  • we only have what we remember<3

  • this has got to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life.

  • I heard a facebook chat noise at 1:49

  • This made me hurt listening to it. I teared up. These lyrics have so much meaning.

  • i like the background music. but i liked the song until the sweaty man started sweating and spitting and yelling with his raspy voice. i see his taleent, i just think the music behind him has more potential than to be paired with drooling raspy yelling. he and the music dont coenside together. but separate theyd be awesome.

  • POOP

  • Just beautiful.... The lyrical content is incredible. I hope some day I am blessed with the ability to write like this. Keep it up man!!

  • Goosebumps and tears, everywhere.

  • Bruno Mars comes with piano, Dan Smith comes with TV.

  • He is fucking brilliant all the time, looking forward to they're next Colo run

  • The man is brilliant, and so friendly in person.

  • I swear I can hear his mustache.

  • Paul Rudd, such a versatile actor.

  • This band saved my life and launched my music career.

    Listener is beautiful.

  • I'm in Asia. And I'm just listening to this beautiful thing and the only way I can express myself is that thing black women do in church agreeing with full faith the words of the pastor. Dan must be god because man, you read my heart out so well. I'm sure you read and reach the hearts of many.

  • How could Stupid Hoe - Nicki Minaj have millions of views, and this not even have a million?

  • Drank a beer with this man at Orange Peel last year. Dan, is a very interesting person, all around great guy.

  • Bananapielord Sent Me :)

  • It's all about the lyrics and to be honest It's what music should be all about, Pop "artist" doesn't care about lyrics as long everything sounds catchy, and listener is the opposite of that. Heart is what makes listener a good band, emotional coneccion towards the lyrics.

  • @richidt17 ummm no music shouldnt be all about lyrics cause then there wouldn't be any music, your looking for poetry my good friend and even that has a beat to it. people forget that the voice is an instrument too and that we use it melodically even when were just talking. poetry can be music but music can be much much more then poetry ever could some of the best tracks iv heard where instrumental only and i got so much out of it. of course subjectivity plays a big part in this hahahaha

  • he doesnt sing... he doesnt rap... he just talks, and with a purpose

  • This was actually pretty good.

  • You've found your words, as I hope to find mine some day

  • True "feel good" music haha

  • Probably the most poetic type of music ive ever heard

  • For once, I can say I'm proud to be from Arkansas, just like Dan The Man.

  • I love lamp!

  • No TV's were hurt during the making of this video.

  • Perfect is an understatement

  • Love it, amazing song

  • so much lense flare.

  • Brings me to tears every time.

  • I think listener is pretty good but I dislike the way Dan talks about it ("I've started a genre called Talk Music", he sounds pretty cocky to me)

  • haters gonna hate, listerners gonna listen.

  • Stfu calling this hipster its just a different genre? fucking ignorance

  • People obviously don't know what hipster is, calling this Hipster.

Hipster is something that people find creative that people have done over and over in the past, trying to fit in with the latest trend.

This is definitely unique in its own, and if you're calling this hipster, you need to get your head checked.

  • 0:01 = hole in shoe. THIS MAN IS AMAZING!

  • The first time I heard this song was when I put my Ipod on shuffle after a friend uploaded a ton of music to it. My first reaction was, "Wow this is horrible, skip" but one night while my Ipod was on shuffle , this song came on again, and I was too lazy to reach for my Ipod, and I listened to the full song, and loved it, I saw the beauty that was actually there.

  • This is what iv felt in my heart for so long...

  • Perfect. Lyrics and all.

  • this is so beautiful, no words.

  • This gave me chills and made me cry.

  • These guys came to my middle school, I enjoyed them very much. :) Nobody else liked them though.... shame.

  • @YoungBotchHeads shame indeed. these guys make beautiful music. this is pure heart right here. it's just too bad so many kids are so obsessed with image and what "sounds cool" that they can't appreciate soul like this.

  • Iam not sure if i like it or hate it

  • It's so weird hearing this. I keep listening to a cover of it one of my friends made of it. I love this song though:)

  • I'm proud to see something like this come from Arkansas. <3

  • These words are perfect. just wish the rest of the album was this.

  • How you can even make fun of Listener? This is beautiful. So beautiful. Music is so magical and his voice - amazing.

  • Also, I think he's better without the music, kind of feels tacked on to appeal to people who can't tolerate spoken word poetry.

  • I feel like he was cloned from the DNA of the lead singers of mewithoutYou, EP-era Against Me, and Gogol Bordello. Either way, he knows his way around blank piece of paper.

