@xxgg55 I agree about everything you said apart from the last bit! You can't really say Joe bonamassa plays faster than him because if you listen to some of his blues covers, he shows that he can play just as fast as him! And he's probably faster up and down the neck than Joe, I love both these guitarists and they both are influences to me so don't get me wrong! Sorry for the rant....
Rene Martinez is a wonderful (Flamengo) guitarist and musician in his own right, I saw him open for Stevie Ray Vaughan on a couple of dates during the '86 European Tour.
On one date he performed Little Wing together with SRV @ Vredenburg, Utrecht, September 21, 1986.
I went backstage after a John Mayer concert last year and ran into Rene. nobody else was paying attention to him, but I was totally amazed. to have met someone who worked with SRV and now works with JM is an honor!
there´s no one right now who can play better than john mayer? (Leaving out obviously the all time masters like clapton) Come on dude... JOE BONAMMASSA. He can trasj mayer any day
@hungerstriker27 JB is exceptional but JM doesn't always show his cards. You gotta catch him live to see him operate. If you've seen him than nice! If not I hope you do someday! Ive seen him 3 times and he's failed to disappoint. I was fortunate to catch Voodoo Child during one of them! /watch?v=Pphe3SPtyUQ
The link to the right is a cover of Mercy /watch?v=oJBegAYVYoA
Watch both cause they really show his true prowess. I love JB but you (like most people) just need to get to know the real JM.
@hungerstriker27 Sorry to add hah, but Rene Martinez really is a wizard of his craft. When you watch him cover JMs rig he (RM) explains it all like they're his toys. /watch?v=F6POSqjjrIA Heres a vid of RM doing a Rig Rundown w/PremierGuitar(dot)com. When you watch most other techs do these vids, they sound like they're spitballing their way thru. My point is RM knows what/who he's dealing with. I'm sure he knows JB but he wouldn't just say this about JM; he tech'd for SRV for Christ's Sake haha!
@hungerstriker27 But listen man, don't get me wrong by this little rant of mine; I completely respect your opinion; I'm just defending mine as well haha.
@hungerstriker27 Joe B. is extremely talented and a great bluesman, but he just plays the same style of blues mostly and isn't really that innovative. Mayer has such incredible taste and originality with licks and tone that is truly unmatched, whether or not Joe B. can play faster than Mayer.
John Mayer has the best of the best. You won't find a nicer or more knowledgable guy than Rene. I had the pleaseure of spending many months on a tour bus with this guy and lots of fond memories. Blessings to you and your family, Rene.

If any of you have the SRV Box Set there is an interview with Rene in the book. Talks alot about his days on the road with Stevie and the crazy stuff he did to the guitars over the years. Pretty cool. John knows how to pick them!
he has a nice webpage in which he goes in detail of how he got toghether with many other artist, hes worked with carlos santana, princ, ofcouse SRV, JM, and other, has tech advise Ect. pretty cool page! id recomend if your into his work, this guys a genius when it comes to guitars, and guitar tone... IMHO
yeah...very cool. i think rene started out with charlie first in the music shop they had...stevie said in interviews every guitarist went to charlies shop in dallas...how amazing is it to see the man part responsible for stevies king tone!!! plus for others on here..rene didnt compare john and stevie at any point in that interview..how could he possibly??....however i do agree with him about john...mayer is defo legend material!!
Speed has nothing to do with it you idiots... By the way, as far as techs go, Rene is top shelf, period.
