I think you can tell that this was nearing the end of ABBA... For a LIVE concert, they don't seem overly happy to be there- you can tell they'd lost something... This being 1981, would be the year just after the couples split up.
They sound totally original ,like no one else.I can't begin to figure out how they put their songs together when they write them. What comes 1st,,the vocals or the chords?Who writes their songs?
@royko22 ~You do realize they have over 400 million album/CD sales, of that 300 million in 10 years? Vocalists recognize their kind of vocal arrangement is much harder to sing well than it sounds...they ARE that good that they make it seem easy...they earned the Hall of Fame...
@royko22 Who the hell do you think wrote almost all of the music and lyrics, PeeWee Herman. And with more records of all times sold than any other act in history, and outselling the Beatles even now, well, that is why they were elected to the RnR Hall of Fame. Way more popular than the Beatles around the world. Abba Has music man, no the drivelling, soppy ballads of a bunch of illiterate guys.
And the funny thing is, only Agnetha could read and write music.
As duas cantoras do grupo eram excelentes. A loira cantava muito, mas a morena também era talentosa! Que é isso?
Although some of the songs from Dick Cavett are very sad to watch (especially Slipping Through My Finger and Knowing me Knowing You), I really think that it was possibly the best performance they ever did, especially vocally - the girls are simply amazing
Agnetha often said how she hated to be away from her children for any length of time. It would be very hard traveling for weeks on end, but that's how they also became so successful and famous
I disagree with the criticism by some here, this was a great live performance! They didn't have smiles plastered on their faces like they did in the earlier days, but the strain of endless touring, promotion and marriage problems must have been tough, that's what this song is about! Also, this is in front of a small TV studio audience, not a dedicated ABBA concert, it's a totally different atmosphere.
it is sad cause by this point there personal problems really hit them. It got to the point where they was getting tired and fed up with each other sadley u can see it in this video that they didnt look happy.
i agree with the below comments. I absolutely love Abba and this song but it really is a very average and tired rendition by their standards. Cheers for the upload but i'm going back to the studio version-pure gold
A taster of how good their studio live performances could have been if they hadn't (like everyone else) lip-synched through the 1970's.
Pity that by the time these live shows came around, their off-stage problems had sucked the life-blood from their on-stage chemistry, play-acting and mild flirting.
The girls harmonies are excellent.
Everything else looks like it wants to be elsewhere.
I agree. They look tired and jaded. That the managed to keep going for another year was testament to their professionalism. And probably their pain threshold.
I agree, but still, they sound sooo amazing live! Agnetha once said she thinks ABBA was great to listen to, but not great to watch. She was so humble.
I watched some of their earlier performances on Youtube and watching their (Live Last Concert '81) you can tell that the spark was gone. Each song they sing has such a feeling of lasting emptiness. They show must go on was obviously not on their minds during the performances. So tragic, so sad. However thier music lives on. Just think of the joy they brought into so many lives. Agneth, I love you!
This is not the ABBA of old. They seem bored and tired. If I were at this concert, I would have been very disappointed. It's obvious that he end is near for ABBA.
This is one of the saddest videos I have ever watched.
idk what my fav Abba song is, i have a new fav one week to the next. i'll return the question, who's the greatest band then? (don't be obvious and say the Beatles!)
is maith liom! go raibh maith agat,,,whats great about ABBA, you can have a different favorite song every day if you like,,,I agree this is my favorite version also
Whenever you feel down, just listen to an Abba song and you'll realise life is not that bad. The songs are just so pretty and make you feel good about life.
I love Meryl Streep and she does a fine job in Mamma Mia but she can not possible give a performance like this.. Frida is really rare in this concert, her marriage is in pieces and it gives the song so much emotional depth. Meryl never tried to emulate Anna or Frida, she understood maybe because many of these songs a deeply personal.
not me....i'm 45 and abba was and will always be the shit.....great songs with the best vocals ever by a duet (agnetha and frida) in a league of their own...too bad we couldn't jump back to 1977 for a while!!!
A super "Super Trouper",Shay!!! I had never seen this clip before! Very good this live presentation! Really, it is necessary to give the proper value to the group of musicians who accompany them. They are excellent! And Frida´s vocals is marvelous here! Thanks for the lyrics and the post!
Thanks, Shay -- wonderful. I've noticed, when they appeared live with this particular group of musicians/singers, they seemed to elevate their own performances, regardless of whatever personal issues were occurring. As fans, we may sometimes overlook the importance of those folks behind them...thankfully for us, ABBA didn't. :--)
Just further evidence for me of how great ABBA were.
Excellent quality video here Shay! It shows how great Frida did with her great vocals in a live performance! Hadn't seen this particualr performance and it is really

These girls were very good. But they were the essence of the act. It was laughably boiled down by Jay Leno on NBC a few months ago when he said,
"I hear ABBA is not going to do a reunion tour because the guys in ABBA don't want to.
"I hadn't been aware that there were any guys in ABBA."
Good foreign pop group, one of a kind, but shouldn't be in rock 'n roll hall of fame.
