For some reason this a/c reminds me of the old F-8 crusaders, I guess it is that huge nozzle coming out of her back end. Which reminds me that the F-8 was the last single engine USN fighter before the JSF. Is this thing so reliable that navy brass decided to give up on the long held tradition of twin engine fighters? Or was it rammed down their throats, almost like a bad kharma version of the F4?

@Gl3nnman yea, i think so, because the F-35 isn't supposed to have a HUD. and the cockpit looks tight which is also a characteristic of the F-16. so i think you're right.
@DeathbyDakota The point of having a plane hover is that it can reach places and land/take off in places only helicopters can. This combined with the ability to attack at greater speeds from a further distance and having a longer range makes an aircraft with VTOL capabilities much better than a helicopter.
I think some of the guys in the US navy are upgrading its F-18s to prove it is just as good as this one if not better. Single engine is just not reliable over water and for the money it is just a joke. Avionics can be put on the F-18 just the same and acheive better manuverbility.
I really don't understand how this plane is supposed to be stealthy. So many rounded areas and huge flat surfaces. Seems like all stealth should be lost when it turns.

E' un aereo fantastico e, anche se posso essere moralmente daccordo con chi ne disapprova l'acquisto, dico che bisognerebbe però spiegare bene come in realtà stanno i fatti. Questo programma, al quale l'Italia aderisce per una piccola ma significativa percentuale, garantisce 300.000 posti di lavoro. Io sono un appassionato di questi aerei, dal f14 al f22 al f35, anche gli shukoi russi sono belli, tuttavia questi aerei vengono utilizzati per la maggior parte per ricognizioni, (perchè non siamo mica in un conflitto mondiale) mentre per spionagio è meglio usare i droni senza pilota. The F-22 is the Gold Standard, but was killed because it simply costs too much to field in any numbers. A fighter is only worthwhile if it can actually be deployed, something other countries are finding out when they tried to match the F-22 and ran into huge cost overruns. The F-35 is the best "practical" modern fighter in the world, period.

Can it take off vertically and then move forward into translational flight, and back again?....... How many videos of the F-22 have you seen flying around with AIM-9s and AMRAAMS hanging out of its bays? Why would they even do that? Ask yourself this; would the US and UK spend so much money to replace both counties' aging Harriers if it couldn't? Why would they spend five times the money on a weapon with less capability?

This means it needs a runway to take off....allways. It cant do a transition from the hover into forward flight. If it could, it would carry VTOL on its fins....ok? @slapyousilly3 The Harriers thrust config is very different, it has 4 Nozzles plus lateral nozzles at the tips and a considerably larger diameter Turbofan. This is why its subsonic...The F35 may well get from forward flight back into the Hover. This is easier than going from the Hover into translational flight...When you get a clip...show me by all means, but I wont hold my breath while you do it....:)
@EnglishTurbines Well i will admit i am yet to find a video of the F-35 doing what the harrier can do, the most i found was a 3d rendering but i know that don't count so you might be right about this plane not being very good, personally i like the F-22 better , may be expensive and not hover but you can tell just by looking at its performance how it outdoes the F-35 in almost every way , i think obamas cancelling of the Raptor to make way for the JSF was a mistake
@slapyousilly3 I did not say the F35 was no good, Comparing it to Harrier is insane anyway, Harrier is 40yrs old, and a ground attatck VTO aircraft. F35 is capable of 1200mph, Harrier 650mph, very different...The F35 is multirole, F22 air defence..comparing these aircraft is pointless, each has its own strengths. The F35 is a more atractive package though, due to its Multifunction.
It's not as maneuverable and not as fast as the older aircraft. Not as good a thrust ratio.
F-35 does have stealth in its arsenal which the older aircraft did not, but there already exists technology which lights ups stealth aircraft like Christmas lights, and more countries are likely to acquire this technology in the near future.
If nothing else F-35 is a good replacement for the night-hawk and the harrier.
It's not meant to be manoeuverable, that's the job of the F-22. The F-35 is supposed to be cheap and thus numerous, and competent at air-to-air combat against 5th generations and good at attacking ground targets as well, and to use overwhelming numbers to compensate for any shortcomings.
F35 vs the F22. Both are great, but we will hear and see more F35's because the F22 program is capped and "might" be totally scrapped. Why? We don't have the money for expensive projects like this.