  • these guys really should be more popular

  • we only have what we remember

  • This is music i would actually buy... where can i spend my money, dammit?

  • @MegaKtizzle you can go to listener.bandcamp.com He sells his music there. Digital copies and CDs to mail to you, I think.

  • @Narwhals88 Thanks! I wouldve just done an itunes thing but i want the actual cd's.

  • @MegaKtizzle No problem!

  • I don't mean to sound like everyone else but thumbs up if The Chariot brought you here

  • Every time something strays from the mainstream, people have to hate and call it "hipster". All it is is people being themselves; being creative and new. They are expressing themselves. They are being a leader, rather than a follower. That's why when you guys call something "hipster", I think it's the greatest compliment you can give because all it means is that it's more daring, brave, and courageous than anything you'll ever come up with musically.

  • I'm so glad Dan is finally getting the views he deserves. Keep on, dude!

  • reminds me of the redneck guy from anchorman. Cant take him seriously anymore D:

  • good.god.this.song.

  • @Emiester21 considering he did an extremely commendable job at combining a sense of 19th century Victorian Florid prose, but still allowing the sentences to be concise and compelling he succeeded in the art of spoken word in a capacity that far exceeds any poet I've heard of recent with maybe the exception of Hughes.

  • You need to listen to it more than once to truly appreciate it. I've been listening to this for a while, I'm surprised there isn't a "replay limit" or else I would've gotten it a few times. Really, though, great song.

  • Sucks balls still.

  • John Acuff recommended this on his blog so I gave it a listen and I haven't stopped reading the lyrics for about two days.

This is honest and real. Sometimes honest and real doesn't sit well with us the first time around. Sometimes it's weird.

"I am the barely living son of a man and woman who barely made it

but we're making it taped together on borrowed

    crutches and new starts"

  • Everyone that makes fun of listener, honestly doesn't see Dan smiths talent.

Why does everything have to be labeled something? Just listen to the damn music.

  • @caitlinxcatastrophex it's not damn, it's blessed!

  • @caitlinxcatastrophex what people don't realize is that Spoken Word is a genre of music... -.-

  • @caitlinxcatastrophex I tend to agree. Rather than bashing him, maybe they could take into consideration the sincerity, and vulnerability in these songs, and that they aren't really meant for us or him, but to bring glory to God.

  • @TheTortillaChip Those are both the least hipster bands, When my 50 year old mom is talking to me about mumford and sons and how it's played in her spinning class.... I don't think it's hipster.

  • Hipster is shit like Mumford and Sons and Rattata. Thats what hipsters think is "creative" when it's really just re-done bullshit to feed the hipster generation.

  • @TheTortillaChip Couldn't disagree with you more really, Mumford and sons are a wonderful band =)

  • @TheTortillaChip Also what do you define as "creative"?

  • @TheTortillaChip Yeahhh, those definitely aren't hipster groups, man.

  • This isn't hipster because It's good.

  • @JawaPenguin16 Death definitely WOULD be better than listening to this.

  • hypnotizing...

  • yesterday my best friend died of a drug overdose, this song is helping me through it. I love you will, rest in peace.

  • Powerful video.

  • @SurrealSuireel Yeah, you do need half a brain to listen to this shit. Good thing I have a full brain.

  • @emiester21 you sat through the video so why bother talking shit? if you don't like it don't listen, don't hate on something others think is beautiful just because you have nothing better to do.

  • He's not "hipster." He's brilliant.

  • @emiester21 what inda music do you listen to?

  • @emiester21 Or you like poetic genius, empathize with the human condition, appreciate spoken words and have half a brain...

  • @emiester21 die

  • @emiester21 sorry this is too brilliantly good for your ears

  • Dan Smith reminds me of a chipmunk in slow motion.

  • what the fuck is a hipster?

  • This is great stuff, found out about this guy through a chariot video. deep stuff

  • I wanna stache like that

  • he doesn't believe in anchors he can use his mustache to park his ship.

  • there is nothing pretentious or hipster about this. Ive seen this guy play with nothing but metal and hardcore bands, not fleet foxes or the shins. Its just poetry, nothing more.

  • @ChiefCrunkahoe Agreed 150%

  • hipsters suck, get out

  • @TheRedSkiesSheffield 1. If I can make a pronounceable youtube username (unlike you, dueche), then I'm obviously not retarded. 2. I'm assuming YOU'RE the one that likes listening to a "song" called Wooden Heart, so again, I'm the retarded one?

  • i keep waiting for him to say "I'VE ABANDONED MY CHILD!, I'VE ABANDONED MY BOY!"

  • Why have I only just discovered this amazing talent!. Shame on me.

