I really enjoyed Colin Jeavons' performance as Lestrade in this episode. He has such a good combination of confidence, with a little bit of swagger, coupled with a genuine decency and a true respect for Holmes. I think he's easily the best Lestrade in any of these episodes.
Also love Lestrade's reaction to Oldacre's sudden reappearance. First surprise... and then boy is he pissed! He looks like he's gonna shoot lasers out of his eyes into Oldacre for wasting his time!
N'awww, poor Lestrade. So sure he has this one in the bag, and then Holmes produces the 'murdered man' out of the wall in a puff of smoke. xD And he looks so precious with his brown top-hat and smug little grin, especially at 1:19 there.

*scrolls through comments and whistles* Wow, no love for Lestrade at all, guys? Well, hopefully you'll change your tune by the time you watch The Six Napoleons. ;P
I just read this story not too long ago. I love how Holmes always looks like a total madman until some result is achieved. And I also love how Holmes never takes a case unless they're something unusual about it.
Doyle freely admitted that he didn't worry too much about details when creating a good story. I think this tale's adaptors realized that Holmes, with his background in forensics of that day, wouldn't be fooled by animals bones. And by the amount of smoke we saw, shouting 'Fire!' was hardly necessary. Holmes literally smoked out the evil rascal!
I like Brett's little fake defeated laugh at 1:28 ;-D I just they'd showed the revelation in his mind at seeing the thumbprint a bit more clearly. :D In the book Watson noticed something in the way he said "yes it is final." Holmes did want to string Lestrade along a bit to get back at him for being so cocky :P One of the best conclusions to any of the Holmes stories.
Here's what Holmes says in the short story (although, wouldn't the difference between charred rabbit/animal remains be very different to those of a human?)
"By the way, what was it you put into the woodpile besides your old trousers? A dead dog, or rabbits, or what? You won't tell? Dear me, how very unkind of you! Well, well, I daresay that a couple of rabbits would account both for the blood and for the charred ashes. If ever you write an account, Watson, you can make rabbits serve your turn."
In the original story, the builder does indeed make a wax impression from the seal, thus making a false fingerprint. However, in this program he simply presses the sealing wax to the wall, which obviously would result in a mirror image.
Totally agree!

I love the 'Sherlock's off snooping' music at about 1:50... the pizz lower strings and off the string upper is soooo atmospheric!
Thanks for posting :)

I don't like the beaten look of Holmes in this. If I remember it correctly, didn't Holmes have a whole library of finger prints?

I hoped for another magnificient "nevertheless" of Holmes, after Lestrade said "there is nothing up there, though". None this time, pity.. :-))

Lestrade should be quiet and look at his shoes whenever Holmes is around, he'd embarass himself less.

"Oh we can do better than that."
The Yarders are absolutely hopeless.
I like Watson's look of, 'Just do what Holmes says. It's easier that way.'

Ha ha. You're right, even when he says, "Put a match to that straw." Ha ha.

Yeah, but thet screwed up the thumbprint bit....using the sealing wax directly would result in a mirror image
jlim2397 2 years ago 3
but you can make an artifical fingerprint. I've seen them do it in CSI
