  • Is that Johnny Marr on guitar?

  • @senorjiveturkee Yes, it is!

  • @senorjiveturkee Yep! Ain't it great?

  • this is song is powerful. but if you check out the lyrics as a whole you can see that this song is about man and nature and how much humans fucking suck.

  • I love this song, but in my opinion Modest Mouse is an awkward band on stage sometimes. Like a famous writer who just wants to make his works of art in peace and tranquility.

  • Come back Johnny Marr!!

  • Modest Mouse is the wankiest band name i've ever heard.

  • @sparkyinbath sparkyinbath is quite a cool name though. ^o)

  • Fantastic,,, i could on, but i wont...it just is..

  • Took a long while but my favorite album, when I go to music festivals there aren't any acts with greatest hits as good as any MM album

  • awesome sound + awesome lyrics = modest mouse (aka eargasm)

  • This band is so cool,I love their music.

  • not sure if every song has to have an 'alternative meaning'...i just enjoy the great vocals...and those guitars!!!! :)

  • ahh, mm is awesome.

  • wait its issacs...k what is it still

  • guy on the far right. wood grain guitar...what is that guitar

  • @LockeH27 its sickk huh

  • yeah what is it!

  • Isaac Brock's guitar looks ace. Awesome song aswell!

  • who is that doing back up vocals? Shins guy?

  • i believe so

  • this song saved my life

  • @macdaddy1091 how

  • @macdaddy1091 This song is still saving my life

  • ahhhh this song is frickon awesome, a little overplayed but I dont care it still kicks ass

  • A little overplayed? I wish it were overplayed in NZ, modest mouse are an underground band here.

  • yah baby

  • this song has really good lyrics (:

if you really listen to them, anyone can fit this song.

  • hm its nice to hear that ending w/o the jarring drums that open the next song... which is still a good song..

  • exactly what I was thinking!!!

  • i like it!

  • not one of my fav mm but it's pretty good

  • It's a beautiful transition if you ask me, who knows, maybe the next album will be even darker. Actually I found WWD darker than Good News.

  • Man I'm sick of this whole "MM isn't what they use to be" crap. I love MM's older stuff more, but do people not see the beauty of their new album?

Isaac is finally coming to terms in this song that he's spent the majority of his life artistically portraying how pointless life is, and now he's transitioning to realizing he had "missed the boat" and spent time listening to life's "end gong" instead of life's "sweet bells" (enjoying the beauty of the present moment.)

  • i think I love you.

    Thank fuck somebody else understands.

  • @equivocalx

i agree man, i love there new stuff so much

i think this song is my favorite

but fire it up, dashboard, little motel

there all so good, and this guys such

    a good song writer.

  • @equivocalx I wish I could upvote you more.

  • @equivocalx I think the whole band has matured and evolved for the better.

  • @equivocalx people change. MM changed and so did the people who listened thats all there is to it. memorys is what drives people

  • @equivocalx you my friend, are a winner.

  • @equivocalx I don't think they've ever had nihilistic tendencies lyrically

Just think of their two best known songs, Float On and Dashboard

    "We'll all float on okay"

"Well it would've been, could've been worse then you will ever know"

His lyrics often look on the brighter side of life even if they often do have a sombre dark twist to them :)

  • @Renegademaster15

I don't mean to be a dick, but you've obviously never read a lyric from their older albums.

  • @equivocalx To be honest to think that something is obvious by deducing it from a single comment that doesn't give you any insight into your deduction just proves you wrong

And you are wrong, I do have all their albums, and I'm sure I could think of earlier examples of that kind of message, just one of the top of my head is "Gravity Rides Everything"

"It all will fall right into place"

It's a lyrical theme that carries throughout much of their work :)

  • @Renegademaster15

Um, what? LOL. Gravity Rides Everything, Float On, Dashboard are the main three that carry the "accept life in a positive way" message and are beautiful songs in their own right. However, all three are their COMMERCIAL hits that subscribe to that meaning. If you do research, 80% of their work contains negative philosophical lyrics that are beautiful. Modest Mouse questions the meaning of life and the infinite vastness of the universe on that album in nihilistic ways.

