Jeezy music was strangely appropriate too. Overall grade: B-
Fuck you in the ass. I'm not even joking. Cho was not a bad person. He was just severely disturbed. If only there hadnt been so much scum in the world he probably could have lived a happy healthy life. All you are doing is making a soulless ruthless mockery of him and all the innocent people who died because of the scum that caused him to be this way.
@porkchopenvy oh please. we ALL have to live with the scum on this earth, not just Cho. but you don't see everyone running around with guns shooting each other. this motherfucker doesn't deserve any sympathy for what he did.
@zepps88 I'm going to respectfully tell you to go fuck yourself and dip your pee stick in a can of tar in your garage with all the other tools that make you sexually aroused. Cho was a good kid. All the excrement of the world just overloaded him. If I ever catch you pulling this shit again I will track you down and shoot to kill you slowly and painfully. I'm not even joking. People like you just piss me the fuck off.
@porkchopenvy he was overloaded by the excrement that his brain created. he was living in a delusional world and he snapped. he had a very loose grip on reality and should have been living in a mental institute. he was just so shy and introverted that nobody realized how crazy he actually was.
good luck tracking me down, dipshit. i'm fucking terrified...
@zepps88 Well, just know that you're being a shameless asshole and if you continue to act like this I will pray that you become a global pariah. I just hope you will think about how you are acting.
You think in your linear, pretty head that if we just hang anyone who would bully or say a single negative word, and no one would ever commit evil again? Yes, society can derange individuals, but rarely to the point where they murder in cold blood. Cho has only himself to blame for what he did--the fact that he considered himself a martyr and Jesus just goes to show that he was fully willing and had no regrets in murder.
There you go. That's the limit of your intelligence: using expletives to counter what you have no explanation for. Next time, think before you speak, or rather, write something. You're not going to get very far in life supporting the likes of Cho and others like Timothy McVeigh, who I'm sure you also consider a "victim of society". Other than that, I can recommend you use a Yellow Book to find a few good psychologists
Anyone reckon Cho himself could have been molested? Or is it just another reason for the kid to hate McBeef? I almost wish I didn't know who wrote this cos it's kinda funny. Well done guys brilliant performances.
I love 'pooey pooey boy' line. Cho was trying to be funny in parts.
I wonder if actually wanting to be a writer, while possessing the degree of talent suggested by this play, wouldn't plunge any of us, and quickly, into the depravity of arbitrary murder.
Rambling, disjointed and unimaginative. Somehow, it even manages to lack the interesting quality of crazy. Even the morbid fascination of an associated record-setting act of mass murder fails to inspire. In fact, the work is not enhanced by morbid fascination; rather, this work is somehow bad enough to blunt the significance awarded Cho by his murders. Works of greater artistic importance are created accidently by most people.
Agreed, this is comedy gold. btw, the stepdad is about as ineffectual as possible, while the kid is soooo freakin annoying. I wanna slapo that biatch!!!
Also i think the play shows how Seong viewed adults, as "other" life forms basically. The guy was a complete loon! yay!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For sure Cho's script is nothing but literary abomination, but the acting isn't any better. I guess I should say that it was probably smart for the guy who plays McBeef to show little if any emotion. Cos what would have happened if he had tried harder? Just look at the other two and you will know.
This is just a usual adolescent violence/sexual/profanity-laden piece of "literature". No one would have guessed what was gonna happen just by reading this.
What are you talking about? This is a poetic masterpiece. It's subtle irony and allusions to pre-colonial times is masterful. Never have heard such transcendent use of the English language. Move over, Keats!
This is a postmodern work of art.

good luck tracking me down, dipshit. i'm fucking terrified...
zepps88 1 year ago
@zepps88 Well, just know that you're being a shameless asshole and if you continue to act like this I will pray that you become a global pariah. I just hope you will think about how you are acting.

@porkchopenvy
What scum? You?
You think in your linear, pretty head that if we just hang anyone who would bully or say a single negative word, and no one would ever commit evil again? Yes, society can derange individuals, but rarely to the point where they murder in cold blood. Cho has only himself to blame for what he did--the fact that he considered himself a martyr and Jesus just goes to show that he was fully willing and had no regrets in murder.

@Informer3X I'm going to ask you a question and all I want you to do is think about what you're saying. Are you an asshole?
porkchopenvy 1 year ago
@porkchopenvy

Lol, worst screen play ever.

I wonder if actually wanting to be a writer, while possessing the degree of talent suggested by this play, wouldn't plunge any of us, and quickly, into the depravity of arbitrary murder.
mrrusss 1 year ago 2

The guy was a complete loon! yay!

Goddamn, this is hilarious.

Even with all the flaws I think this is the best Richard McBeef yet. Step dad has to be played by a fat balding person imo.

Presence of the Sundance film festival / Verizon ad is unexpected to say the least.

yeah, pretty bad acting, but interesting nonetheless.

@oilmonkie it wasn't bad acting, just bad screenwriting

This comment has received too many negative votes show
For sure Cho's script is nothing but literary abomination, but the acting isn't any better. I guess I should say that it was probably smart for the guy who plays McBeef to show little if any emotion. Cos what would have happened if he had tried harder? Just look at the other two and you will know.
citybuster 2 years ago
This is just a usual adolescent violence/sexual/profanity-laden piece of "literature". No one would have guessed what was gonna happen just by reading this.

@citybuster
What are you talking about? This is a poetic masterpiece. It's subtle irony and allusions to pre-colonial times is masterful. Never have heard such transcendent use of the English language. Move over, Keats!

Oh god.. I hope people didn't really take what I said seriously.........
averagehomosapien 1 year ago
@citybuster sure, If he wrote this at 13, I'd think it was normal. But he wrote this pile of shit in his 20s. Cho never mentally matured.

You gave a mass murderer what he wanted by filming that shitty script.
FatherWarhol 2 years ago
he didn't wanna make a movie: he wanted to wipe out the human race.
either way this movie sucks and everyone talks about how shitty this is, so i don't think he'd want this embarrassment.

I feel guilty about it but I have to admit to having a morbid interest in SHC's plays, and this is a pretty good dramatization.
