Since this video was posted, Detroit has become the Tech hub of the Midwest. IT professionals are being hired and IT positions are being created at the rate of 85%, that is higher than even Silicon Valley at the moment.

Then the element of crime came in as with any big city. The people with money moved outward and the people with less money moved inward bringing more crime... The industry workforce shrinking or the industry moving away as in Gary, Indiana's case creates unwanted areas because people simply don't have the resources.

@h0tube Nah there are much worse parts of Detroit; Brightmoor, 7 Mile, Highland Park, Delray... Parts of 8 Mile get pretty bad but not as bad as some of the neighborhoods in the city.
If I'm not mistaken previous to living in the trailer park Eminem lived down 8 Mile towards Van Dyke (end of the video) which is a bad neighborhood but not the worst. Most of Detroit is just ghettos, but if you search around youtube you'll find some videos of the worst neighborhoods

8 mile isn't a bad road itself. It's just that it's the border to the bad areas. The deeper in you go, the worse it gets. Go north of 8 mile and it gets nicer and nicer, go south of it and it gets worse and worse.
Eminem used 8 mile for his movie because he probably spent a lot of time around there. I went to the same high school as he did and I lived at 9 and van dyke. I believe he lived a bit south of me, which would put him near 8 mile.
8 mile and Norwood, by the Light Guard Armory is where Grandma stays!! I remember sitting on the corner in 67' watching the tanks roll by and the Helo's landing in the field. F'n National Guard with M1's patrolling the streets while the F'n place went up in ashes... Looks the same as it did that day.

The city (besides downtown) is dead. The suburbs are still thriving that is where the capitalism is. Detroit was built on capitalism and destroyed by socialism. Look at Grand Rapids, it is also thriving. It is also the "red" part of the state.