  • @Renegademaster15

Point is, for those three that you listed, which are commercial hits subscribing to the mainstream message (still good songs nonetheless,) I could name at least 30 negative/beautiful depressing ones. Their early themes in their earliest albums delt with society and how the shopping mall is taking over, and how society sort of stops giving a shit about you after you're a kid (i.e. Tundra Desert) Then in later albums like M&A they go deeper, saying talk is meaningless (M&A)

  • @Renegademaster15

And question the meaning of our existence, and the nature of belief, all philosophical and nihilistic messages and are pretty damn dark if you actually absorb the songs. Which, is the majority of their work.

And that ends our discussion. Good day.

  • @equivocalx Questioning the meaning of our existence is not a nihilistic quality what so ever, nihilist's deny that life has any conceivable meaning, we are all just applying a subjective value on a Rorschach test

"As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being"

While their songs are highly philosophical I'm afraid you're going to have provide greater evidence to end this discussion :)

  • @Renegademaster15 I have already provided more evidence than you in previous posts, but if you insist: "All this talking all the time and the air fills up, up, up until there's nothing left to breathe"/ "Everyone's afraid of their own life, if you could be anything you want you'd be dissapointed am I right?"/"There's one thing to know about this earth, we're put here to make more dirt and that's ok"/"Everytime you think you're walking you're just moving the ground"/

  • @Renegademaster15 "So you think you figured out everything, then you know that our minds are just made out of strings to be pulled" " "So all of the businessers in their unlimited hell

Where they buy and they sell and they sell all their trash To each other" "All the people you knew were the actors" ""This is the part of me that needs medication. This is the part of me that thinks outer space is all dead." "We're all doctors trading sadness for numbness."/ "Someone smart said nothing at all"

  • @Renegademaster15 I can go all day. "Give me forced health til I wish death on myself" "If you think you know enough to know you know you've had enough, and if you think you don't you probably will" "If God takes life he's an Indian giver" "In this place that I call home, my brain's the cliff and my heart's the bitter buffalo" "Wind up anger with the endless view of the ground's colorful patchwork" "You know that ball has no sides" "I'm not sure who I am but I know who I've been"

  • @Renegademaster15 "Someday you will die and somehow something gonna steal your carbon" "Dehydrate back into minerals. A lifelong walk to the same exact spot" "The parting of the sensory, it's old old news to read" "Was there a need for creation, that was hidden in a math equation and that's this: Where do circles begin?" "Does anybody know a way a body could get away "And the one thing you taught me about human beings was this, they ain't made of nothing but water and shit"

  • @Renegademaster15 The three you listed and good songs in their own right, don't get me wrong and it's good to like them because as I posted before, I like that Modest Mouse changes their theme album from album, they're such an intelligent band. However to state that the majority of their work views life as positive is just wrong and outright ignoring facts, as the three you listed are their commercial hits they have to subscribe to, you know, to sell records for their major label they're on now.

  • @equivocalx

there is no such thing as intelligent band , only creative and artistic''' and then again everyone has different genes and taste

    u dummy

  • @blackoil911

    LOL

Intelligent bands exist. I am not going to bother explaining myself here.

  • @blackoil911

And of course everyone has a different taste, congratulations on pointing out absolutely nothing that is so completely obvious and contributing a void to the discussion.

  • @equivocalx You're obviously not very good at reading my comments. I never said there was anything wrong with liking their poppier stuff. I just stated that most MM fans would agree their older stuff was more perplexing, it is not to knock the new fans at all. Everyone has a different taste, well uh yeah, duh.

  • @equivocalx That would imply it's possible to have an intelligent discussion on YouTube.

  • @equivocalx I agree to an extent, it just feels like they're leaning to the poppier side of things, which early modest mouse is the opposite too.

