  • Hay Jim plz plz add more vids, I hope you have not given up :( because of a few trolls

  • Hi Jim, based on your years of servicing aquariums what can you tell me about cell cast acrylic aquariums? More specifically is it true that over time acrylic will become dull and will need to be polished every "x" amounts of years?

  • hey N, aside from a vague idea as to how Cell Cast acrylic is made I dont really know much more about it. I do know it is what is prefered for aquariums. your cleaning methods and the fish will actually determine how "dull" it gets. personally, dull or scuffed I thing an acrylic aquarium is more attractive than a glass tank, and acrylic tanks dont drip salt crust.

  • Jim,

The Santa Monica algae scrubbers are no longer for sale. Do you know of any other units that are commercially available?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • hey MM, I am not sure what SM Scrubbers is doing. he can still have the units made but has to order them in quantity...and for whatever reason has not done so. no, I do not know of an alternative.

  • hello Jim. i used to have a alge problem until i used the product from RED SEA NO3PO4X. this product reduces NO3 and PO4 without any side effects. The down side is that u have to add every day. but if u have a dosing pump that should not be a problem. U can see results in less than a week. All my corals still have vivid colors. This is just a suggestion. I'm from europe-romania. And Jim, thumbs up for your videos!

  • Always remember Jim that there are hundreds of followers that appreciate your work! Sometimes a thankless job but I think I can speak on behalf of all and say thank you for all the hard work! If you don't mind....keep looking up and moving forward!

  • Looking forward to your next Algae scrubber video.

  • Jim, please tell me you won't turn your back on uploading videos. I know you want it to be a stepping stone, but please do keep it up. It will be so sad if it all comes to an end, even if something better comes along for you. Followed for years since episode 1. Love it. Never get tired of seeing your work. You are unique and fishkeepers on YouTube need you! Always look forward to your next vid. I wish they were more often but I also recognise it is not your main business.

  • hay new subscriber here how do I fix a scratched glass? also what kind of sand is good for a tank im frsh water tho :/

  • @EGXV Dude are you like three years old or something? You keep going around everything I said. There was nothing negative or hateful in my comment, I keep asking you if you actually read it because after all the responses you sent me, it seems like you haven't. If Jim takes offence to people giving him recommendations well then that's just stupid. But you got one thing right, I don't like Jim's videos anymore and I won't be watching. Have a nice day!

  • Lol..... In the marine aquarium ad it said senior and militarty ... Fail

  • hey T, yes it does say Senior ( citizens ) and Military ( personel ) get an admittance discount to the Marine Aquarium Expo show March 31 - April 1, 2012 at the OC Fair Grounds.

  • So whats wrong with Jim making a little profit from his videos? Congrats, he found a way to supplement his income. As far as you saying there is a lot of repeats, look at anything on tv its all repeats. Any reality based show is going to have repeated procedures, (The Bachelor, American Idol, Hells Kitchen) it's all the same in every episode. The tanks are different or are undergoing a new addition of some sort, and also I find Jim interesting. It's all subjective, and I like the show.

  • Jim, oxygen has nothing to do with algae growth (or it wouldn't grow on our rocks in the display tank, would it?). The more water flow the more nutrients the algae gets to eat and the faster it grows. Also, if you rough the screen up the algae can attach to it and grow faster. The final component of a successful scrubber is lots of light. On his message board Santa Monica advocates changing bulbs often, every two months or so, to maximize light to the screen.

  • Jim,did you ever try your hand at Discus in your early days of fishkeeping? Cheers

  • hey I, i tried Discus back in the late 80's. too tempemental and not enough action. been stickly SW since.

  • @lafishguy Cheers, I hear ya.

  • You know what I can't stand? People who nitpick how he does his videos. If Jim wants to upload 20 different videos of him petting his cat, he's allowed. Don't forget, this is youtube, he can do what ever he wants. and how he wants to do it. Try to find a better set of videos, with as much topical variety, you wont find it.

  • @buljo5150 Okay but your going beyond the point, it was simply a suggestion made to him by another YouTuber to just upload one video and stop rolling those ridiculous commercials in between each video. He only uploads more then one video to make more money on google adesense, if he had only one video he wouldn't make as much rather then if he had 3 videos which by the way are just repeats of the same thing we've seen in other videos. Its just so lame.

