@JerkDouglas Haha I hope that didn't make me seem like a snob, stating that Fripp > Kanye (true, but irrelevant lol), I absolutely love the music of both
@elSargent93 Yes, I have. Before you were born, I was playing Crimson in my band. I played guitar in a prog rock band. I have seen Fripp twice. Maybe you've never had a chance to hear their finest work, in my opinion even better than Red, Discipline. So when I say that Belew is the best part of the band, I don't do so in haste. Like I said, 'Fripp is good in the background, but clearly Crimson's best work was with Adrian up front and center.' So don't talk down to me son.
@legunncat Fripp is probably playing everything you hear on the tape. He's playing all the parts, not just playing along with someone else. Most likely using some of the earliest guitar synthesizer equipment available. This man is a major innovator of electronic music for guitar.
@TFMTraining I never mentioned he didn't do and was any of the things you said. If you'd read what I typed you would see that I mentioned him being a better background player for someone like Belew and that King Crimson's best work was with that lineup.
@paterkyrios Yah, seriously! If you listen to Oldfield's guitar solo on the track Magic Touch (you can download the vid off YouTube), it sounds just like Fripp when he's getting going here. Just thought I'd add, Fripp's got a real cutie for a wife - Toyah Wilcox.
@251dog That he was. Can't argue with the truth. I wouldn't count myself as a King Crimson fan, though. I really like the material he did afterwards. The album he did with David Sylvian back in '94 is a particular favourite...the name of which escapes meright now. Grr. It's the one with Jean the Birdman.
@hamjamnspamalot2 Thanks for that. I was too lazy to get off my butt and walk 5 steps to my CD's! Sylvian and Fripp was a great combo. Seeing them in concert would be phenomenal.
I saw him give a solo concert about 5 years back. He had racks of electronics and multiple banks of foot switches, and sat on a stool, and sounded like a choir of angels.
Probably the best electric guitarist there ever was.
I recall seeing this on television. I think it was Don Kirchner's rock concert or something like that. Pretty bold move on their part considering the musical landscape at the time. As I watched him perform this, I realized that the tone of his guitar reminded me of a recorder.
I recall seeing this on television. I think it was Don Kirchner's rock concert or something like that. Pretty bold move on considering the musical landscape at the time. As I watched him perform this, I realized that the tone of his guitar reminded me of a recorder.
I remember Saturday Night Live playing a short clip of Fripp doing his thing, but think maybe it was a different performance than this. So very many years ago, the memory is fogged...
That sounds like it's from "No Pussyfooting" he did with Eno. I saw him in 1980 with King Krimson and he was off to the side of the stage with no lights on him, on a stool and he was kickin his feet in the air all out wailin in the darkness. Was soo bitchin.
J'ai longtemps pensé que Fripp à cette époque jouait la plus belle musique du monde. Je le pense toujours, avec Eno comme complice invisible. Magnifique.
Has anyone else heard Fipp's collaborations with Andy Summers from the early 80's? They did two wonderful albums "I Advance Masked" and "Bewitched'. I have both plus a cool interview promo. disc! Fripp should have a signature Axe.
not saying this because I love fripp or crimson but I just don't understand how someone could "dislike" this video. no matter your interests I can't understand how someone could find this video unlikeable
@cheaptrades - because it's boringly simple, and pretentious that he makes it out to be something amazing or special when it's just simple noodling over a basic loop.
@progjazzfusion yeah but did it sound good? unless you couldn't hear over the noodling, yes. also, this is '79, the very beginning of electronic music, so yeah, it was pretty interesting at the time.
@cheaptrades - are you 12? please do your research, first of all this is not electronic music, and far from the beginning of it anyways. The backing is all guitar layers. Also electronic music came out decades before this, research it. As for playing over tape loops, terry riley as well as the soft machine did this stuff in the 60s way better and more interesting. electronec music goes back to at least the 1920s. and i know there were sequencers playing tube osc synths in the 50s if not sooner.
@progjazzfusion Firstly, If I am indeed 12 then your rant is just as pathetic as your reasonings behind it. secondly, what do any of them have to do with whether or not is sounds good? Your argument states the following: The music is dissatisfying because the artist "noodles" over loops of sound which could have been created decades earlier.
@progjazzfusion agreed, 'good' is purely subjective however, your original argument states your distaste for it as "boringly simple" and "pretentious," phrases which lay no claim to sound. Yanno what, Fur Elise SUCKS because its "boringly simple" and as for that Mozart character, what a "pretentious" little bugger history documents him as. Indeed your knowledge of electronic music is greater than mine yet your attitude portrays a boring personality, void of talent or original thought.
@progjazzfusion Sorry to break up this argument, but i'd just like to point out Mozart was in no way Romantic, he was defonatly classical. And romantic (and classical for tha matter) period music represented an incredible move away from the standards laid out by Baroque era music towards the freedom of expression, for it's time the actual musical ideas were revolutionary. Just wondering, who are you in too then, progjazzfusion?
@willisenglish - i am no classical expert by any means and dont know the exact period definitions, being way more into jazz, but i just meant that the classical composers the other guy mentioned are more traditionally accessable and straightforwards to me, compared to the darker what i guess is called "modern" period classical (1900s to ???) which includes some atonal, 12 tone, schoenberg type stuff, which sounds almost jazz in certain ways to me which i can relate to more (not all of it though)
@progjazzfusion Well being a jazz fan i can see how this bores you, to be honest this is a very bad representation of what made this guy famous, tbh i think even I could have at least chucked in a lydian scale there. He's capable of better.. And modern jazz and modern "20th century" classical music have got the same sorta music, just different drives (jazz does stuff for the sake of it, i think, classical usualy has some sort of reasoning or philosiphical stuff). Whatever you say, it's all good
Great tone is that a big muff or some other tone generator? By the way, this stands on it's own as great art without comparing it to other music. Also check out Fripp's collaboration's with Andy Summers from the 80's for some great but often overlooked recordings.
@spider62able What I've read is that Robert used a Foxey Lady Fuzzbox. There's more info here one youtube. Mike Matthews built this pedal in 1968 for the Guild company, and also made the exact same pedal under the name "Axis". Later models have a tone control added to them. Later on, Mike Matthews started the production of pedals under the name Electro Harmonix.
