How to transfer Google Earth Routes to a Garmin GPS

I admire this function where you draw out your routes on the laptop and send it to the GPS. Do you know if it matters on the gps either it be basemap or do I need something else to operate this function?

@stjernefodt So I'd just have to buy a sourcemap, then download the mapinstall from garmin website, plug in with USB, and it'll work. Tell me if I missed anything. There are many sourcemaps. is the Topo 2008 CD considered a sourcemap (will this cd allow me to transfer routes to GPS)?

how are you moving the map while you are drawing the route? i somehow cant do that.

@Sarels It should work on most portable Garmins that use MapSouce. I have also tested it on a Garmin GPSMAP 76Cx and it works fine on it too.

Once it's on the GPS device, how do you use it? I have a nuvi 255W and I can't find routes in there anywhere.

Well on my Garmin eTrex Legend, there's an option called Routes. I just select that and choose any route that's available, and the GPS does the rest.

I think that you will find that this will only work with plotter type Garmind such as Etrex, Gecko, 296 atc - ie walking or aviation units which usw coordinate based waypoints. Nuvis etc calculate their routes differently within their street database.