  • real talk, can't tell ya how many times I've taken my home appliances into a field and destroyed them.

  • @headabovewaternow society considers you to be insane

  • @headabovewaternow thats sort of what the message is. Don't confide in materialistic items, but in people you care about and that care about you, or don't take them for granted. "we only have what we remember", meaning thats all we can really take with us in the end is just our memories.

  • @headabovewaternow

haha? next time try locking yourself in an oven and turning it on.

  • i cried.

  • I'm going to write talk music now.<3

  • The main reason I love Listener is because each of his thumbnails describes who Dan Smith is. Forever listening.

  • @emiester21 You sir are retarded

  • @TheRedSkiesSheffield you both are retarded

  • @emiester21

The purpose of art is self-expression. Nobody gives a rats ass about your opinon.

  • @AMJBooth I feel like there is something very contradictory in that statement lol

  • "We only have what we remember..."

Gives me goosebumps every single time.

  • Your hand in mine, my fingers in your veins connected

    our bones grown together inside

our hands entwined, your fingers in my veins braided

our spines grown stronger in time

because are church is made out of shipwrecks.

    this song is so touching.

  • Amazing..just utterly amazing........thats......thats..all i can say..

  • Omg omg i cant tell you how much this song reminds me of how i sound when taking a shit

  • This song sends chills down my back.

so, this is what music is suppose to be like..

  • Like this song better without the video. Still an incredibly unique emotional song.

  • I..............I.........

  • It's a damned shame that anytime someone does something different and happens to be fucking brilliant at it, we have to be labelled hipsters.

  • @Vargles We?

  • @Vargles somone sounds like an angry hipster

  • @Vargles its a damned shame that Listener has been around longer than people used the term hipster, yet its considered hipster by those who have just learned about the word "hipster" the last year or so and have just learned about Listener within the last few days. i agree with you man, people are dumb. Labeling something hipster that has been around longer than the term being used to label it. lol

  • @Mikeael7 The term Hipster has been around since the 60's.

  • @btlynch85 yes, but it hasnt been as widely used since maybe the last 2 years. Most people didnt use that word for quite awhile since the 40's and now whenever something is different or creative they label it hipster and it originally dealt with jazz culture not being fashionable or inventive.

  • @Mikeael7 What they are calling a hipster now is definitely not a true hipster...no where near it...these young kids using the term really have no clue...

  • @Vargles This song is great... your still hipsters though

  • Walking campus at 6 am during winter break and playing this is great.

  • So many "this is hipster music" comments.... Well you know what? Maybe I don't like this song because I'm a hipster. Maybe I like this song because it's a beautiful work of art.

  • I have fallen in love with Music all over again.

  • I use the same Logic intro on one of my tracks!

  • First song I've listened to this year. Beautiful.

  • you are all jewish hipster fags

  • @TimeSmall well at least we are happy jack apple

  • @TimeSmall

:3 It's ignorant people like you who justify the smart and the strong. Keep at it, you're making us look good lol.

  • @TimeSmall I see you on a lot of different videos. Fucking look at your profile and get alife. you obviously dont have one when you spend your freetime commenting on youtube

  • freaking awesome!!

  • Dang, that's beautiful. Lyrics, visuals, and you as an artist. You just hit the spot. :)

  • These lyrics make me cry like a baby every single time I listen to them.

  • this is breath taking like a fucking galaxy collaspsing haha

  • I love this.

  • Goosebumps. Mmm.

  • great!

  • So much soul put into every word, beautiful.

  • I cried.

  • CORNERSTONE!!!

  • this is incredible <3 :)

  • "omg he such a hipster wut a dumb" Shut the fuck up. Obviously he's an intelligent individual. Let's see something you've written? Oh wait, you don't have anything? Exactly.

  • I think I'm obsessed with this. So powerful.

If you can't understand what he is saying, there is another version on YouTube of just him performing it without music and he give some background info. Even better!! (it's the black and white one) check it

    Out!

  • everytime i hear this i cry.

  • What a guy.

  • I feel as though he had some sort of bad experience in the hardcore scene.

  • @JamieCarterFilms i feel as though you're a dumbass

  • @PaulJ2344 Why

  • Its hard to hear his message through all the hipster. That and the vocals are mixed pretty low.

  • @RhinoCadaver just listen. be a "listener." his dad died. he has struggled to find hope. but he searches and searches, finding the most depth of feeling in human connection. we are all lost and sad, but we find each other along the way and that's worth treading water for, even if we all end up drowning eventually.

"everything falls apart, but at the same time comes together perfectly for the next step."

  • oh my god

    im crying
