She was an opera singer. When African- Americans opera singers sing Negro spirituals we bring more of our dialect and inflections into the songs. You are allowed that freedom in spirituals because its a part of the culture of that music. Yet Negro spirituals are considered a part of the classical art form.
Interesting how operatic she is, and yet at one point she sounds more like a Gospel singer. She starts and ends with rolling r's and an almost European sound, but in the middle she sounds very "Southern Black Spiritual". But beautiful and a beautiful choice of wording.
An accomplished singer..... very professional, polished. Opera trained - no doubt. Love it!!!! Thanks to You-Tube I can listen to all these in one evening! Having a Mini concert of all these famous talents! Glory be to God.
They should have cloned Marian Anderson to preserve her genetic gifts (which she worked hard to develop and utilize) but anyway her nephew has been conductor I believe of the Portland, Oregon, symphony. Her choice of music shows excellent judgment too.
@MooeyMcQuack416 agree, Contralto means the range and Ms. Anderson was a Contralto of impeccable tone and range bar none so your fyi is for what again!
Oh lord, how have I never heard of Marian Anderson? Now I have a new project to find more of this incredible music. Thank you, Dick Cavett, for bringing Marian Anderson to my attention, and thanks to whomever uploaded this video!
im 12, and i had to read 2 books for school, i chose this as one of them. the book was marian anderson: a voice that challenged a nation. it made me cry.....lol im serious......haha i love singing and that book inspired me SO much!!!! i love her voice haha -Carly :]
If there is any tinge of racisim in that performance is that it was done in television at at time when producers expected black women to sing in a style reminiscent of a Negro Spiritual. Dennis
Like in the 50's, in america, black women were expected to sing one of three things:
gospel
blues
jazz
But of course she sang gospel because she enjoyed it but that was also stereotypical.
It is not racist just an observance of stereotypes in the 1950's, I mean I could say now that black people are expected to be good at basket ball. I dont believe it but it is a similar occurence.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I have heard of Marian Anderson my entire life, but had never actually heard her sing. I learned something today, and you enriched my life with this upload. Thank you very much.
I'm not under the impression you know what "racist" means. Please, look that word up and internalize its definition and application before you go hurling it at people.
You are so racist so be quiet please u don't know what you're talking about okay. Take your undercover racist rants somewhere else you no-talent. You probably like no talents like britney spears and others. You need to take a history lesson and get a brain and an ear for music which u clearly don't have.
what kind of a twisted person you are ,have you any idea what this woman achieved and what she had to go through to get there.People like you should not be allowed on you tube.Ignorant and hatefull you are
WOW THIS IS AMAZING^_^