  • What's the deal with bashing the guy, if you don't like go some place else. Best feature about YouTube is the ability to delete people who hate and make the world a miserable place.

  • Jim Nice scrubber i like it, would you say its as good as the expensive ones? Is coralline a good or bad thing? Is the any pros and cons keeping it. What salinity do you keep this tank at it looked about 1.020 - 1.022? on your red sea hydro, Saying that its a fish only so i guess that's fine? Also a quick one why don't you make another scrubber then you can switch them over like your corals then soak the used one in bleach to easily rid all of the algae so its all ready for next time.

  • hey W, no its is not as effective as a SM Algae Scrubber, coraline is usually associated with a reef tank, and it is then in varioations of a purple color. its usually the elevated calcium level, spurred on by the addition of strontium, that really encouages it. its a look-thing. yes 1.022 and probly more of a FOWLR with an anemone and mushrooms. since all the algae I am growing on the screen takes two weeks, and its not much I am OK with just scrapping it.

  • If you don't like Jim's vids don't watch! You Tube means you can present your story the way YOU want. I'm grateful Jim takes the time to share his work with us. Thank you Jim and keep moving forward...

  • I can't help but notice you are servicing a client that clearly has some $ to afford a little more technology on his/her reef. Not that your scrubber isn't a work of art, lol. And by the way, your videos are just fine, tell your story the way you like lafishguy, and keep on moving forward!

  • Jim, Curious on what the theory is behind getting rid of the coraline algae?

  • hey T, my first suggestion is to stop adding calcium supplements. like any other algae you need to stop feeding it what it likes...and that may involve more than you are willing to do...such as turning out the lights.

  • @lafishguy Jim, i think you misunderstood what i was asking. You show scraping the coraline algae off the back wall of the aquarium. I was wondering what the theory was on doing this? Coraline is usually very desirable and will actually help uptake the nutrients and compete w/ the unsightly filiment algae. Why not encourage it, instead of get rid of it?

  • hey T, the customer does not want a 'spotty' tank backside, and while it is calcerous algae it was not very attractive....and besides, its not really a reef tank.

  • i agree with L and F... i like your videos very much, most of the time they are very educational, but the number of videos and ads are annoying. if you dont want criticism of your videos dont put them in the public eye to be viewed. Theres also and old saying that goes: “To escape criticism – do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.”

  • hey Z, there is a cost to producing and watching these videos. goodbye.

  • @JacobsAquarium This is about learning different techniques in fish keeping I do not understand why there seems to be an argument about uploading videos on YouTube. If the guy wants to upload it in parts, then so be it. It does not matter what his agenda is behind it, it's his own content. Lets get back to learning more about the hobby we all enjoy.

  • @pimpjuice739 the thing is we aren't learning much when all he talks about is the same thing over and over again, in each of these videos a good five minutes in each one was him telling us about cleaning the glass, which is very elementary and redundant.

  • @floore2 Thank you for saying that. Its so true, he just keeps repeating the same thing over and over again. I'm not watching his videos anymore, I'd rather watch tanked on Animal planet. Much better.

  • @floore2

How much did you pay to watch this video?

  • hey J, appearantly you have more than one account as you are LuckyBamboo as well? you need to learn your place! I do not create these videos for you and I do not do 'request' videos. I have strived to be 'positive' in my videos and when you make a negative comment once and its considered a suggestion, make the same comment over and over and over....is just being a jerk. goodness gracious, if you dont like it go somewhere eles!

  • @lafishguy Once again, I loved your videos and was not trying to be negative at all. I am a positive person myself. And in respect to you, I wish you nothing but the best and I will just not watch your videos anymore. Good luck and take care. Bye.

  • J, will continue my multi-part format as that's how I started four years ago and I see no reason to change now. I suspect most viewers will sit for 10 minutes, but with a 30 minute+ video you need to schedule time for that. currently these new HD videos are 4.5 GigaBits per 10 or 20 minute part. that's huge! anything bigger, file size, is too risky and too complicated to work with. I am also trying learn this new Avid Studio software, which is a serious step up from Pinnacle Studio.