I like how his style both embraces and at the same time, defies the convential style of playing. How could anyone compare themselves to the genius of Fripp?
To me this is just a lot of noodling. No real melodies. No real "ideas". I think his pulloffs are bland and he hits the root waaaaayyy to much, especially towards the end
There need be no comparison between shredding vs. this. I agree shredders can get dull unless they are well rounded.. Melody ..Melody = cool. As far as shredding goes, watch some of the videos of this man soloing and learn.. he can shred with THE very best, if he so chooses.
@MikeLamb24 i have no words to describe how sick i am of people like you. Look at the pentatonic licks at 2:20 on. Look at how warm it is. Ugh, i can't stand you.
who says roberts not fast hes faster than any shredder alive hes been quoted as saying if he were a bit younger hed don some spandex pants an play speed metal or shred as you call it!
@davidhaleydanceking If a guitarist should be judged by his techincal ability, Robert Fripp is one of the greatest guitarist of the world. And he's moving through an environment wich meaning is the music itself and pushing the limits of experimentation.
I think he's totally connected with his music, you should watch the documentary "Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft - Careful with that axe" (wich is in youtube). The guitar craft is about the connection with music
the world of music has a massive debt to genius innovators of recording and playing music like fripp, eno, zappa - to name a few.... they are not genius for how technically well they play. they are genius for how they think and connect with your heart through the language of music! so timeless.
MikeLamb24 is the perfect example of how not to have the slightest idea of what art is about. You should not even take him into consideration. Just let him drown in his own ignorance and keep enjoying the best contemporary composer (together with Frank Zappa).
Below, see a stunning example of why both trolling and arguing with said troll on youtube are complete wastes of time and effort.
I rather like the irony of this following Rick James, and actually it is quite a lovely improv (over a pre recorded loop). Would really have liked to have caught Fripp live back then, to see the birth of soundscaping up close.
Sorry but i don´t like his melodys,is bouring and sounds like a beginner and his vibrato is for an acoustic nylon string guitar, really this vibrato in an electric guitar not have any efect , is my opinion .Well is 1979 but in the 90`s he plays very much beter
It's funny that there are these groups of people that are more interested in watching rather than listening musicians. Robert Fripp writes and plays music for the ears his presentation and performance certainly reflects this. Most of the time I listen to him and think "wow how did he do that?" at which point its nice to watch and maybe figure it out what he did or something.
Hard to believe I'm reading comments like "So and So is great, he played really fast." There's a great line by I think one of the German electronic/"Krautrock" musicians of the 70s: "They played so many notes becuase they couldn't find the right ones."
I suppose if you've lost access to your soul and real art, then someone playing really fast is the kind of thing you need to see to convince yself that this is great stuff.
@MikeLamb24...Your a twit....these "Guitar Gods" that you worship..have participated in the destruction of modern music. It is crap...if you are still juvenile enough to think that speed has anything to do with the creative process or some how adds to the transcendent quality of music, then you will always be blind to the true (almost spiritual) potential of music.....do you listen to anything other than Rock & Roll?...Jazz? Classical? Delta Blues? Broaden your horizons or shut the fuck up.
Fripp is not about speed, though he can play it quite well, with numerous techniques and skill. Fripp is about creating and listening, which is evident in how he plays. His lack of interest in being the center of attention is very much and indication on his interest in the music and not how many leads he can throw in a given piece at what speed.
Speed is meaningless if the music is hollow, and Fripp's music has tremendous depth which Li and Kroeger sorely lack.
You understand shit about music do you? Comparing this to Nickleback or even Herman Li is outragous. When listening good to the improvisation and technique ( for example the phrasing ) you get a good idea where Steve Vai got his chops from mate!
Brian Eno and Robert Fripp's collaborative albums feature some of the most beautiful music EVER: a major part of that being Frippertronics. If Evensong off the Evening Star album doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.
This is not impressive at all. He is playing way to slow for this to be any good. This poser is super overrated, just listen to "Starless", he literally strums one note the whole song and everyone says it "genius".
@MikeLamb24 As a painter can't be judged by how much green instead of blue he used in one of his paintings, so a guitarist can't be judged by how fast he play his instrument. An artist can be judged by the harmony and expressiveness that he is able to convey with his work. "Playing fast" or "using green" it's nothing of special in itself.
Unlike modern "guitar star", Fripp has actually revolutionized the world of music, with his research, his experiments and his talent as composer.
tone, quality, composition, and dynamics Fripp is a master of all of these things and he has always pushed the envelope. I love his work on I advanced masked and everything else he's done.
@MikeLamb24 So you say that the main man behind King Crimson, one of the best Progressive Rock bands out there, isn't a genius? You need to grow some taste good sir.
@WyattTheGuitarist Chad Kroeger is the front man of the biggest rock band in the world. Nickelback is like this generation's Beatles. Herman Li is arguably the best guitarist alive. He plays fast as shit and can make some really cool sounds with his guitar. Herman could play circles around Fripp
@MikeLamb24 ...no. King Crimsons material is so beyond herman li's level that its not even funny. I would love to see dragonforce pull off "Fracture" live. you are ignorant.
@MikeLamb24 Hahahah can't believe you're complaining about this proto-drone music because it is slow, it is like saying "I speed metal would be much better if only it was slower"
@MikeLamb24 Haha, if you think fast equals good, I dont you think you know what makes music special. And by the why man.... Starless is a slow song. If you want fast Fripp listen to Requiem or Frame by Frame...
@MikeLamb24 Actually, I've only seen ONE person who said "it genius". This was from 79. People who know Vai's stuff well can hear the Fripp influence in his playing. Search for the song 'I Know You're Here' by Vai. Always remember, music is ever-evolving, and constantly being shaped by influence. While one guy might not be "good" at playing super-fast legato stuff like a "guitar god" doesn't mean he doesn't influence people who become "guitar gods"....
Wylde Stallions stole this from Fripp.

