No, they weren't. The girl's mother died and left her in the custody of two men whom the mom had been with in the past, but they didn't know which one was Nicole's father. Since the two men had differing personalities, it provided some kind of balance for the daughter Nicole, so they both raised her as their own. The title of the show (and the way our world is today) make it easy to make certain implications, but that's not the way it was at all.
