Well innovative, great that the Mercury Music Prize recognises new sounds such as this - after all its only 16 years since Digable Planets burst on the scene.
No her album is NOT the album of the year... it's not hugely important but yes she is quite talented.
I am a fan of her music, but she should NOT have won the Mercury Prize.. the album is not groundbreaking or hugely innovative.
And she has shown a degree of unjustified arrogance which is not flattering...
Anyway, I do actually wish her luck, and hope the Mercury will change there judging panel as the once prestigious prize is now in danger of loosing credibility.
whether she won the mercury or not, i don't understand how you can say her album isn't groundbreaking. her style of hip pop is something completely new to come out of the uk. its the first time i've ever listened to a british hip pop or grime artist and been reminded of the peotry and style of groups like a tribe called quest. most mcs feel they have to be aggressive in their style to be credible.
debelle's lyrics are eloquent, poetic and smart without resorting to swearing and being aggressive to make her point and tell her story. not that i'm not a fan of the artists who do, i just think it's refreshing to have someone go against the norm. so i'd have to disagree and say that i do think her album is groundbreaking, maybe not a massive industry changing way, but i think she is definitely a new kind of role model in uk hip pop for future young artists to look up to.
She made a fan out of me! ;)
