Is it under warranty? If so, demand a replacement! BE INSISTENT! Apple won't just do it if you're not adamant about it. Keep booking appointments and taking it in and tell them you're going to keep taking this machine in until they exchange it for you! Call Apple Care over the phone, explain to the person that the genius is not helping, ask the person to put a manager on the line and explain how unhappy you are. Trust me, Apple is good, but you have to insist a lot.
I literally brought a new macbook pro a month ago, mines just started to make this noise... Luckily Apple have said they will look at it and I'm hoping they fix it.
Wonder if you guys can help me, i had a screen replaced due to a broken hinge on my 15 inch macbook pro. However I'm noticing a very very very quiet grinding noise not even sure its a grinding noise, when i open my mac past 90 degrees and close it again?? is a mac meant to make some noise at the hinges?? I have the 2011 model i7
Yeah i just got my macbook pro like 2 weeks ago and whenever a pick it up a little too quickly or just close the screen like you did on the video it makes that same noise. The open and closing noise doesn't bother me too much but i read online on some of the apple care pages that the clicking noise it makes when u pick it up could be something with the HDD
@UTUBE3JC That noise is completely normal. The HD has a mechanism for parking the read/write head when it senses movement, to protect the disc surface from damage. Basically, whenever it senses sudden movement, it quickly switches off the HD for a second to prevent damage to your data. Nothing to worry about, it's a feature, not an issue. It's supposed to make a noise, that's how you know it's working.
Just don't do uP and down 100 times a day, it wil cause a serious damage to the screen and to the case. In 5 macbook that i've look there was this "problem", it's only a little sound!
google this: "fix ticking clicking sound in macbook pro unibody", the only solution i found... i haven't removed it yet, but i'm really thinking about it...
I had the same problem except my clicked louder and only once. I sent it in to one of the Apple authorised centre in my area, they had a look at it and lubricated the hinges. It stopped clicking after that.
@Beatlesfan1225 I have that problem but it seems to be normal. I have taken it in to apple a week after i bought it and they said that's a normal clicking sound but i beg to differ. i think they were just to lazy to replace my MB.. I had my comp for a year now and it still bothers me to this day...it sucks
I have the same problem, I havent taken it to Apple "Genius Bar" yet because a lot of people said that they wont help you with this screen hinge problem. I'm soooo pissed.
Your problem maybe a bit different then the one everbody is talking about, but in some way it looks similar. So I suggest that your try this to fix this ANNOYING PROBLEM (I feel your pain).
Enter this in Google: "how to fix ticking clicking sound in macbook pro unibody", first link should be the one with the same title.
this bothers me a lot. When i open the screen... as soon as i let go and it comes forward a little i get a click like that. I also noticed if i feel along the plastic above the F keys on my macbook pro it feels like the plastic is bent out near the right.. where the clicking noise is coming from! And it has never been dropped and is not that old.. whats going on??
After investigating a little bit more, I found out that the noise is coming from the black hinge-clutch plastic cover. The plastic becomes brittle due to the extended exposure to heat exhausted from the central area of the notebook where the airflow exhaust fans vent hot air from the computer’s processor. Resource intensive applications like Skype video chat, iMovie, Youtube HD video are some application that cause the notebook to heat up too much.
I get the same noise. This isn't much big of a deal, just a sign of aging. But Apple should definitely look into this. It is a sure sign of poor design and cheap material usage.
@silluii They don't acknowledge it's a design flaw. They're too busy drooling over their enormous profit margin, even though they remain below 13% of the overall computer market.
This just happened to my 13" uMBP, I took it to the apple store, the tech said that they can't just replace the hinge, rather, they have to replace the whole screen. Luckily it was under warranty. I don't mind either, the top had an unsightly scratch that I rather my MBP didn't have anymore =3
The hinge-clicking thing is really common on Apple's unibody machines. I had a unibody macbook (before they were re-branded 'pro') and the hinge clicked like that from day 1. Now I have a 15" MBP. The first few months there wasn't any clicking, but nowadays the hinge clicks sometimes when opened / closed. It's probably going to end up as common an issue as the white macbook discolouration or magnet crack issue. It's probably because the hinge is the only plastic component of the outer shell.
ok i just opened the back lid and closed it really carefully and tight, i made sure all screws are without any tension due to the lid and suddenly the ckracking is gone.
@silluii i have the same thing on mine... but only when i pick it up, it seems to be the aluminium from the cover moving a little... the noise is quiet but distinct, like a high pitch clicking.
I notice that there was 2 small clips beside the RAM inside of the macbook that holds the center "case/ lid" maybe that was the cause of the noise... i am not sure exactly why the macbook makes the click noise but try open the back and check it out and see if it works... i know that it doesn't make sense but give it a try ....
hey man i had the same problem with my new macbook pro .. the click noise started the second day i got it.. but i fixed it but not sure how. I open the back of my new macbook and check if there was any loose parts and it was fine everything was solid. when i put the "back lid" back on, the sound was gone!
just turn up the music so it'll fade out

Well, it's not a luxurious Swiss watch. Assembly has some margins (in mm).
One thing I can tell you is that there's nothing to worry about.

I guess this is 'like' a DS, cause when you pull the DS top back it has this tick sound which supports it from flopping down. I'm not sure.