  • @lafishguy Jim, people love your videos and no matter if you upload them in parts or not, there going to spend the same amount of time watching them. Weather its three videos or one video, no matter what viewers will spend the same amount of time watching the episode if it was just one video. So that's irrelevant, second I've uploaded 20GB files on my partnership channel with no problems at all.

  • J, what use to take two or three nights now takes a week to just edit and another 3 days to upload. LA Fishguys is a forth business that I juggle along with others and it brings in very little money but its time requirements are beginning to intrude into my other three businesses that do make money. I have always strived to be 'positive' in all my videos and will not tolerate negativity. those who are negative will be removed or blocked. you may think this is a public forum but it is not.

  • J, my whole point of these videos is hopefully to use You Tube as a stepping stone to something better, whether that be acting, voice overs, filming, scripting or producing. I am going about it as I would expect a hollywood producer to do. your comment about the Executive Producer, which is usually an honorary title, was given to Frank Gari...the owner of Gari Communications who has contributed all the music at no cost to me. I am truely appreciative of his contribution to LA Fishguys.

  • J, I do not appreciate your attempts to sabotage LA Fishguys with your negative comments or that whiny little video you sent me. come on, grow up and move along. If you wanted to apologize thats what you should have said, but to continue to tell me how to do my videos? J, thanks for your suggestion but it went in one ear and out the other. if I fail its my own decission and for my own reasons, not yours! I am moving forward, you should do the same,... there is no need to come back.

  • @lafishguy Jim, don't let one mindless youtuber effect you so much. We all have haters somewhere. Just a thought.

  • saltwater algae is grody... Go freshwater

  • im not liking the ads...

  • Looks like its working Jim good luck .

  • Great episode Jim! I'm going to give this a try as opposed to vsv dosing.

  • Jim is that your MACNA I. D. Badge? lol! I used a toothbrush to get all the little particles out of the the screen works pretty well.

  • I gotta agree with luckybamboo here, not that I don't appreciate your videos Jim and all the work you let us in on, but was there really a need for three videos at over a combined 45 minutes on this subject. I mean if you look at each video all that really happens is the exact same thing with no real diversity. keep up the work though I just feel like the ball was dropped on these videos and that they aren't at the level they could be.

  • hey F, the first two parts are one visit, the third part is a seperate follow-up two weeks later showing the first results of the screen....there is an old saying, never look a gift-horse in the mouth, goodbye.

  • Hey Jim. You could secure the spray bar against the tub with some zip tie to help keep the spray "T" upright.

  • Is it ok to stir up the substrate like that?

  • hey J, i dont think I did much stirring-up, but I do vacuum it every other week and it is not intended to be a live filter bed.

  • why don't people stop cusin jim on what he does

this man knows what he doing and i respect all of his hard work

you should count yourself lucky that LAFISHGUY share his information with you guys

iv truely found all of his videos very helpful

    big thumps up to lafishguy

thank you jim fo the FANTASTIC vids and help you've gave us

  • Jim,

Just curious: I'm a new hobbyist so please forgive my ignorance, but I've noticed that when adding water to a SW tank, you never seem to worry about the temperature difference between the tank and new water. Is it because the volume of new water compared to the tank is not large enough to make a "sudden" change in overall tank temp (especially when you factor in the sump volume)?

  • hey H, I guess it is because here in LA the weather and temperature are usually around 70 +/- a few degrees....I think 'jaded' is the word :)

  • The puffer seems quite the observant fellow.

  • hey P, you mean the Long Horn Cowfish?

  • @lafishguy

Aye. I don't know my saltwater friends very well, seems I mistook this boxfish for a puffer. At 2:36 he sure seems interested in what you are doing.

    -Cheers

  • hey P, oh yes those LH Cowfish are quite curious...and it usually involves them nipping me at some point.

  • not sure if you had or not, but ive seen that the screen can be roughed up before installing to better gather algae. roughing it up on concrete scratching it up as much as possible will help also. plus slits in the tubes where the screen can fit into not holes would add more surface being watered.

  • Hi Jim. You have many years of experience and learning behind you so I wouldn't have the cheek to advise, but as an observation do you think the algae scrubber is big enough for that sized tank? I know space is limited, but would it be better to somehow increase the size of the scrubbing area?

Love the videos. Grateful you respond to comments. Best wishes from the UK and we're moving forward with you!