Second! The project costs a lot of money but it is an international project. And by doing this project we would save a lot of money from buying seperate aircrafts like A-10s, F-18s, and 15s which you couldn't get through your thick skull. And this would help the economy going as we will sell this aircraft to other nations because they are very interested in it.
F-35 is a multirole fighter. Do you have any idea on how much money this will save in the military budget?? No longer will we need a company to waste money and get loans on making a F-15 type 2. For some reason this a/c reminds me of the old F-8 crusaders, I guess it is that huge nozzle coming out of her back end. Which reminds me that the F-8 was the last single engine USN fighter before the JSF. Is this thing so reliable that navy brass decided to give up on the long held tradition of twin engine fighters? Or was it rammed down their throats, almost like a bad kharma version of the F4?

This combined with the ability to attack at greater speeds from a further distance and having a longer range makes an aircraft with VTOL capabilities much better than a helicopter.

I think some of the guys in the US navy are upgrading its F-18s to prove it is just as good as this one if not better. Single engine is just not reliable over water and for the money it is just a joke. Avionics can be put on the F-18 just the same and acheive better manuverbility.

The US has 10 times as many people in it so as a percentage we have an Armed Forces ROUGHLY about 10 times smaller than the US.
When called upon though we step up to the plate. In WWII we only had 10 million people but still managed to put 1 million of them in Uniform.

Quindi gli F35 e gli F22 Craptor "partivano" avvantaggiati, se non fosse che pero' gli avversari li abbattevan ancora prima che potessero far qualcosa xD (raggio mayor missili Russi)
Inoltre l'F22 e' un progetto fallimentare su tutti gli aspetti. E' si' invisibile, ma deve tener il radar spento senno lo trackano XD, quindi e' una "sola".

E il T-50 (che e' la sua controparte us) a differenza dell'F-35 i radar che funzionan come dovrebbe far l'F-35 ce li ha, mentre gli F35 han dimostrato che non funzionan come dovrebbero :) con la diff. che col PAK in dogfight parti pure avvantaggiato.
Quindi l'F35 perde sia in long Range, sia in Dogfight, sia in stealth. A che serve quindi? XD

Aerei superiori, difese anti missili a 3 livelli di 2 generazioni sopra gli US, missili A-A F&F con range nettamente superiore ai range US, Sistemi di avionica 1 generazione avanti rispetto A-stealth US, costi dimezzati. E quando esportan che succede? ;)

Io sono un appassionato di questi aerei, dal f14 al f22 al f35, anche gli shukoi russi sono belli, tuttavia questi aerei vengono utilizzati per la maggior parte per ricognizioni, (perchè non siamo mica in un conflitto mondiale) mentre per spionagio è meglio usare i droni senza pilota. Il Nano dopo le minchiate libiche e russe del nano ha fatto passare l' EI da atteggiamento passivo ad attivo in afganistan e ha incrementato i soldati all'estero per evitare problemi con gli usa che poco garbano i dittatoruncoli dello stato delle banane. The F-22 is the Gold Standard, but was killed because it simply costs too much to field in any numbers. A fighter is only worthwhile if it can actually be deployed, something other countries are finding out when they tried to match the F-22 and ran into huge cost overruns. The F-35 is the best "practical" modern fighter in the world, period.

@motownmaniax Our 40 yr old Harrier can take off vertically from a small clearing in a Forest, can the F35? Can it take off vertically and then move forward into translational flight, and back again?....... I have not seen it do this....BTW..Im not looking for a F35 v Harrier argument, that would be stupid.

@EnglishTurbines How did this become a debate about the Harrier? Can the Harrier fly supersonic? Does the Harrier have the capability for multiple roles that "include" high performance interceptor? The Harrier is a great plane but as a fighter the F-35 blows it out of the water.

This is something the Harrier can do. The Harrier is a 40 yr old subsonic ground attatck aircraft, different role I know. The tax dollars the F35 costs, why cant it do this trick is all Im asking?

Just because YOU haven't seen it doesn't mean anything. What I've just told you is a well known fact that was even broadcasted on CNN when it happened.

Yes, I know it can VTO unloaded, and Hover, I like you have seen it in this clip..but it cant then transition into full speed forward flight from the Hover.....Show me a clip of it doing this is what Im asking....SHOW ME A CLIP....is all Im asking. Forgive me if I dont believe you just telling me it can do it.

@EnglishTurbines Any such clip of it showing an internal weapon's load is not yet released to the public. How many videos of the F-22 have you seen flying around with AIM-9s and AMRAAMS hanging out of its bays? Why would they even do that? Ask yourself this; would the US and UK spend so much money to replace both counties' aging Harriers if it couldn't? Why would they spend five times the money on a weapon with less capability?

