@4piglite : mmmm?! what did Bruckner mean when he penned "nicht schnell" as the tempo indication? -- of apiece written alla brev? ("not slow" and in cut time?)
amazing piece sang realy well i sang in cologne cathedral at the start of the summer for the lunchtime prayer session and we sang this as its german soundedawsome
The straight voices of boy sopranos fit this song well. But they may usually be too immature, both emotionally and technically, to sing this perfectly. I hope my chamber choir will record a video of a close to perfect version one day. Hehe. :-)
One detail: I believe that the highest note of the sopranos should be intonated a little higher in order to achieve the orgasm effect of that part. Also, the balance should be improved so we hear everything that happens in that part. :-)
you were obviously never a boy treble in a cathedral... on just about any a cappella motet boys will sound better than womenn imho. It's the purity of the sound that is brought out and that should elicit the emotional response (along with a good men's choir). Post a link though when you record your choir, love to hear it!
I'm little bit surprised by your lack of knowledge about boy voice. I could "easily" hit F4 note by singing when I was 12. It only demands right kind of voice training :)
Tempo is a little wacky, it doesn't ever feel like it settles into something reasonable. The fugal section in the middle sounds very rushed. The boys on the alto and soprano parts sound nice though.
usually when a piece is performed with boys as altos and sopranos, the tenors and basses would be sung by older, mature voices, such as it is shown here by the guys in the back with beards.
the Cologne Cathedral Choir consists of both, young boys as altos & sopranos and adult male singers for tenor & bass. Its the official church choir of the Cathedral for all christian liturgias.
Years ago, I just happened on the all-state in Norman while visiting OK City. I was struck by the quality. They were doing Orff's Catulli Carmina, not exactly an easy peace. It was remarkable. They must have a good statewide program in Oklahoma.
But back on point, this is a wonderful performance. I have it on a couple of CDs, and for a boys choir, it is most impressive.
One of my all-time favourite choral works. Very good performance but I agree with the others: it's too fast!!

Fantastic. Makes me want to go back, but I'll be back for good within a year to get my fill of the magnificent Koelner Dom. :)

Too fast!!!! Slow it down, Maestro...sheesh! Did someone need to go to the bathroom?? I didn't realize Lydian mode was supposed to be so peppy!

@smoothshaver82 "Nicht schnell" means not fast. Langsam is slow in German, Schnell is fast.

I sang this about two days ago in my choir. I love it!
This performance has s a little screaming on the high A when they say Meditabur, but they're young. Totally forgivable, especialy for young boys.

Die Jungs singen sehr gut, aber Anton Bruckner kann mir it seinen Sakralwerken gestohlen bleiben.
The boys are making a very good performance but Bruckner should let me in peace with his crap sacral works

I think it would have sounded less crazy if they had been in a "dead" room. Anytime you have that much reverb, i agree you have to slow it down

there's no way that those kids are 15 years old
that low f at the end is impossible for a 15 year old, plus the one guy has a beard

Bruckner not only a genious symphonist, but a talanted scared music composer.
It is because of his imperturbable faith.
His sincerity makes his music lovely for many people, also for me!