  • By the way, my response was directed at L's wayward response and your so eloquent reply.

  • hey J, please have a look at my horizontal ATS and please comment

  • Hi Jim, I've read that Convict Tangs are great algae eaters. Maybe one would help the algae problem?

  • hey S, never had had any luck with Convict Tangs, and I doubt if they will consume hair alage...besides, there would be no Algae Filter episode if the Tang did work.

  • Isn't this just a repeat of part two? I know you upload one video in multiple parts to gain more views and revenue on adsense, but now its kinda getting irritating to see the same thing in every episode. Why not just make one video and make it easier for your viewers to watch? You are a YouTube partner and you can upload more then 30 minutes of video if you wanted....

  • hey L, please dont tell me how to tell my story.

  • @lafishguy Aloha Jim,

I couldn't have said it better myself! Please keep up the good work! and thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and experiences, it truly does enhance and improve our profession and hobby.

    Aloha,

    Steve.

  • @lafishguy I wasn't telling you how to tell your story, that's completely beyond the point. I was trying to explain to you how much easier it would be to just watching one video, we all know why you upload more then one video. Its not a secret Jim.

  • hey L, you have no idea what my motivations are, and I do take insult to your suggestion that I am doing something sinister. we have butt heads previously and I do not wish to deal with this anymore as its a distraction. thanks for your comment, goodbye.

  • @LuckyBambooExpert Its the same episode, just a different part, you clearly have not watched part two either, this is very different. Plus, uploading episodes in parts, like Jim does is much easier because it uploads faster, episodes are easier to edit, and help the viewer with buffering.You-Tube is a user generated site, Jim can upload his videos in any dam way he chooses.

  • good vid jim here over in the uk algae scrbbers have become very popular with some good reviews only part of your vid what made me skip a heart beat is when you used a swing arm to test the S.G of the tank they are all ways wrong and all ways give a wrong reading i my self use a d&d short scale refractometer and has all ways gived me a proper reading from the start.

  • hey R, somebody always has to bring up the hydrometer issue....yes there are some that are historically inaccurate, but what I have works fine me and has for many years.

  • curious that the owner doesnt want add corals but yet has mushies and a nem, strange to me

  • hey W, you folks read way too much into these video stories. the mushies and anemone are from its past reef days. they are the remaining living corals. I dont think the owner cares what I do with the tank as long as it does not cost much money and it looks good....its also an opportunity to learn from the results.

  • what do you guys do with your tanks when you get a power outage for a couple days, here on the east cost last year a hurricane took out our power for a couple of days whipping out my 20 long reef and most of my 55 reef

  • hey S, fortunately, we do not have extended power outages or the weather that causes them, unless its an earthquake...which occurred back in '94 and I used battery operated air pumps. I now have a generator....but only a one gallon can of 5 year old gas :)

  • @lafishguy yeah i guess your lucky i plan on buying a solar panneled air pump for ponds and just stick it into my reef that way there is always some oxygen in the tank

  • Hi Jim, how effective is this Algae scrubber...I might consider to put one up for my own system although I probably will use a much bigger screen

  • @pmoney070783 Im looking at fitting/building an algae scrubber too... from what ive read online the trick to them seems to be the flow and having tons of light. Rather than the size of the screen

  • hey P, they do work but it depends on how bad the sitaution is to start with. I am filming my own hair-algae tank and its been 4 months with a noticeable improvement....and a couple of issues.

  • @lafishguy Do you think that they will be able to replace phos removers like Rowaphos when they are well established?

  • hey S, two different methods requiring two different applications.

  • Excellent video. By the way you must be making a small fortune. Good for you!!!

  • @lafishguy because in the 3 vids you just recently just uploaded to your channel I didn't see him once in the tank

  • hey I, he is there, look harder, he is a shy and dark colored fish

  • yea that house is so small you is it only 4 times my apartment at 700 square feet

hey jim do u leave the lights on 16 hours a day to get the most amount of light in there it will only grow when the lights are on

  • hey J, yes the lights are on for a number of hours, and on opposite when the tank lights are on.

  • Small house... lol

  • @lafishguy did the chevron tang in that tank die?

  • hey I, the Cheveron Tang is still there, why do you ask?