  • @equivocalx Brother? Too Right!!! This is a great tune. The lyric is where it's at! The music adds to it. Just like it should. This is one of the few songs that will become timeless.

  • this is one of my favorite songs by them, i got all the albums, i love there fricken music, its the best.

  • I love this song. I just got introduced to this band and they are already one of my favorites, i can't get enough of them.

p.s. can we please stop the flame wars?

  • it is true that MM are not all about the good things but if you read between the lines a little but you'll realise their new cd isnt about anthing good either.

  • theres so many videos of this song :p

still a great song tho :D

  • so i hear james mercer singing back up...why is he not featured in the video?

  • Yeah, they're not about the good things, unless all you've heard is their new stuff and don't know anything about them. They're more about how pointless things are and how bad society has become.

  • I agree man. I really wish they would return to their roots. I'm a huge MM fan and I enjoyed the new cd, but it really downgraded the band.

  • Hey if pgarcia thinks one way, then thats how he thinks of a song. No one should critisize just because they see a song a different way then you do. And that's one beauty of music.

  • you know you're doing something right when johnny marr ends up in your band...

  • Eh, when you look at all the modest mouse songs you can see a change occuring. They seem to start out sad and move onto a stage where he just learns to move on.

  • that's why they're so great...it's all about life and how you got to get over the bad stuff and focus on the good stuff...gotta love modest

  • i first fell in love with mm when i saw them preform this song on some late night show...

    i have loved them since!!!

  • i love all of modest mouse. this is my favorite though. rock on!

  • My favorite of this band because I just can't understand the Dash Board and float on.

  • the upright electric bass he's playing looks sooo nice. I want it!;)

  • Other of my fouvorite songs, very nice sound, interesting lirycs, what else can i say they are Modest Mouse....

  • This song makes me think about night drives.

    Spiffy video.

  • missed the boat.

then fell in the cold water and cut my shin on a rock.

    ooo

  • This song is awesome and when i really think about it i laugh histarically.

  • i like to sit back and smoke a jibber when i listen to this song

  • HAHAHA

    nicceee

  • i'll surely second that.. or third it.. or both.. (cough)

  • This is defiantly a 'in the car with your two best friends and just cruisin' summer song.

    =]

    DEFIANTLY top 5.

  • amen to that

  • pretty funky...

  • good work, for an awesome band!!

  • Modest Mouse is so awesome! i love there music. oh if u notice in the one part(1:05-1:06) the drums look like googly eyes which is very neat. there music is just so good, i haven't heard one song of there's i don't like yet, and i have heard alot of them. :)

  • I ran out and bought the CD...this is the only good song!

  • dashboard is a good song from the album

The Ocean breathes salty; different album but still a good song.. as well as Float on

  • ... ur a fuckin meat head

  • One of my favorite albums of all time. The most clever lyrics too.

While we're on the subject, could we change the subject now?

  • great band great song on an amazing album

  • AHH MAZING SONGGGGG

    wow

    wow

    wow

    nothing more i can say

  • Anyone else notice that one bit is from "Dashboard" too? I don't own the CD, and I'm wondering if they made it like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and they have a repeating part through all the songs.

  • AMAZING song..

    my favorite band by far

  • anybody else finding his lisp amusing?

  • Great attempt...love the such and such and such and go god damn...you nailed it.

love the black and white. Alot of folks stayed away from that and it works for you really well!

  • ok, i saw them live at virgin fest a week ago. it was AMAZING!!! i loved it so much. this song was the opener. it was great though. probably the best show of the day.

  • I just love that this band only changes when they feel like it or have a new idea. They don't progress to get more fans, because that won't be their true music

  • "We were certainly uncertain

At least I'm pretty sure I am"

Simple clever lyrics like that jus Modest Mouse who they are, and they have billions of little sayings through out all of there songs from the first album to the most recent.

  • Great song.

  • not really, but I do enjoy the lyrics of Modest Mouse, "While we're on the subject, can we change the subject now."