the world of music has a massive debt to genius innovators of recording and playing music like fripp, eno, zappa - to name a few.... they are not genius for how technically well they play. they are genius for how they think and connect with your heart through the language of music! so timeless.

Would really have liked to have caught Fripp live back then, to see the birth of soundscaping up close.

robert fripp is just fucking awesomeeee, thank you for those inspirational riffs!!!!

Broaden your horizons or shut the fuck up.
shugalluful 9 months ago

Beatifull by the way!

Brian Eno and Robert Fripp's collaborative albums feature some of the most beautiful music EVER: a major part of that being Frippertronics. If Evensong off the Evening Star album doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.

not just a les paul signature
a true gibson fripp.

This is not impressive at all. He is playing way to slow for this to be any good. This poser is super overrated, just listen to "Starless", he literally strums one note the whole song and everyone says it "genius".
MikeLamb24 10 months ago
@MikeLamb24 As a painter can't be judged by how much green instead of blue he used in one of his paintings, so a guitarist can't be judged by how fast he play his instrument. An artist can be judged by the harmony and expressiveness that he is able to convey with his work. "Playing fast" or "using green" it's nothing of special in itself.
Unlike modern "guitar star", Fripp has actually revolutionized the world of music, with his research, his experiments and his talent as composer.

@Corilo91
tone, quality, composition, and dynamics Fripp is a master of all of these things and he has always pushed the envelope. I love his work on I advanced masked and everything else he's done.

How fast is Robert Fripp? Fast enough. In any case he paints beautiful pictures.......with sound
1138thz 6 months ago
@MikeLamb24 If you listen to enough rock and metal, shredders will start to bore you, no matter how fast they are
However people who can really bring out the harmonies and melodies in a song are timeless and will always impress you :)

@MikeLamb24 thats a lot of shit for someone with "chad kroeger guitar solo" and "Herman Li shred session" favorited on their channel to talk.
WyattTheGuitarist 9 months ago
@WyattTheGuitarist Chad Kroeger is the front man of the biggest rock band in the world. Nickelback is like this generation's Beatles. Herman Li is arguably the best guitarist alive. He plays fast as shit and can make some really cool sounds with his guitar. Herman could play circles around Fripp

@MikeLamb24 ...no. King Crimsons material is so beyond herman li's level that its not even funny. I would love to see dragonforce pull off "Fracture" live. you are ignorant.

mindfreak990 9 months ago
@MikeLamb24 Haha, if you think fast equals good, I dont you think you know what makes music special. And by the why man.... Starless is a slow song. If you want fast Fripp listen to Requiem or Frame by Frame...
darkalleyheroes 9 months ago
@MikeLamb24 Actually, I've only seen ONE person who said "it genius". This was from 79. People who know Vai's stuff well can hear the Fripp influence in his playing. Search for the song 'I Know You're Here' by Vai. Always remember, music is ever-evolving, and constantly being shaped by influence. While one guy might not be "good" at playing super-fast legato stuff like a "guitar god" doesn't mean he doesn't influence people who become "guitar gods"....