@slapyousilly3 I dont need you to explain where the cold fan is, or how it works, as an engineer, I could give it you backwards and sideways. My understanding is, is that the F35 is STOL only. This means it needs a runway to take off....allways. It cant do a transition from the hover into forward flight. If it could, it would carry VTOL on its fins....ok? Some people on here are like you, they think it can, they like you are wrong.

@slapyousilly3 When they make this proposed variant for our Navy which I imagine they will insist on it doing VTO and translational flight, please let me know. But only when you have a clip of it actually doing it. So far they have not managed it. To get into forward flight out of the hover, means a lot of power from the cold Fan. I dont believe they have enough.

@EnglishTurbines Well i haven't seen a video like that , but i am sure they could i mean if the older and less efficient Harrier could do it I'm sure they;ll figure out on the JSF eventually if they don't already have it , there are quite a few videos of the JSF going from stable flight to hover right on the side of this comment section actually

@slapyousilly3 The Harriers thrust config is very different, it has 4 Nozzles plus lateral nozzles at the tips and a considerably larger diameter Turbofan. This is why its subsonic...The F35 may well get from forward flight back into the Hover. This is easier than going from the Hover into translational flight...When you get a clip...show me by all means, but I wont hold my breath while you do it....:)

@EnglishTurbines Well i will admit i am yet to find a video of the F-35 doing what the harrier can do, the most i found was a 3d rendering but i know that don't count so you might be right about this plane not being very good, personally i like the F-22 better , may be expensive and not hover but you can tell just by looking at its performance how it outdoes the F-35 in almost every way , i think obamas cancelling of the Raptor to make way for the JSF was a mistake

@slapyousilly3 I did not say the F35 was no good, Comparing it to Harrier is insane anyway, Harrier is 40yrs old, and a ground attatck VTO aircraft. F35 is capable of 1200mph, Harrier 650mph, very different...The F35 is multirole, F22 air defence..comparing these aircraft is pointless, each has its own strengths. The F35 is a more atractive package though, due to its Multifunction.

F-35 is good but overrated if you ask me.
It's not as maneuverable and not as fast as the older aircraft. Not as good a thrust ratio.
F-35 does have stealth in its arsenal which the older aircraft did not, but there already exists technology which lights ups stealth aircraft like Christmas lights, and more countries are likely to acquire this technology in the near future.
If nothing else F-35 is a good replacement for the night-hawk and the harrier.

It's not meant to be manoeuverable, that's the job of the F-22. The F-35 is supposed to be cheap and thus numerous, and competent at air-to-air combat against 5th generations and good at attacking ground targets as well, and to use overwhelming numbers to compensate for any shortcomings.

F35 vs the F22. Both are great, but we will hear and see more F35's because the F22 program is capped and "might" be totally scrapped. Why? We don't have the money for expensive projects like this.

Both are great but the F-22 is still far more superior. F-22 is an expensive program And would never be scrapped just put off. Sure we don't have money for expensive projects like this but you sound very ignorant and sound almost as if the US is responsible for everything in the program. It is an international program with 10 another nations taking part in the budget and build. A multirole Jet like this is needed cause it would save Military Jet Budget. It replaces A-10s, F-A18s and F-15s.

Wow no need for profanity. What are you like four? Sure the US is spending the most in the project. But I do not understand how angering allies is involved with your comeback to a topic on budget. F-35 is almost similar to the F-22 but superior so why would we want to share our military technology to the world? Aren't we the U.S.? Our goal is to be one of the top nations. If we give our tech away it could make our ally scientists research on it and consider in making a better F-22.

Second! The project costs a lot of money but it is an international project. And by doing this project we would save a lot of money from buying seperate aircrafts like A-10s, F-18s, and 15s which you couldn't get through your thick skull. And this would help the economy going as we will sell this aircraft to other nations because they are very interested in it.

F-35 is a multirole fighter. Do you have any idea on how much money this will save in the military budget?? No longer will we need a company to waste money and get loans on making a F-15 type 2. Instead we can use a jet aircraft that could be used for every role just adding different attachments and adjustments. Launching from landbase installations, Aircraft carriers, fighter-bomber jet. This project is a whole lot cheaper than the F-16, F-15, A-10, FA-18, F-14 projects all combined. Moron...
