why do you have (JACO PASTORIUS) in the title? Was that suposed to sound like Jaco? because it didnt! It sounded like you need to work on your "groove" it sounded way stiff like you was having a hard time with the notes. Did you just start playing? cause if thats the case then it wasnt to bad~but you have a long way to go before you can even start to compare yourself to Jaco!
@m1kk3l2 Oh wow so that was suposed to be (birdland) geez almighty that sounded rough my god please!!! And I know all about how Jaco took his frets off way back when he was playing onthe circuit. This cat aint got no groove!! He really needs to take Jaco's name out of the title!!
@ded1454 Or he can write, that it's his own version of the song that's been mentioned.. :)
.. But in gaetanoortos defence I would say, it's a tough song (I play the bass myself, and have been doing that for about seven years..), and I don't think, that I'm good enough for just begin playing this..
.. I have a six string bass myself too.. Soo.. .:)
@Radibass Yep, there's plenty of 12-string bass guitars out there and even basses with more than 12. Trust me, 5 or 6 strings is nothing. And yeah, it's progress in my opinion. A guitar with 7 strings will never be the same as a bass guitar with 7 strings, even if only tone-wise.
In German Genug ist Genug -- Enough is enough! If you are an electric Bass player in a band, be happy to be the musical bottom end. Damn! If you need more - learn guitar!
@elachie You realize you could also take the option to go for LOWER strings, right? In Dutch we have a saying "leven en laten leven", which roughly translated is something like "live and let live".
The debate on "4 string vs 4+" is really simple. If you need the access to more notes, get 5 or 6 string. If you're comfortable with less notes availible, play a 4 string.
I personally play a 4 string bass and I don't feel like I need anything more.
About the vid, pretty cool, that's pretty much the same I do with my bass, just sit around and play whatever's on my mind.
@monkeyman2812 it is a well known fact and somewhat of a cliche when they "the best bassist play in the pocket". why would you wanna be all over a 10 inch wide fretboard. 2 octaves are more perfect for playing the bass guitar. theres other instruments in a band that carry out the function of the 5,6,7 and 8th string. if having more strings was better than 4 strings then how come those same people we look up to play 4 strings? play more strings could also be an ego thing you never know
@monkeyman2812 four strings in my opinion are more than enough for the bass guitar to carry out its function in music. the bass is beautiful and i wouldnt trade it for no other instrument. 4 strings are all u need to thump, pluck and groove. when you feel the need to add a 5th and a 6th string then you wanna play guitar.
i've never understood bassist who shred on the bass guitar with a pick and people deem them great for playing the bass as if it was a guitar. 2 different instruments mate
@monkeyman2812 the legend is usually an innovator, genius, exceptional or has a certain characteristic that sets him/her apart from the thousand and thousands of those practicing the same trade. clarke, zender, bootsy, graham etc all used four strings for a reason not because they couldnt think of adding more strings to a bass guitar.
a lot of bassist try to play the bass as if it was a guitar, play the bass for its function in the band and enjoy it :)
@hekoka the fifth is the B string to get a LOW growl and the 6th is the C string which is for light tone dude don't be dumb the use of these things can be know by a bass player not some random guy with his stupid opinion GODAMIT?!!!!!!!!
@hekoka Haha, I see your perspective, but that just shows how limited people think about music, let alone instruments ;) Of course someone who thinks the 4 string as the be all and end all, is going to think anything more than that as 'outrageous', without realising that its not merely, a 4 string with extra strings, but a whole instrument unto itself. And incredibly versatile. Sounds like you need to check out some different music my friend :) Ill never own a 4 string again after playing 5 +
is your warwick bolt on or a 3 peaice non bolt on , and 6 strings is to much

@ded1454 It's because it's a song from Weather Report called Birdland, where Jaco plays this ;)
- And nobody canplay as Jaco did, 'cause he had a fretless bass (Which was done by himself with butterknife..)
.. And simply just because he just was an incredibly amazing bassplayer!

Guys,i thing this debate is pointless!!!Don't forget that it's only a matter of taste and needs!!!It's just a progress and nobody can stop it!!!

forgive me for saying this but a 6 string bass looks ridiculous imo
even jaco himself used a 4 string
a 5 string is pushing it but a 6-7 string is outrageous
just my humble opinion
hekoka 1 year ago
your opinion is right but you see no use in the fifth nor the sixth string
gaetanoorto 1 year ago
@gaetanoorto then why abuse the 6 string?
a 6 string bass is a beautiful instrument for those who are willing to expand their sound and style what-not.
just because famous players use 4 strings it doesnt mean that professionals can't use 4+ strings.
i do agree that 7+ string is going a bit far though, you are trying to achieve the same frequencies as a guitar.
6 and below strings remain true to the bass guitar sound.

@hekoka I assume you've never heard a proper use of an extended range bass. They do look ridiculous, though.
